Misty lands hard on a forgotten path, half-swallowed by fern and root. The forest canopy knits shut above her, turning the light green and thin.
Behind her, the sinkhole settles with a wet groan. Far off, the broken clearing exhales dust and drifting leaves.
The Sorrow-Spirit hovers at the edge of the path, its shape flickering between a child’s outline and a smear of mist.

Sorrow-Spirit
Do not leave me here... it will find the seam again.

Misty
The path is older than the forest around it.
Misty steadies herself, grimoire and pendant warm against her chest. Ahead, through the tangled brush, a narrow stone marker leans beside the track, its face scratched with a faint spiral.

“I ask the spirit what lies below”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +2)

Misty lets the question hang in the damp air. The spirit trembles, then drifts closer to the leaning marker, as if the scratch in its stone pulls at its memory.

Sorrow-Spirit
Below... a root chamber, and old hands. They bound grief there, then forgot the taste of it.

Sorrow-Spirit
I was made to guard the seam, not to cross it. Something beneath still remembers your blood.
The pendant at Misty's throat warms once, sharp as a heartbeat. In the spiral mark, a second groove appears under the moss, hidden until the spirit speaks.

Sorrow-Spirit
If she opens the way, I may finally stop fleeing the voices below.
The path falls quiet except for leaves brushing stone. The spirit watches Misty, brittle with fear, waiting for her to decide what she does with the name of the place beneath the earth.
“I open the chamber”
SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +1)

Misty brings the pendant down to the spiral groove and sets her grimoire flat beside the marker. The stone answers with a soft, inward click.
Roots loosen from the earth in a tight ring, and a seam of darkness opens under the moss. Cold air breathes out of the hidden chamber below.

Misty
The seal is keyed to the spiral, and to the blood-mark already in the stone.

Sorrow-Spirit
It opens. I did not expect that.
The spirit recoils, then steadies at the lip of the opening, staring into the dark below as if it recognizes the shape of its own fear.

Sorrow-Spirit
The voices are still there. They are quieter now.
From beneath the path, something shifts once, slow and patient, as if it has felt the door give way and is waiting for the answer that follows.
