After the dungeon-course trial, Ricayu returns to the tavern with Corven and Myaksei. Keith Blacke waits beneath the familiar window, his travel cloak folded beside him and two cups already poured.

Keith Blacke

Keith Blacke

I have been considering what comes next. My family’s name opens doors, but it also follows me through every one. I want a reputation earned by my own deeds.

Keith leans over the table and spreads a rough road map between the cups. His finger stops at a marked settlement where caravan roads meet beyond Puka.

Keith Blacke

Keith Blacke

There is a nearby trade hub called Darsen Cross. A merchant there seeks a small company to investigate a contract involving missing cargo, blocked routes, and a newly opened dungeon passage.

Keith Blacke

Keith Blacke

It could give us field experience without placing us beneath a noble banner. You bring archery, stealth, and dungeon knowledge. Myaksei brings healing and judgment. I can handle the front line.

Myaksei studies the map while Corven remains near the hearth, arms folded. His eyes move from the road to the tavern doors, weighing ambushes, divided loyalties, and the danger of exposing his restored name.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

A trade hub means information, coin, and people who profit from confusion. It may be worthwhile, but learn who owns that contract before you accept its risks.

Uncover who is responsible for the missing cargo and blocked routes

“A shield maiden at a nearby table, Aeva overhears us. She has been separated from her family and is seeking a group to work with. She introduces herself and asks if she can join us. I ask to allow us to speak as a group about her joining.”

Aeva rises from a nearby table, a young adult woman with fair skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes. Her northern shield and travel-worn clothes show long separation from home.

Aeva

Aeva

I am Aeva, a shieldmaiden of the north. I have been separated from my brothers, and I seek a group willing to work together. May I join you?

Ricayu

Ricayu

Let us speak as a group about whether Aeva should join us.

Ricayu’s request settles over the table, but the group does not begin a shared discussion. Aeva’s arrival has already made the question immediate and public.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

Not here, and not with my history exposed to every listening ear. We need a private place before we weigh another blade beside us.

Keith Blacke

Keith Blacke

The request is reasonable, but the tavern is too open. Aeva, tell us what work you can do, and we can meet privately at first light.

Aeva

Aeva

I can guard a line, carry a shield, and keep faith with those beside me. I will meet you at first light, if that is your chosen beginning.

““A strong shield, there may be some fights where a second frontline tank would benefit or to have Keith and Aeva alternate after a strong enemy’s big strikes. I also like that she was honest and straight forward.””

SUCCESS (Superb Oratory, rolled +0)

Ricayu

Ricayu

A strong shield would help us. Some fights may benefit from a second frontline fighter, letting Keith and Aeva alternate after a powerful enemy's heavy strikes. I also value that she was honest and direct.

Keith considers the road map, then glances toward the tavern doors where Aeva has departed. Myaksei folds his hands over the table, listening carefully.

Keith Blacke

Keith Blacke

That is sound reasoning. A second shield can preserve the line when one fighter needs to recover, and her honesty is a better beginning than polished promises.

Myaksei

Myaksei

I agree. Straight speech makes trust easier to test, while a shield gives the group time to heal, reposition, and survive a dangerous exchange.

Corven Vale

Then meet her privately at first light. Ask about her experience, her limits, and what she expects from companions. If those answers hold, she has earned a place at the table.

The group’s judgment settles in Aeva’s favor. Her shield, direct manner, and willingness to meet them openly now count as strengths rather than unanswered questions.

“I rest and dream. I dream in elven now and the forest and wood song make anything rooted to the earth and my new elven heritage grow. I embrace the warmth of the goddess and feel her blessing one of my skills. The four of us meet Aeva at first light.”

Sleep carries Ricayu into a silver-barked forest. He dreams entirely in Elven, and a wood song rises beneath his feet as roots, vines, and seedlings answer its rhythm.

Warmth gathers around his elven heritage like sunlight through leaves. The elven goddess’s presence rests upon him, and his archery sharpens within the dream, joining instinct to deliberate aim.

He wakes before dawn with the blessing secured, but his eyes burn and his head aches from the vision. The night’s poor rest leaves him short of sleep.

At first light, Ricayu meets Corven, Keith, and Myaksei outside the tavern. Mist lies across the road, and Aeva waits nearby with her shield strapped firmly to her arm.

Keith Blacke

Keith Blacke

Aeva, we have discussed your request. We value your directness and your shield. Tell us what you expect from companions when the road turns dangerous.

Aeva

Aeva

I expect courage without foolishness, truth without ornament, and no one abandoning another while a fighting chance remains. I offer the same in return.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

That is a sound beginning. We will travel together to Darsen Cross, learn the contract’s truth, and judge the danger as one company.

“Corven uses the adventure to train me further. The way I hold my bow, draw my arrows long look like elven archery, but his mastery still has so much to teach me. He continues to shape my skill and sets me to track a boar’s tracks we come across. It is still a day’s walk to the crossing and we need dinner. I have unhinged boar before and being in the wood, the earth, the forest fills me with the elven blessings that seek to continue taking hold of my destiny. I surrender to my elven path and track the boar to strengthen my archery under Corven’s tutelage.”

The company leaves the road for the wooded slope toward Darsen Cross. Corven watches Ricayu’s grip and draw, recognizing elven form while searching for habits still needing correction.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

Your bow already moves like an elf’s, brother, but elegance is not mastery. Keep the shoulder low, lengthen the breath, and let the draw finish without strain.

Fresh boar tracks press through damp leaves and soft earth. Ricayu lowers himself, reading broken stems, churned moss, and the direction of each deep hoofprint while the forest’s blessing settles through him.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

Track it for dinner. Do not follow the loudest sign. Find where the animal chose to move, then choose where your arrow will meet it.

Ricayu surrenders to the elven path without losing his own judgment. He leads the company through firs and fern, his footsteps quiet, the boar’s route unfolding beneath his sharpened perception.

At a narrow clearing, the boar emerges among roots. Ricayu settles into Corven’s corrected stance, draws smoothly, and releases. The arrow strikes cleanly, securing the evening meal.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

Well done. The forest guided your senses, but discipline guided the shot. Carry that lesson to Darsen Cross, and we will refine it again tomorrow.

“Corven trains me”

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +2)

Corven leads Ricayu away from the road into a quiet stand of firs, where damp ground records every footfall and branches conceal the training ground.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

Today we sharpen the whole discipline: endurance first, then bow, staff, and silent movement. Keep your judgment ahead of your instincts.

Ricayu climbs the wooded slope carrying his bow and pack, then crosses a muddy hollow without disturbing its wet leaves. His breathing remains controlled.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

Good. Now draw from the kneeling stance, release, and move before the sound settles. A skilled archer never becomes part of the target’s memory.

Ricayu looses three arrows into marked straw, then closes through the ferns with his blunted staff. His footwork turns roots and stones into part of the exercise.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

That is the form I wanted. The forest guides your balance, but you remain responsible for every step, every strike, and every arrow.

By dusk, Ricayu completes the full circuit without exposing the hidden shelter or leaving a clear trail. Corven gathers the targets, satisfied with the day’s work.

“We eat a great dinner and we get to know each other as companions. We chat, joke and share stories. A night by the fire, with a good meal after a day of training… in the woods that feel like home. I let myself sleep and I feel the goddess visit me again in my dream. She puts her hands on mine as I draw the bow, as I swing the stave and I realize she wants me to be her hands. She wants me to walk a path for her. I kneel before her and pledge myself. My hands feel as though she has blessed them and elven memory seems to bond within me letting me feel my staff and now through elven eyes.”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

A Contract Beyond Puka

After training, the company makes camp beneath the firs. A great dinner of roasted boar, bread, roots, and strong ale warms them beside the fire.

Keith Blacke

I once tried to impress my brothers by riding through a market gate. The gate won, the horse panicked, and three merchants still remember me.

Myaksei

That is why every company needs a priest, a shield, and someone willing to admit when the plan was foolish.

Laughter passes around the fire. Aeva shares northern stories, Corven offers dry corrections, and the companions eat until the woods feel less like wilderness than home.

Sleep carries Ricayu into the silver-barked forest. The elven goddess, an ageless elf goddess with a slender form, luminous silver eyes, long white hair, and flowing blue-green robes, stands before him, placing her hands over his as he draws the bow and swings the staff.

He understands her desire that he become her hands and walk her path. Ricayu kneels and pledges himself; warmth floods his fingers as elven memory bonds to staff, bow, and sight.

He wakes before dawn with the blessing secured, but his hands ache sharply and his sleep is shortened. The cost leaves his grip tender during the morning’s travel.

“We reach Darden Cross but we stay back. Corven and I prowl ahead and stealth to observe the cross first. We watch, listen and prepare before revealing ourselves. My elven senses seem stronger… I smell further, see sharper and hear even further than before.”

Darsen Cross appears beyond the firs, its crossroads crowded with wagons, timber buildings, and a squat watchtower. Ricayu and Corven remain concealed among the trees.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

Stay low, brother. We learn the shape of the place before the place learns ours.

They prowl along the wooded edge, using roots, ditches, and wagon ruts for cover. Ricayu’s sharpened sight separates sentries from travelers and cargo from clutter.

His hearing reaches through the settlement’s ordinary noise: cart wheels, hammering, tavern voices, and a guard discussing delayed wagons near the eastern storehouse.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

There. Two guarded warehouses, fresh wheel tracks, and more attention on the east road than the west. Remember every detail.

Ricayu follows the scents farther than before, distinguishing horse sweat, river mud, lamp oil, resin, and the sour trace of crowded stables. His senses map the crossroads quietly.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

We have seen enough to approach prepared. No names, no promises, and no revealing ourselves until we know who holds this contract.

“I nod silently and we watch while I let my elven senses expand and observe.”

The eastern storehouse has more guards, and the wind carries resin, lamp oil, and river mud.

Ricayu nods silently and lets his elven senses expand. Sight, hearing, and scent separate the crossroads into layers of movement, habit, and concealed purpose.

He identifies four watchmen, all adult human men in dark-green tabards over padded leather, with sturdy builds and visible faces; two carry spears and two wear hooded cloaks around the warehouses, two stationed openly and two shifting between shadowed doorways. Their patrols overlap near the eastern storehouse, leaving the western side less observed.

Beyond the walls, a loaded wagon bears fresh mud from the river road. Its rear boards are newly replaced, and resin scent clings to the seams beneath ordinary timber.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

Good. Keep watching. The guards protect something specific, not merely the warehouses. Learn whether the cargo, the road, or the people matter most.

Ricayu follows the pattern without moving closer. A clerk, a thin young adult human man with a narrow face, cropped brown hair, and a russet vest over a cream shirt, emerges, checks the eastern lock, and exchanges a brief signal with a wagon driver, a stocky middle-aged human woman with weathered brown skin, a red headscarf, and a mud-stained blue coat, before both disappear inside.

Corven Vale

Corven Vale

Now we know the eastern storehouse receives controlled cargo. We can approach the contract holder with questions shaped by facts, not suspicion.
