The chamber shudders hard enough to spit dust from the ceiling. Sisyphus bolts for a narrow seam in the wall, half-hidden behind a cracked pillar, as the last shadow strands above his throne fray and drift loose.
Hades plants his feet in the rubble, and the room seems to hold its breath around him. Thanatos moves at once, cutting across the king’s path, pale and relentless despite the chains he still bears.
Ares drives forward through broken stone, closing the gap before Sisyphus can vanish into the passage. The floor splits under the fleeing king’s heel, forcing him to stumble.

Sisyphus
No. This is mine. Corinth is mine.

Thanatos
Not anymore. Your hold is breaking.
Sisyphus whips toward the nearest opening, desperate now, while Hades’ presence steadies the failing shadows long enough for the others to press the advantage. The prison is coming apart, and so is his grip on the mortal realm.

Capture Sisyphus
“Can Hades use his power to seal the exit before Sisyphus escapes?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 37)

Ares
The shadows are not just fading. They are responding to him.

Hades
He thinks the dark is his to command, but he forgets who truly rules the depths.
Hades raises a hand, and the loose, drifting strands of shadow suddenly snap toward the wall seam, weaving themselves into a dense, impenetrable barrier of solid gloom that seals the exit shut.
“I leave Thanatos, who was badly weakened earlier, with Hades to rest, while Valintal and I close in on Sisyphus.”
SUCCESS (Great Athletics, rolled +2)

Ares peels away from Hades’ side, putting the shadow wall at his back and the wounded god of death in the safer half of the ruined chamber.

Hades
Rest. I have the king.
Thanatos leans into Hades’ space, still unsteady, while Ares and Valintal move together across the fractured floor toward the far end of the hall.

Thanatos
Do not let him slip deeper. The palace is still listening.
The shadows along the walls twitch and thin as they retreat from Hades’ command, leaving the chamber dimmer and more honest than before.

Sisyphus
You think a locked door makes a prison?
“I block his route and strike first”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Combat, rolled +0)

Ares cuts across the broken floor and closes the gap before Sisyphus can reach the seam.
His first blow lands hard, driving the king off-line and stealing the escape angle in one sharp motion.

Sisyphus
No, wait.
Sisyphus staggers back, his balance broken, the hidden wall behind him sealed and useless.

Hades
There is nowhere left for you to run.

Thanatos
The palace is failing around us. Choose badly, and it will choose for you.
Dust rains through the dim chamber as the shadows thin further, and Sisyphus is left boxed in, breathing fast, forced to decide whether to surrender or gamble on a desperate move.
“Has Sisyphus given up his escape?”
NO (Unlikely, rolled 74)
Sisyphus sneers, his eyes darting toward a loose stone in the floor as he refuses to yield. He remains defiant, his posture coiled and ready to bolt at the slightest lapse in the gods' attention.
“Is Sisyphus about to try an escape?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 18)

Sisyphus lunges with sudden, desperate speed, his fingers hooking into a hidden floor lever that triggers a concealed trapdoor beneath his feet.

Ares
He is making a break for the lower tunnels.

Sisyphus
You may have the gods, but you will never hold the king of Corinth.
“Valintal and I seize Sisyphus before he drops away”
FAILURE (Legendary Strength, rolled -4)

Ares and Valintal slam down on the opening as Sisyphus slips, but the king twists out of reach. The rim of the trapdoor bites into Ares's forearm, and Sisyphus drops deeper into the chute with a ragged laugh.

Ares
Too late.

Sisyphus
Your hands are too slow for my kingdom.
Thanatos reaches for the edge, but the broken floor gives way in a shriek of wood and dust. The opening widens, and the downward passage swallows Sisyphus to the waist.

Hades
He falls where he can still be reached. Do not let him vanish below.
Ares hauls at Sisyphus's cloak, but the cloth tears in his grip. The king tears free, kicking loose into the darkness as the palace shudders around them.
The trap has changed the chase into a hole in the world, one the others cannot simply run through. From below, Sisyphus's voice echoes up, thin and fleeing, while the shadows peel back from the walls.
“Are Hades and/or Thanatos able to assist?”
YES (Likely, rolled 40)

Hades
Ares, look. The shadows he uses to slip away are not his own. They are tethered to the very foundations of this palace, and I can sever that connection.

Thanatos
He relies on the architecture of his own deceit. If we strike the keystone of this chamber, the path he uses will collapse into a dead end.

Ares
The shadows are thinning. If they can force the structure to shift, he will have nowhere left to run.
“Valintal and I distract Sisyphus while Hades and Thanatos sever his connection to the shadows, leaving him with no escape route.”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Combat, rolled -2)

Ares drives in hard, and Sisyphus turns toward him just long enough to lose the hidden seam beneath his feet.
Valintal crashes in from the side, forcing the king backward as Hades and Thanatos lift their hands toward the black thread in the stone.

Sisyphus
No. Stay back.
The shadow tether snaps with a sound like a torn banner. The wall seam goes slack, and the palace dark around it thins at once.

Thanatos
It is done. He has no path left.
Sisyphus skids to one knee at the rim of the opening, one hand clawing at the floor, his escape gone as dust pours deeper into the chute.
Ares's shove wins the instant, but the impact jars loose a stone brace overhead, and a jagged slab crashes down between them, spraying grit across the chamber.
“I shove the slab and block his escape”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Ares plants both hands on the slab and heaves. Stone grinds over stone, scraping sideways to seal the chute mouth.
The slab catches hard against the broken edge, then settles with a final jolt, leaving only a narrow gap for dust to sift through.

Sisyphus
You think that stops me?
Valintal surges up to the new barrier, sword lifted, while the king’s hand vanishes deeper below the rim.

Thanatos
He cannot pass upward now.

Hades
Then we hold this chamber and take him when he shows himself.
Below the stone, something shifts in the dark, and the loose shadows keep moving without a master as the dust keeps falling.
“Is the collapse forcing him deeper below?”
YES (Likely, rolled 41)

Ares peers through the narrow gap in the stone slab, his eyes adjusting to the gloom below. The floor of the chute is not a dead end, but a steep, crumbling incline that leads further into the dark, unstable bowels of the palace.

Ares
The foundation is giving way, and he is sliding down into the deep dark.
“I pin Sisyphus before he slips deeper”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Ares drops low and drives Sisyphus flat against the chute floor. Dust bursts up around the king as the stone grinds under his shoulder blades.

Sisyphus
Stilling me will not save you from the palace below.
The king’s heels skid against the slope, but there is no room left to gather speed. Above them, the slab quivers in its seam while pebbles patter into the darkness.

Hades
The opening holds. If Sisyphus slips now, he falls into our grasp, not deeper into his own maze.
Thanatos stays near the broken edge, pale and watchful, while Hades’s shadow-barrier stains the wall seam black. The moving shadows thin and scatter, losing their grip on the stone.

Sisyphus
Do you think a pin on a corpse of a room makes me conquered?
Sisyphus twists once, but Ares’ weight keeps him planted at the lip of the chute. Below them, the dark incline waits, silent and unstable.
““The palace below? Uncle, what is he talking about?””
FAILURE (Poor Reasoning, rolled -2)

Ares
The palace below? Uncle, what is he talking about?

Hades
The foundations remember every chamber built above them. Sisyphus has tied his shortcuts into the bones of this place.

Thanatos
He means the lower maze. He made it to hide what should have remained sealed, and to keep running when hunted.
Hades’s shadow-barrier loosens at the seam, not broken, only thinning as if the palace itself is growing tired of obeying it.

Hades
He is still trapped, Ares. But below us is not empty stone. It is a route, and routes can become prisons if the walls decide to close.

Sisyphus
Listen to him. Even now, he speaks of the house like it belongs to him.
Sisyphus strains once, then stills under Ares’s weight, eyes cutting toward the dark opening as loose grit trickles past his cheek.
““Enough of this farce.” I snarl, handing Sisyphus over to Hades and Thanatos.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +1)

Ares lifts Sisyphus off the broken lip and turns him out of the choke point. The king’s boots scrape stone as the god of war gives him over to the waiting hands beside the chute.

Sisyphus
Careful. Even now, you all crowd the edge of my house.
Thanatos steps in first, pale fingers locking around Sisyphus’s arm, while Hades closes in on the other side. The shadow at the seam keeps thinning, but it no longer offers escape.

Hades
He is ours now.

Thanatos
He is still trying to read the dark for a way out.
Ares releases his hold. Sisyphus is pinned between underworld judgment and a dead end of crumbling stone, with the chute yawning below him and no route left open.
