The maintenance room is a shallow pocket of dust, old pipes, and dead tools. Far off, the facility hums like a tired machine. For a moment, no one is running.

Rachel
Hold still, Ben. This joint looks scraped, not broken.
Rachel braces Ben’s arm on her lap and inspects the casing with careful fingers. Her shoulders are still tight, but her voice has gone soft.

Cid
We cut it too close. One more second in that alcove, and we would have lost the trail.

Martha
We made it here. That counts for something.
Martha leans against the wall beside Cid, dust on her cheek, trying to breathe like the room is safe enough to trust. Her hand finds his sleeve and stays there.

Cid
Yeah. For now, we did.
Rachel gives Ben’s arm one last check, then taps the casing lightly. The room settles around them, waiting for the next choice.
“Is Amy in there too”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 60)

Ben
Amy is sitting in the corner behind the tool rack, her knees pulled to her chest.

Amy
I am okay. I just needed a second to stop shaking.
{"action":"Wirelessly connect To JC Jenson to to get information on how far we are from the evacuation site
(how many more miles) and ETA until the planet's core collapses","outcome":"success","trait":"Reasoning","traitLevel":"Fair","roll":2,"register":"advance","sceneTitle":"The Countdown to Evacuation","location":"Small dusty maintenance room off a cracked freeway service tunnel exit alcove"}

Ben flicks a signal through the dead kiosk network. The screen in the room stutters, then spits out a JC Jenson route map with a blinking evac mark and a countdown stamp.
A thin audio chime cuts through the dust, and a scraped-together corporate voice announces the launch line is 18.4 miles away, with only 2 hours, 17 minutes until core-collapse forecasts trigger full terminal loss.

Ben
Eighteen point four miles. The line is real, and it is farther than it looked.
The map widens for a second, showing a service spur that cuts off nearly four miles of the road distance if Ben can keep the route clear.

Rachel
Then we do not waste time. Can you get us the fastest path?

Cid
If that clock is right, we move now. Ben, tell us where to go.
The terminal keeps pulsing, waiting for a destination choice.
“I estimate it will take 4 hours by foot to make it to our destination. If we keep moving by foot we will not make it on time. We will need to get to the surface and find the vehicle. Even though it's dark out and the murder drones will be out patrolling, we don't have time we will just have to outdrive them”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +0)

Ben lowers their hand from the kiosk and points toward the ceiling hatch. The route decision snaps into place, and the little room feels smaller for it.

Ben
By foot, we miss the line. We need the vehicle, and we need surface access.

Cid
Then we move. Fast.

Rachel
The surface exit is the only way I know to the lot. If the car still runs, we have a shot.

Martha
I will take whatever is useful. Keys, water, anything light enough to carry.
Cid grabs the kiosk map and turns for the maintenance door. Dust shivers off the frame as the room wakes up with sudden motion.
The hatch handle rattles under Ben’s grip, and the tunnel air leaks in, colder and darker than the room.
“"I will go looking for a vehicle all of you stay here until I get back. I can't look for vehicles and keep you safe at the same time. If I'm not back within 15 minutes, go looking without me." If the Martins want to say anything before he goes it would be nice.”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled -1)

Ben
I’m going to check for a vehicle. Stay here. If I’m not back in fifteen minutes, go without me.

Cid
Understood. Find anything with four wheels and enough fuel to move.

Rachel
And be careful with your arm, Ben. Don’t make me patch it again.

Martha
Take the map. If you see an open lot, use the south side, the light there is better.

Amy
I’ll keep them on the route. If the kiosk flickers again, I’ll memorize what it says.
Ben slips out through the maintenance door into the cold service alcove, dust scraping across their hood as the room seals behind them.
Outside, cracked concrete drops away to a slanted shoulder of dead cars and broken barriers. Half-buried in grit, a battered utility van sits nose-out, one side panel hanging open, keys still dangling in the ignition.
Ben reaches it first. The van is ugly, dented, and running on fumes, but the engine turns over with a rough cough when they touch the starter.

“Does it have enough gas to get us to our location”
YES (Even, rolled 33)

Ben
The fuel gauge is low, but the needle is steady. It is enough to reach the evacuation line.
Ben watches the gauge flicker to life, confirming the tank holds just enough to cover the remaining distance.
“Ben will run back for the family and let them know he found a vehicle you will then keep an eye out for murder drones in the air with shotgun raised just in case, while getting them to the van”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +0)

Ben shuts off the van and slips back to the tunnel mouth, shotgun up. The Martins are still there, lit by the weak spill from the maintenance room.
He gives them the quick signal. A vehicle waits on the service road, ready to move.

Cid
Good. Then we do not waste another second.

Martha
Ben, you lead. We follow your route.
Rachel gathers her bag against her chest, eyes flicking upward to the open dark above the road.

Rachel
I do not like how quiet it is out there.
Ben keeps the shotgun raised while guiding them toward the van, all of them moving as one tight rush to the curb.
Far overhead, a thin mechanical whine cuts through the night, and every head snaps toward it.
“"EVERYONE MOVE!" Ben will take some shotgun shots to try to distract the murder drone while backing up to the van.”
SUCCESS (Fair Marksmanship, rolled +2)

Ben fires a short burst over the roofline, the cracks echoing down the service road. The whine above jerks hard to one side, chasing the noise instead of the family.
Cid lunges from the curb to the van first, one hand already on the sliding door. Martha hurries after him, bag bouncing against her hip.
Rachel hustles in close behind Ben, head ducked, eyes still up on the dark.

Ben
The sound is close. It is buying seconds, not minutes.

Cid
Door's open. Move, move.

Martha
Ben, get in, now.
The van rocks as everyone piles inside, and the engine note climbs from a tired rumble to a fighting growl. Above them, the whine passes over the road and fades away to the rear.
