The trench shudders under distant impacts. Sgt. Douglas hunches over the field radio, fingers working the dial in a hurry. Justin Forester stares up at the rim of the trench, pale and shaking.
A drone buzz drops lower, searching for movement. Daniel North stays low beside the wall, heavy machine gun braced in the mud, watching the sky lane between blasts.

Sgt. Douglas
Come on, come on... give me command, damn it.
The radio gives a hiss, then a burst of clipped static. Douglas jerks the handset closer, locking onto the signal for a heartbeat.

Justin Forester
If that holds, we might get coordinates or orders. If it doesn’t, this trench is just a waiting grave.
Above them, one drone breaks from the swarm and dives toward the trench mouth. Douglas looks up just as Daniel North has a clean angle on it.
If Daniel fires now, he can cover the radio long enough for Douglas to get the net up and keep the squad in the fight.

Get the radio connected to command
“Can Daniel talk Justin into handling radio duties while Sgt. Douglas and I cover him?”
NO (Likely, rolled 73)
Justin flinches away from the radio as if it were a live grenade, his hands shaking too violently to even touch the dials. He shakes his head, eyes wide with terror, and refuses to take the handset from the sergeant.
“"Technical things ain't my forte, kid." Daniel shouts as he guns down a few robot dogs that paradropped down nearby.”
SUCCESS (Great Firearms, rolled +0)

Daniel swings the heavy gun toward the trench lip and opens up. The first robot dog tumbles out of the air, sparks snapping from its shattered frame.
A second lands hard, skids through dirt, and jerks apart under the burst. The radio crackles once, loud and thin, cutting through the drone whine.

Daniel North
Technical things ain't my forte, kid.
Daniel keeps firing as the last of the pair drops limp beside the trench wall. Mud and smoke spit across Justin's face, and he ducks lower with the handset half-raised.

Sgt. Douglas
Keep them off us! I'm getting command!
Above them, the incoming swarm splits. One drone peels away from the circling mass and dives straight for the radio's crackling signal.
Justin stares up from behind the mud wall, frozen. The handset hisses in Sgt. Douglas's grip as the trench fills with the scream of engines.
undefined / undefined

The diving machine is not alone. Its underside opens as it drops, and a second shape slips free from its shadow, a small charge with fins that hunts straight for the handset in Sgt. Douglas’s grip.

Sgt. Douglas
North, cover that radio now! They are homing on the signal!
Justin jerks back from the wall, eyes wide, and the handset cable goes taut as Douglas hauls the radio closer to the mud. The swarm above tightens, circling like it has found the prize.

Daniel North
They are targeting the radio.
“A long spray of machingun fire attempts to clear the sky as Daniel shouts at Justin "Focus kid!"”
SUCCESS (Great Firearms, rolled +1)

Daniel North snaps the heavy machine gun up and hoses the sky with a brutal line of fire. The diving drone shreds in the burst, and the finned charge tumbles away from Sgt. Douglas’s radio hand, smoking into the mud.

Daniel North
Focus, kid!
The shot buys a heartbeat. Sgt. Douglas drops flat over the handset, then reaches for the radio casing with both hands, trying to keep the signal alive.

Justin Forester
Keep it together. Just keep it together.
Justin flinches at the overhead scream, but he stays in the trench and looks toward Daniel instead of the sky.

Sgt. Douglas
I need this line open, North. Hold them off one more second!
Above them, the swarm loosens for the first time, the tight circle broken by the burst and the falling charge.
“Can Daniel get through Justin's paralysis with some shouts and a light kick? Tech really is his thing!”
YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 65)
Daniel North kicks the dirt near Justin's boots, the sharp impact vibrating through the trench floor. Justin jolts, his eyes snapping from the sky to meet Daniel's gaze, but the terror remains locked behind his pupils.

Justin Forester
I hear you, North. I am trying, but the wires are fried and the signal is just static. I am not a soldier, I cannot fix this while they are hunting us.
“A couple quick MG bursts down a few more drones, it looks like they are thinning out...”
SUCCESS (Great Firearms, rolled +2)

Daniel North hammers two short bursts into the loose swarm. One drone snaps apart in the air, then another tumbles smoking into the mud.
The surviving machines break wide, climbing out of the trench line. For one hard second, the sky above the squad clears.

Sgt. Douglas
That buys us a window, North, keep it open!

Justin Forester
He actually got them off us for a moment.
Douglas drags the radio handset closer in both hands, half shielded by his body, while the abandoned field radio smolders in the mud beside him.

Sgt. Douglas
I need clear air on that set. Cover me while I try again.
Above them, the swarm starts to tighten back into a hunting shape, angling for another dive.
“As Justin starts patching the radio with multitool and electrical tape, Daniel keeps gunning down drones and robot dogs.”
SUCCESS (Great Firearms, rolled +1)

Daniel North rakes the sky again, and a diving shape breaks apart before it reaches the trench. Justin’s hands shake, but the multitool is open now, tape bitten off and ready.

Justin Forester
If I can bridge the wire, maybe it comes back.
Douglas jams the handset against the dead field radio and leans in, listening for life in the static while smoke curls from the casing.

Sgt. Douglas
Forester, keep your hands moving. North, I need that sky cold.
Justin crouches lower and starts wrapping tape around a frayed lead, eyes fixed on the cracked body of the set.

Daniel North
The next pass will be lower.
Daniel answers with another burst. A robot dog staggers in from the mud line, gets cut down mid-lunge, and rolls still beside the trench lip.
At the same moment, a sharp crack jumps through the handset. Douglas freezes, then snaps his head toward the radio as a faint voice fights through the hiss, demanding identification.
“As Sgt. Douglas and Jistin continue work on the radio, Daniel continues gunning down drones with the last of the belt of ammo in his weapon...”
SUCCESS (Great Firearms, rolled -1)

Daniel swings the gun back up and hammers the sky again. A diving drone bursts apart in the glare, and the remaining belt runs dry in the same breath.

Sgt. Douglas
That’s it, North. Stay on them if you can.
Douglas jerks the handset to his ear. The crackle sharpens, then a voice cuts through clear enough to matter.

Unknown Voice
Identify your station. Repeat, identify your station.

Justin Forester
It’s live. It’s actually live.
Justin freezes over the smoking field radio, then leans in with both hands, listening like he’s afraid to breathe. Above them, the swarm shifts wider instead of diving.

Sgt. Douglas
North, cover us while I answer. Forester, keep that set together.
