The palace ceiling groans again, and the beam Valintal chose to meet is already falling. He plants his boots in the grit and throws his whole weight against the ruin, buying the others a heartbeat more.

Valintal

Valintal

Go. I have my battle.

Ares sees the old warrior’s hands shake, not from fear, but from relief. The disease that has hunted him to the end is still there, yet for once it means nothing.

Thanatos

Thanatos

At last, he comes to rest.

Thanatos steps closer, solemn as a priest at a pyre, and lays a guiding hand near Valintal’s shoulder. Sisyphus is dragged lower into the collapsing shaft, snarling and helpless in Thanatos’s grip.

Valintal gives one final shove. The beam slips free, the pressure breaks, and he staggers as if the world has let him go at last.

He falls to one knee, head bowed, while the ruin settles around him. The end he chased does not look like defeat. It looks like peace.

“You fought well, Valintal. Elysium awaits.” I tell Valintal, giving him a salute of respect as Thanatos grants him the death he wanted. Then I collect Valintal’s body and follow Hades and Thanatos out, so that Valintal can receive a hero’s funeral as soon as we escape.

Ares answers the silence with a warrior’s salute, the gesture sharp against the settling dust. He gathers Valintal’s body with both arms and lifts him clear of the grit.

Ares

Ares

You fought well, Valintal. Elysium awaits.

Thanatos watches without flinching, and the pale light around him softens as Valintal’s struggle finally leaves him. Sisyphus, still in Thanatos’s grip, goes slack for one precious instant.

Thanatos

Thanatos

He hears you.

Hades steps in close, one hand steady at Ares’s shoulder, his gaze on the fallen warrior with grave approval. The shadows along the chamber wall pull back from the threshold, restless but no longer ruling it.

Hades

Hades

Take him with care.

Ares turns for the exit with Valintal cradled against him. Behind, the ruined palace sifts stone and ash, but the way out remains open, and the gods move with him.

Has Valintal reached Elysium?

As Ares steps into the threshold, the heavy, oppressive air of the palace suddenly gives way to a gentle, golden warmth that defies the gloom of the Underworld.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Look, Ares. The gates of Elysium have opened to receive him. His sacrifice was not in vain.

Ares

Ares

The path is clear. He has found the peace he sought.

Ares leaves Corinth behind and arrives at funerary temple.

We split up for now. Thanatos guides Valintal’s shade toward Elysium, Hades takes Sisyphus to the Underworld for judgment, and I take Valintal’s body to the nearest funerary temple to give him a hero’s funeral.

The funerary temple greets him in hush and incense, its stone cool beneath the last wash of golden light. Ares lays Valintal down before the altar, careful as a priest, while the shade lingers in the warmth between worlds.

Thanatos

Thanatos

I will guide his shade to Elysium. He earned that peace.

Hades

Hades

And I will take Sisyphus below for judgment. The balance will be mended.

Sisyphus stands bound between them, silent and rigid, as if even now he resents the mercy of being carried alive.

Thanatos lifts a hand toward Valintal's fading outline, and the light gathers around it like dawn over water.

Hades turns his dark gaze to Ares, grave but approving, while the shadows along the temple floor slide back from the altar stones.

Thanatos

Thanatos

You have given him the ending he asked for. That is no small thing.

The shade begins to drift toward Thanatos, and the living body rests in stillness at Ares's feet, awaiting the last rites of the temple.

I give Valintal the last rites

Ares sets Valintal’s hands in the old funeral pose and speaks the last rites over him. His voice is low, steady, and the temple answers with a soft toll from somewhere deep in the stone.

The words take. Valintal’s shade brightens once, like a lamp shielded from wind, and the body at the altar loosens into stillness.

Thanatos

Thanatos

It is done. He passes cleanly.

Thanatos lowers his hand. The drifting light turns toward Elysium, and a thin line of shadow on the floor curls back from the altar as if bowing.

Hades

Hades

You honored him well, nephew. Few mortals earn that much care, fewer gods offer it.

Sisyphus is pulled a half-step forward with Thanatos’s restraint, his jaw tight, his silence sour against the temple hush.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Valintal died as he wished, with purpose. If you wish, Ares, stay a breath longer and let the dead depart in peace.
