Bobby rolls into the warehouse district and the fog thins around his windshield. Sodium lights bleach the concrete in weak gold, and the air tastes like fuel, hot rubber, and damp metal.

Ahead, the starting grid waits in neat rows. Tuned coupes, sleepers, and glossy imports idle shoulder to shoulder, their headlights cutting pale bars through the haze.

Jax

Jax

There you are. Slide into the open spot, Bobby. We’re set.

Jax stands near the line, one hand lifted in a quick signal. At the front, the tinted hypercar sits silent and low, windows black as spilled oil.

We start on the marshal’s mark. No drifting off the line.

Bobby eases his car into formation. Around him, engines pulse in a restless chorus, then settle into a tense, waiting rumble.

'A hypercar? How will a car like this have a chance? Like a middleschooler vs a heavy weight champion boxer,' he worries. He tries to refocus. 'Just focus on even making it to the finish line in a decent time.'

The lane falls almost quiet except for engines ticking hot. Bobby’s own car settles in place, and the car beside him rocks once on its suspension as its driver blips the throttle.

Bobby

Bobby

A hypercar is a problem. Just make it to the finish in one piece.

Jax

Jax

Good. Stay loose, Bobby. Watch the front, not the rumors.

At the head of the grid, the marshal steps forward and lifts a hand. The hypercar’s brake lights flare red through the fog, then dim again.

No hero moves. Wait for the mark.

A pit crew member in a reflective vest hustles across the far lane and snaps a cable away from the curb, clearing the last obstacle from the run.

Then the marshal points straight ahead. The first revs rise all at once, sharp and hungry, and Bobby feels the whole grid tense against the line.

'Okay, okay, don't jump the start,' Bobby reminds himself.

Bobby eases into the hush before launch, keeping the engine from barking too hard. The whole grid seems to hold its breath with him.

Bobby

Slow hands. Clean start.

Jax’s ears flick toward Bobby’s car, then back to the line, like he is checking the timing by instinct.

Jax

Jax

That’s it, Bobby. Smooth pedal, no panic.

The marshal snaps his arm down. Tires bite the pavement, and Bobby launches exactly with the pack, not a fraction early.

Measured. Good.

For one bright second, Bobby even gains a clean inch off the line, the small advantage tucked neatly into the rush.

The staging lane explodes into motion, the hypercar surging beside him as the race opens up into the warehouse streets.

Bobby might not be able to beat the hypercar here, but if he can get even a little bit of draft, he'll be able to go full throttle and gain an edge over everyone else at least

Bobby tucks in behind the hypercar’s wake, the air smoothing out around his hood as if the street opens for him. The engine stays hard, but steadier now.

The draft catches. Bobby leans into it and the car answers, surging with a cleaner pull down the lane.

Jax

Jax

There it is. Use it!

The hypercar’s rear end fills Bobby’s view, close enough to read its reflections. He slips into the pocket behind it, shielded from the worst of the wind.

Bobby

Bobby

This is the good air.

The gap behind the leader starts pulling the whole pack into Bobby’s hands, and his car feels suddenly lighter, faster, more ready to pounce.

The Driver in the Hypercar

The Driver in the Hypercar

Clever.

From the draft, Bobby gets a small extra edge, a hidden pocket of speed that carries him past the first stretch with room to spare.

The hypercar pulls away, unsurprisingly. Now, Bobby needs to carry the momentum he's gained in the draft. No doubt there are other cars more powerful than his, perhaps significantly so. Not multiple tiers and hundreds of HP more, he hopes.

Bobby keeps the car planted in the pocket of speed, holding the draft just long enough to milk it dry. The nose stays calm as the lane starts to bend and the slipstream thins.

He eases out of the wake at exactly the right moment, and the car still carries the surge. The hypercar drifts a touch wider ahead, buying Bobby a cleaner line through the turn.

Nice. You saw that opening.

Jax punches a fist into the air from the sideline, then points down the street like he can push Bobby onward with the gesture alone.

Jax

Jax

Keep it pinned, Bobby! You got room now!

The lane ahead clears faster than expected, and Bobby’s speed holds through the bend.

The hypercar’s lead is still there, but Bobby has the faster rhythm now, carrying momentum the draft gave him and turning it into clean distance on the exit.

"Of course, the weight of the hypercar will balance us out in the turns! Maximum draft, and perfect turns. Then maybe, just maybe..."

Bobby rides the cleaner air behind the hypercar, the nose of his car tucked so close it feels glued to the wake. The lane ahead opens between stacked warehouses, and his line stays razor straight.

At the next bend, he uses the extra pull to swing wide, then cuts back in with a smooth snap that keeps the speed alive. The hypercar loses a sliver of its advantage.

That was perfect. You’re reading the road fast.

Jax laughs loud enough to hear over the engines, both hands raised now like Bobby can catch the sound and carry it forward.

Jax

Jax

That’s it, Bobby. Stay on it!

The finish setup comes into view, painted markers and a marshal’s van flashing past the edges of the street. Bobby’s car surges out of the turn with the best exit speed on the road.

He slips ahead cleanly, the hypercar forced to chase his taillights as the crowd noise swells from the warehouse line.

A final banner whips overhead, and the gap holds. Bobby has the race.
