Morning light spills into the motel lobby, pale and dusty through the blinds. Bobby steps in from the lot, his racing gear still carrying the bite of burnt rubber and cold street air.
The Motel Clerk looks up from behind the front desk as Bobby sets the money down. The bills land flat beside a stack of forms and a stubby pen.
Bobby
Here. That covers what I owe.
The clerk counts it twice, then again, his ears twitching with surprise at the full amount. His guarded look loosens by a degree.
Bobby
And, for what it is worth, I am not trying to make your job harder. I just want to stay square with you.
The Motel Clerk
Hmph. You are at least better than the usual late-payers. Quiet, too, when you want to be.
He slides the receipt across the counter, then pauses, studying Bobby with fresh, reluctant curiosity. Outside, a delivery truck rumbles past the curb and fades down the street.
