The Merchant's Daughter draws a shuddering breath in the lantern glow, then lifts the ribbon from her chest with both hands. The wolves beyond the barred gate go still, their breathing low and wet against the wood.

The Merchant's Daughter
I am ready. Tell me how to hold it, Misty.
Misty steps closer, the grimoire open in her hands. The page’s warning about grief-feeders seems to pulse in the wavering light, as if the ink itself is listening.

Misty
The ribbon is the token. It needs to be shown, then named with the lost one.
The Merchant's Daughter nods hard, swallowing her fear. She raises the ribbon toward the gate, arms trembling but steadying by the second.

The Merchant's Daughter
Then I will say his name. Keep watch, please.
She turns toward the dark beyond the bars and begins to speak, and the courtyard tightens around the sound like a held breath.

Protect the Merchant's Daughter from the sorrow-spirit
“I keep watch on the gate”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

Misty shifts her weight and fixes her gaze on the gate. The lanterns tremble in their hooks, and the old wood answers with a low, animal creak.
A thin wash of cold slides over the courtyard stones. Misty catches it first, a spill of sadness with no body attached, threading through the cracks beneath the bars.
That feeling is not coming from the wolves.
Beyond the gate, one of the shapes at the edge of the dark uncoils, wrong and pale, drawn toward the merchant’s daughter’s voice.
Misty lifts the grimoire a little higher. The page turns by itself, and a line of gold fire briefly runs under the ribbon’s knot in the daughter’s hands.

The Merchant's Daughter
It heard me.
The sorrow-spirit falters at the threshold, as if the spoken name has caught in its throat. The cold slackens, and the gate’s bars stop shuddering.
For one clean breath, the courtyard feels sealed again. Then the dark beyond the gate stirs a second time, waiting for the next sound.
“*I call upon my uncles name and authority*”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Misty straightens the grimoire and lets the old authority in the air gather around her voice. The ribbon in the daughter’s hands glows once, brighter than lantern flame.

Misty
By my uncle’s name, and by his authority, you do not take her.
The words strike the gate like a seal. The sorrow-spirit recoils hard, its pale shape tearing backward from the bars as if an unseen hand drags it from the threshold.

The Merchant's Daughter
It worked...
The cold haze thins at once. A black thread slips free from the ribbon knot and evaporates in the lantern light, leaving the girl’s hands steady instead of shaking.
Outside the gate, the wolves go still. The spirit’s pressure is gone from the stones, and the courtyard feels suddenly wider, quieter, human.

The Merchant's Daughter
Thank you, Misty. It’s gone, isn’t it?
