Rootlight runs in a thin line through Green the Colossus's hands, hot and alive. Above her, dust sifts from the cracked ceiling. The drain chamber groans, each support taking the strain a little worse than before.

Purple

Purple

Green, now. We do not get a second chance.

Orange

Orange

I am right behind you. Move, and I cover you.

Yellow

Yellow

Rear is mine. Keep going!

Red the Colossus

Red the Colossus

The floor is dying under us. Good. We leave it behind.

Blue braces the broken edge with both hands, holding the widening split long enough for the others to reach it. The pale creature lowers its body into the fissure, intent on protecting the living thread as the chamber shudders around them.

The Earth

The Earth

Carry what remains. Do not let it die here.

The passage ahead opens into dim wasteland light, wind already pushing dust through the gap. Green stands at the threshold with the Earth's force anchored to her, and the next move belongs to her alone.

I lead us out into the wasteland

Green surges forward, but the threshold answers with a blast of grit. Wind knifes through the opening, shoving dust back into the chamber and slamming loose debris against her path.

The pale creature shifts deeper in the fissure, its body tightening around the rootline as if to keep it from tearing free. The living thread tugs hard through Green’s hands.

Purple

Purple

Hold there. The opening is choked.

Blue strains harder against the cracked edge, but a slab near the exit slumps inward, narrowing the gap to a crawl. Orange catches Green from behind before the pull can drag her off balance.

Orange

Orange

I have you. Don’t lose the line.

Yellow snaps his head toward the noise outside, where the wasteland wind carries a distant clatter across the broken stone. The route is still open, but not yet passable.

Red the Colossus

Red the Colossus

We need one clean push, or we stay buried.

I shove the opening wider with Blue

FAILURE (Poor Strength, rolled -2)

Green drives her weight into the slab with Blue, and the broken edge answers by grinding sideways instead of yielding cleanly. Dust sheets off the concrete as the opening widens a handspan, then sticks again on jagged debris.

Blue keeps pushing, but the cracked lip slips under his force. The gap jerks lower, not wider, and the wind outside hammers grit straight back into their faces.

The rootline in Green’s hands snaps taut. The living thread pulls her forward while the slab drags down, turning the shove into a wrenching bind instead of a clean break.

Purple

Purple

Enough. Another push and it shears.

Orange shifts in behind Green, one arm already ready to catch her if the line jerks again. Yellow leans toward the opening, watching the slab settle into a worse angle.

Red the Colossus

Red the Colossus

Then we change the angle. Now.

The exit remains open, but only as a crooked, choking slit, with the rootlight pulsing under Green’s hands and the wind demanding a choice.

I let Blue brace while I hold steady

Green holds the rootline steady, and the pull settles into a firm, usable tension instead of a violent jerk. Blue plants his weight under the slab’s broken lip, using the opening Green has kept alive.

The crooked slit holds. Dust streams through, but the gap no longer drops under their hands. Orange stays close behind Green, ready, while Yellow watches the opening as if measuring whether the path can take them.

Purple

Purple

Hold it there. That is enough.

Purple steps back from the threshold and points through the gap. The exit is still ugly, but it is stable now, and the wind can only claw at the edge.

Green the Colossus

Green the Colossus

The line is steady now.

Red the Colossus

Red the Colossus

Then we move on your count.

Blue keeps the slab braced while the others bunch at the opening, waiting on Green’s hold to carry them through.

I move through the opening

Green slips through first, shoulders turned sideways, roots and dust scraping past her as she clears the crooked opening. The rootline comes with her, taut and alive, and the wind snatches at the length trailing behind.

On the other side, the passage tilts into open ruin, broken stone and old drag marks slanting away into the waste. Blue stays inside for one last shove, keeping the slab from settling early.

A sharp grind runs through the brace as Green’s weight shifts free of it. Dust bursts from the seam, and a few pebbles skitter down the slope at her boots.

Orange leans into the gap behind her, ready to follow, while Yellow checks the opening once more from the chamber side, measuring the exit with quick, wary eyes.

Red the Colossus

Red the Colossus

Move. We have the path now.

Purple holds position just inside the threshold, letting the others funnel through in order. The chamber behind them still sheds dust, but the passage ahead is open, narrow, and waiting.

I lead us deeper into the waste

The passage dead-ends in a shelf of buckled stone. The floor ahead has split away into a drop, and the rootline Green carries jerks tight before it can reach the far side.

A ribbon of dust pours down the gap, hissing over old drag marks that vanish into darkness. The way out is not open enough for a straight march.

Purple

Purple

Hold. That cut is too wide to cross as is.

Blue shifts at the rear, keeping the last of the opening from settling, while Orange catches the line before it snaps back against Green.

Red the Colossus

Red the Colossus

We need another route, or a bridge.

Ahead, the broken shelf slopes toward a narrow side crawl, half buried under grit. It is the only visible continuation, but it is barely bigger than a shoulder.

I use my vines to create a bridge

Green lowers her hands to the taut rootline, and the living threads answer at once. They spread from the line like roots seeking soil, then gather into a web across the gap.

The first strand bites into the far shelf, then another, and another, until a rough bridge hangs between the broken edges. Dust keeps spilling through it, but the span holds.

Green the Colossus

Green the Colossus

The bridge is set.

Orange

Orange

That will carry us. Carefully.

Orange shifts back, making room as Blue eases the slab behind them and Red leans in to judge the new crossing.

Purple

Purple

Good. Move while it is strong.

The narrow crawl beside the break waits in the gloom, but the woven vine bridge gives the group a way through at last.

I signal for the others to follow me across the span one by one.

Green lifts one hand from the vine span and gives a small, steady signal. The bridge sways under the dust, but it holds.

Purple

Purple

One at a time. Keep your weight centered.

Purple steps onto the living weave first, testing it with measured care. Orange stays close to Green’s side, ready to steady anyone who falters.

Blue follows, broad shoulders bent low to keep the line stable, while Red watches the crawl beside the break and the dark drop below.

The first crossing lands safely on the far shelf. The vine bridge flexes, then settles, carrying the next weight without breaking.

Orange

Orange

It holds. We move.

One by one, the group starts across the span, and the hidden oasis is left behind in the dust.

The Final Threshold

The vine bridge held, trembling under their weight as the wasteland wind breathed through the broken passage.

Green the Colossus

Green the Colossus

Keep moving. I have the thread.

Purple

Purple

Then we go together, and we do not look back.

Blue the Colossus

Blue the Colossus

Brace it. The opening is ours now.

Orange

Orange

Easy steps. We made it this far.

Red the Colossus

Red the Colossus

Forward. The wasteland can wait its turn.

Green carried the living thread out of the dying oasis, and the others followed into the harsh open ruin. Behind them, the chamber fell in on itself, sealing the last breath of the old refuge. Ahead lay sand, wind, and the hard promise of survival, held together for now by strain, trust, and the Earth's quiet command.
