The hum grows louder through the brush. Ahead, a wrecked courier truck sits half across the lane, and beside it a signal mast lies snapped open, its cable ends neatly cut.

Sgt. Douglas lowers his chin toward the broken mast and points Daniel onward. Behind the static, a faint burst of radio carries through, the same trap-laden cadence as before, then silence.

Daniel inches to the lane mouth and catches movement in the haze, a tracked shape nosing out from the shadows. The squad sees the truth at once, the route ahead is the enemy's hook, and the only way to save the mission is to break the ambush before it closes.
