Ben steers the Martins’ car along the cracked freeway, the windshield scarred by dust and old impacts. Ahead, the road bends toward a distant evacuation route, but the horizon is already going copper with evening.

Cid leans forward from the passenger seat, scanning the dead lanes and collapsed signs. Martha twists in her seat, one hand braced on the dash, eyes searching for any shelter before night falls.

In the back, Amy and Rachel trade a quick, whispered game of I spy, trying to keep the fear out of the car. Their voices are small, but they keep filling the silence like a signal trying not to die.

Cid

Left shoulder in half a mile. If there is an overpass with any underpass cover, take it.

Martha

Martha

And keep an eye on the sky. Once the sun drops, we do not want to be stuck out here.

Ben

The fuel gauge is lower than Ben wants it to be.

Ben eases the car past a broken lane divider as the last light slants across the road. The freeway ahead is empty, too empty, and the shadow under the overpass looks like the only scrap of safety for miles.

Rachel

Rachel

I spy something big and dark on the road ahead... and it is moving.

Reach the overpass cover

I slow down and scan the moving shape

SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +1)

Ben eases off the gas. The moving shape resolves in the fading light, a toppled road sign dragged by wind across the lanes.

Ahead, the overpass looms larger, its underside dark and dry. The shoulder beside it is cluttered with broken concrete and scrub.

Ben

Ben

The road is clear. The shape is just debris.

Cid

Cid

Good. Keep us moving, Ben. I want under that cover before the light goes.

Martha

There, the shadow under the bridge. That will do if nothing else does.

Rachel sits back from the window, still staring ahead, while Amy’s head turns toward the shoulder, checking the edge of the bridge for anything waiting there.

Is anything hiding under the bridge?

YES (Likely, rolled 40)

As the car rolls into the bridge's shadow, the headlights sweep across the concrete pillars. A pair of glowing, yellow eyes blink from the darkness behind a rusted support beam.

Ben

Ben

Movement detected. Something is waiting in the blind spot.

This could be the eyes of a worker drone but are those the eyes of a murder drone?

YES (Likely, rolled 51)

The yellow glow intensifies, shifting from a steady gaze to a predatory flicker as a metallic, bladed wing unfurls from the shadows. It is not a worker drone, but a Murder Drone, its nanite-infused limbs twitching with a lethal, mechanical hunger.

Ben

Ben

Confirmed. That is a Murder Drone.

Is there an exit nearby with a suburban area?

YES (Likely, rolled 63)

My internal mapping sensors are pinging a secondary maintenance tunnel just beyond the pillar, leading directly into the old residential district.

A faint, flickering light from a streetlamp reveals a rusted service gate tucked behind the concrete support, offering a narrow path away from the main road and toward the quiet, overgrown suburbs.
