Mara Venn
Keep unloading, friends. Strong one, come inside if you want answers. We can speak without making the whole lane curious.
The orc laborers return to the cart, deliberately keeping themselves within earshot. Ricayu follows Mara through the narrow doorway, while Corven remains concealed somewhere uphill, beyond sight and reach.
Inside, the house smells of lamp oil, damp wool, and ink. Mara shuts the door halfway, leaving the laborers visible through the gap as a ready, natural audience.

Mara Venn
You asked about me, so ask. I keep records, receive deliveries, and settle wages. None of that makes me a conspirator.
She opens a ledger on a scarred table. Recent entries list sacks, tools, and hired carts. One delivery bears a small notation for blue wool and resin.

Mara Venn
There. The wool and resin are recorded plainly. A trader supplied them, and I paid for the shipment. The entry proves commerce, nothing more.
Outside, an orc laborer laughs loudly and calls for another sack, making the cover seem effortless. Mara watches Ricayu over the ledger, waiting for his next question.
“I look to see who received the blue cloth… someone followed her wearing blue cloth. I still look like an orc. A morning with the orcs… I have picked up their mannerisms and I pick up the book and look.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -2)

Still broad and green-skinned in the laborer’s disguise, Ricayu adopts the orcs’ relaxed stance and easy handling of weight. He lifts the ledger for a closer look.
The entries resolve beneath his searching gaze. The blue wool and resin were received by a river-road trader named Joren Pell, then transferred to a hired carrier marked only with a narrow boot sketch.
A second notation gives the destination: the old charcoal-burner’s track above the fir ridge. The scout’s supplies passed through Mara’s records before reaching Corven’s hidden approach.

Mara Venn
You read quickly for a laborer. That entry concerns Joren Pell’s order, not mine. I recorded the handoff because his carrier would not sign.
As Ricayu turns the page, the ledger’s metal clasp slips from his thickened fingers and strikes the table. Outside, two laborers glance toward the half-closed door.

Mara Venn
Careful. Those men trust you, but they are listening now. If you have found what you came for, close the book and leave my accounts undamaged.
“I pretend to hold the book upside down. “I like books. Like pictures.” I saw smiling a toothy tusk filled smile. “Thank you for showing me book and work. Me like work.” I say sounding like the simple laborer. I head out and tell my new orc friends, “don’t think I made boss happy. I find another cart.” They invite me to hang out anytime and give me the bar they hang out at. I’m tempted to go, but leave and take the long way home. I turn corners and switch streets in case I’m followed. I wait for Corven with the antidote so I can switch back to my human form.”
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled +2)

Ricayu
I like books. Like pictures. Thank you for showing me book and work. Me like work.
Ricayu holds the ledger upside down and flashes a broad, toothy tusk-filled smile. Mara’s eyes narrow, but she accepts the performance and takes the book back without protest.

Ricayu
Don’t think I made boss happy. I find another cart.
He steps into the lane and joins the orc laborers. They laugh, clap his broad shoulder, and offer him a place at their usual bar whenever he wants it, naming the Copper Ladle.
Ricayu leaves the invitation behind and takes the long route uphill, turning corners, changing streets, and doubling back through lanes where carts and pedestrians break any clear trail.
At a sheltered bend above the river road, he waits beneath dripping firs. The disguise remains green and massive while daylight fades across the distant roofs.

Corven Vale
You were followed by no one I could see. Drink this, and let the draught finish its work before you move again.
Corven arrives from the concealed slope and hands him the antidote. Ricayu drinks; the borrowed bulk recedes, his skin returns to its natural tone, and his human form is restored.

“I share about the blue cloth shipment and reveal the name of the woman following him. I offer to head to investigate Joren. I am offered another drought. The shop likes hiring elves and I take the potion. My appearance changes to an elegant male elf. I change my outfit with my disguise kit and get a part-time shift and work to observe and get closer.”
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled -2)

Ricayu
The blue cloth and resin passed through Mara Venn’s records. Joren Pell supplied them, and I can investigate him without exposing the scout.

Corven Vale
Then take another draught. An elf will draw less notice at the shop that hires them, and Joren’s carriers use that street.
Corven leads Ricayu to a narrow trade shop near the river road. Its proprietor, an elderly woman with silver braids and a green wool dress, studies him before offering the stoppered potion.
Ricayu drinks. His frame narrows, his ears lengthen, and his features settle into an elegant male elf’s fine appearance. A hard cramp twists his stomach, the draught’s definite cost.
From his disguise kit, Ricayu changes into a fitted dark coat, pale shirt, polished boots, and a modest sash. The proprietor hires him for a part-time shift sorting ledgers and unpacking cloth.

the shop proprietor
Elves notice quality, and my regulars trust a graceful hand with fine goods. Work steadily, ask ordinary questions, and you may keep the position.
Ricayu begins work and observes the delivery book without touching what is not his. Joren Pell’s name appears beside a morning consignment, and a carrier promises to return before dusk.

“I am an efficient worker and they need a few workers to work late. I volunteer and work the shift getting a chance to help customers and see what’s going on. I review the books, clean up ledgers, complete paperwork, clean when there is nothing going on, polish windows and I am offered a full-time position. I smile “Thank you.” She pays me for the shift and to stay till the shop closes. I continue working and get to observe.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +0)

When the shop needs hands for the late shift, Ricayu volunteers. He sorts ledgers, helps customers choose cloth, and keeps every movement measured beneath his elf disguise.
During quiet intervals, he cleans the counters, polishes the front windows, and repairs untidy entries without disturbing the original records. The shop grows orderly around him.
Customers come with ordinary needs: wool for winter, linen for household work, and narrow ribbons for merchants’ parcels. Ricayu listens while noting which deliveries draw unusual attention.
Before dusk, a carrier, a young man with a lean build, wind-browned skin, cropped dark hair, and a rain-dark blue-gray coat over sturdy trousers returns with folded cloth and a sealed bundle. His boots carry pale river clay, and a small blue thread clings to one cuff.

the shop proprietor
You have done a full day’s work in one shift, and better than most regular hands. I can offer you a full-time position, if you want it.

Ricayu
Thank you.
She pays Ricayu for the shift and the extra hours until closing. He continues working as lamps are lit, observing the carrier’s route, the sealed bundle, and every name entered beside them.

“I finish the shift and make my way to the delivery route and observe and gather the information we are after. I use my stealth to track his movements and monitor him. I catch a glimpse of my elven appearance as I browse some merchandise at a stall. I still see myself… but I am more slender, elegant, my ears and the angle of my face, even the color of my eyes… I watch from the reflection my target.”
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled +2)

Ricayu finishes the late shift beneath the shop’s lamplight, returning ledgers, folding cloth, and memorizing the carrier’s departure time without drawing notice.

the shop proprietor
Good work, elf. You may return tomorrow if you still want the position.
After leaving, Ricayu keeps to alternating streets and shopfront shadows. He follows the carrier’s pale clay marks, using carts, awnings, and passing customers to break the line of sight.
At a ribbon stall, Ricayu pauses over folded merchandise and catches his reflection in a polished brass tray. The elf is slender and elegant, with longer ears, altered eyes, and a sharper facial angle.

Ricayu
The disguise changes more than my face; even my eyes are a different color.
He watches the carrier through the reflection as the young man leaves the river road, passes a cooper’s yard, and enters a narrow counting house beside a covered arch.
From a recessed doorway, Ricayu observes the sealed bundle delivered inside. The carrier returns without it, speaks briefly with a clerk, then takes a separate lane toward the old charcoal-burner’s track.
“I watch the package from my position and it is in a dark alcove. I snatch the package and see what is inside as I duck behind barrels. I identify what the shipment is.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

The carrier disappears toward the charcoal-burner’s track. In the counting house’s dark alcove, the sealed bundle rests beside stacked ledgers, briefly unattended.
Ricayu slips from the recessed doorway, takes the package, and ducks behind barrels in the cooper’s shadow. Passing carts and hammer blows conceal the movement.
He opens the wrapping carefully. Inside lie a folded length of coarse blue wool, a small resin pouch, and a narrow iron digging spade wrapped in oilcloth.

Ricayu
This is a scout’s supply bundle, prepared for marking paths and weakening shelter supports.
Beneath the tools, a waxed scrap shows the ridge, the hidden approach, and two marked observation points near Corven’s shelter. The route is copied from someone’s careful survey.
Footsteps sound within the counting house. Ricayu folds the map, replaces the wrappings, and settles deeper behind the barrels, keeping the shipment concealed with him.
Through a gap between the barrels, he watches the covered arch and the counting-house door. Whoever ordered the bundle expects it to continue uphill before nightfall.

“I take out another scrap of paper and make a fake map to send the person to a place I ate many picnics at. An exposed hill that can be easily observed from nearby hills. I put the paper in the hiding spot and wrap it with half the cloth delivered and I take the other cloth and the real map with me. Corven and I can ambush or observe who arrives at the fake map’s destination.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +2)

Ricayu finds a spare scrap in his kit and sketches the ridge, placing a false route toward the exposed hill where he once ate picnics. Nearby slopes overlook it clearly.
He folds the fake map around half the coarse blue cloth, resin pouch, and iron spade, then returns the bundle to the counting house’s hiding place.
The genuine survey disappears beneath his coat with the remaining cloth. He leaves the alcove by a different shadowed passage, restoring the barrels and disturbed dust behind him.

Ricayu
The false destination can be watched from several hills.
Ricayu reaches the old charcoal-burner’s track before nightfall and follows it uphill, using the real map to avoid the marked observation points.

Corven Vale
You took the true survey and planted a tempting lie. Good. From the neighboring hills, we can watch who follows it without exposing the shelter.
Corven joins him beneath the firs, and together they settle above the exposed hill, hidden among wet branches while the false bundle waits below.
“Corven tells me I look good as an elf. I forgot to get the antidote from in town… “well you are teaching me archery… so maybe the elf form will learn it better.” I suggest. He looks at me and asks me why I’m helping him. “I saw you try to save people and people treated you like a criminal. I would like to hear your story. It doesn’t add up that you are an outlaw. You have embraced me as a brother, a student and could easily have fled this town but you stay. I want to be a hero one day and that means helping people. I didn’t know I’ld become an outlaw to do it. If it means I’m called one to help you, I’ll do it, because I believe in you.””
SUCCESS (Good Oratory, rolled -3)

Corven Vale
You look good as an elf. The form suits you, though I hope you remembered the antidote.

Ricayu
I forgot it in town. Since you are teaching me archery, perhaps the elf form will learn it better.

Corven Vale
You turn an inconvenience into another lesson. Why are you helping me, Ricayu?

Ricayu
I saw you try to save people, and they treated you like a criminal. I want to hear your story. It does not add up that you are an outlaw.

Ricayu
You embraced me as a brother and student, though you could have fled. I want to be a hero by helping people. If that makes me an outlaw too, I will do it, because I believe in you.
The damp branches drip around them. Without the antidote, Ricayu’s elegant elf form will last until he can safely return to town, and the exposed hill remains their only cover.

Corven Vale
Then you deserve the truth. I was outlawed after refusing a noble’s order to let a supply convoy abandon flood-struck families. The records were altered, and I became the convenient criminal. I stayed near Puka because those families still needed warning, and because someone keeps hunting the proof.
“I smile and my elegant elven form, my looks and smile take Corven by surprise. “I knew it. You are a good guy. I’ll be a part of your outlaw band until we can clear you. And if not, I guess we are stuck together. My hair begins to shift a bolder color Elven tonic continues to rewrite me. “I am sure we still have time. Let’s go observe that hill. We need to see who is behind all this.” We walk into position making every effort to not leave a single footprint. It is more stealth training for me. Corven wants to further my training out of gratitude.”
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled -2)

Ricayu
I knew it. You are a good man. I will join your outlaw band until we clear your name. If not, I suppose we are stuck together.
Ricayu smiles in his elegant elven form, and the expression catches Corven by surprise. As the tonic continues its work, his hair shifts toward a bolder color beneath the dripping branches.

Ricayu
I am sure we still have time. Let us observe that hill and see who is behind this.

Corven Vale
Then stay close, brother. Gratitude makes a poor teacher, but I can repay it with another lesson. Place each step where the rain has already spoken.
They move toward the observation position without leaving a single readable footprint. Ricayu follows disturbed earth, roots, and stones, matching his pace to dripping branches and stirring leaves.
At one muddy hollow, a sharp cramp twists Ricayu’s stomach as the tonic works through him. He pauses behind a fir, then continues, the pain his concrete price for the disguise.

Corven Vale
There. We are in position. The hill lies open below us, and anyone approaching the false route will cross our view. Watch with me, and let the ground remember nothing.

“I stay and watch with Corven. As time passes, the tonic continues to mold me into an elf. My hair color is different, my ears are not just pointed, but have an elven grace to them, musculature, even the way I’m carrying myself. I can sense the earth… feel how to stealth and walk with it versus simply on it. I let Corven see the accounts, the shipments, the records I copied and names I documented. Time passes and We watch and soon after my body hair and eyebrows shift to a blond tone. I look like a true born elf when we see who finally approaches.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Ricayu remains beside Corven beneath the wet firs, showing him copied accounts, shipment entries, carrier names, and the notes gathered from Mara’s ledger and the counting house.

Corven Vale
You kept the evidence without exposing the scout. These records may clear my name, if we learn who commissioned the survey.
Time settles over the hills. Ricayu’s hair turns a pale gold, his ears lengthen into graceful points, and his musculature and posture refine until the disguise seems born rather than brewed.

Ricayu
The earth carries movement through pressure, rain, and broken stems. I can walk with it instead of merely walking on it.
His eyebrows and body hair pale to matching blond, completing the transformation. Ricayu’s steps now merge with dripping branches and shifting leaves, leaving the muddy hollow undisturbed.
At last, a middle-aged man emerges below, lean and weathered, with a narrow face, dark cropped hair, a blue-gray coat, and pale clay drying on his boots. He carries the false bundle.

Corven Vale
That is the carrier from the counting house. Watch his hands and his destination. We learn who receives the lie before we reveal ourselves.
“I follow Corven and will stand beside my friend. The bows we brought… I feel the wood… something in it… speaks to me as if I’ve been an archer all my life. Something in my mind seems to take hold… my experience with melee weapons being replaced by memories of learning archery… the elven ancestry rooting into me and seeking to replace my skill. I am fine with it… I realize. I embrace the change, am eager for it. I want to master the bow… the weapon of my people.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Ricayu follows Corven into the wet firs and stands beside him, the bows secured across his back. Beneath his pale-gold fingers, the wood feels familiar, warm, and precisely balanced.

Ricayu
The bow speaks through its weight and tension. I know how to hold it, draw it, and let it answer me.
Old habits of melee combat recede as clear memories of archery take their place: stance, breath, anchor, release. The knowledge settles into his body without struggle.

Corven Vale
Keep your eyes on the carrier, but do not fear the change. Your hands have found the weapon they were waiting for.
Ricayu lifts the bow and draws smoothly, testing its limbs without a wasted motion. His elbow, shoulders, and back align as though shaped by years beneath a training roof.

Corven Vale
That is not a beginner’s draw. You have mastered the foundation in an instant. Now give the bow a purpose, and let patience guide the arrow.
Below, the carrier reaches the false route and studies the marked ground. Beside Corven, Ricayu watches silently, newly armed with the bow and the certainty of his elven craft.

“We watch the courier and my eyes begin to see sharper… elven eyes being able to see further and farther with unerring accuracy that makes them master archers. My elven body, features, blonde hair… and now elven eyes track the courier. The trap is sprung and we see who the courier is meeting.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Ricayu watches through the wet firs. His altered elven eyes resolve every raindrop, boot mark, and twitch of the carrier’s hands with startling distance and precision.

Corven Vale
Do not loose. Let the false trail speak first. Whoever receives that bundle may reveal the hand behind the survey.
The carrier follows the marked route across the exposed hill, then sets the false bundle beneath a split stone. He whistles once and withdraws behind a thorn hedge.
A middle-aged woman emerges from the opposite slope, lean and severe, with iron-gray braids, a russet cloak, and a small brass key hanging at her belt.

the courier
The path is marked. The shelter will be abandoned soon, unless the outlaw has found another watcher.
The woman opens the bundle, examines the false map, and looks toward the ridge. The carrier steps from cover and bows his head.

the woman with iron-gray braids
Tell Joren Pell the survey is sound. I will bring the men tonight, and Corven Vale will have nowhere left to hide.
“I let Corven lead. Let him make the call. I will obey and follow whatever he demands.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Ricayu lowers the bow and waits beside Corven, accepting his judgment. Rain threads through the firs while the woman and carrier stand exposed below.

Corven Vale
Do not move yet. We let them finish their message, then follow the carrier. The woman may lead us to Joren Pell.
Corven signals for Ricayu to retreat through the wet branches. They withdraw without disturbing the false trail, leaving the hidden watchers unseen.

Corven Vale
Stay behind me, match my steps, and keep the bow lowered. We are learning where the threat gathers, not starting a fight.
Below, the iron-braided woman folds the false map and gives the bundle back to the carrier. He bows, then descends toward the river road.

Corven Vale
Now we follow him from a distance. If he reaches Joren, we listen. If he turns toward the shelter, we warn our people first.
Ricayu follows Corven along rain-darkened roots and stones, leaving the exposed hill behind. Ahead, the carrier’s pale-clay boots begin a careful descent toward the covered arch.
“We follow in silence and the elven part of me continues to assert itself. My connection to the earth… and my ability to move quieter. I still watch Corven as he shapes my skills and trains me. I am eager to learn.”
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled +2)

Ricayu follows in silence, placing each foot where rain has already darkened roots and stones. His elven senses read pressure, broken stems, and softened earth as one continuous path.

Corven Vale
Good. Do not copy my exact stride. Let the ground choose your footing, and let your body answer without haste.
Ricayu adjusts his pace, moving quieter than before. Wet branches and distant cart wheels swallow his passage while the carrier descends unaware.

Corven Vale
You are learning quickly. Watch his shoulders, not only his boots. A man reveals his destination by how he prepares for the next turn.
The carrier glances toward the river road, then relaxes as he reaches the covered arch. Ricayu reads the change and guides his attention back to the man’s hands.

Ricayu
The earth tells me where silence is easiest.
Corven leads Ricayu behind stacked timber near the arch. Together they arrive unseen, close enough to observe the carrier entering the counting house without disturbing his trail.
“Corven looks at me. I look so different, I could walk in and no one would be able to identify me. I have coin and I could deposit it and listen with my new senses. I volunteer to go in. Corven suggests I take an Elven name and gives me the name of an elven friend he once had. I take on the alias.”
SUCCESS (Good Oratory, rolled +0)

Corven studies Ricayu’s pale-gold hair, pointed ears, and refined elven features. In the rain-muted shadows, even a close acquaintance would struggle to recognize him.

Ricayu
I have coin. I can enter, make a deposit, and listen with these new senses. I volunteer.

Corven Vale
Then use an elven name. Call yourself Edrin Valea. He was a friend of mine, clever, patient, and trusted by merchants.

Ricayu
I take the alias Edrin Valea.
Ricayu straightens his coat, counts out coin, and approaches the counting house with an unhurried merchant’s confidence. The carrier has vanished inside.
Within, a thin young clerk with ink-stained fingers, a young human man with a narrow face, cropped brown hair, and a russet vest over a cream shirt receives the deposit. Edrin’s sharpened hearing catches voices beyond the partition, discussing Joren Pell, tonight’s men, and the ridge.

Corven Vale
Good. Stay ordinary, remember every name, and leave before curiosity becomes suspicion. You have entered unseen, and now you know where the next conversation leads.
“I listen with improved elven senses as the my count out my coins, create an account, I sign, a receipt is drafted. The slow unhurried lackadaisical pace of the clerk is in my favor. I listen to the words from the back room. Words I would not have been able to hear without elven senses.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +0)

Edrin lays his coins on the counter one by one. The a thin young clerk counts them slowly, scratches the figures into a ledger, and prepares a fresh account.
While the clerk pauses over each calculation, Ricayu’s sharpened hearing separates rain, quill-scrape, and murmurs beyond the partition. He signs Edrin Valea beneath the account.

a thin young clerk
Your deposit is recorded. Here is the receipt, and here is the account mark for future transactions.
The clerk sands the wet ink and folds the receipt with deliberate care. His unhurried routine gives Ricayu time to catch every word from the back room.

the back-room speaker
Joren wants the men assembled before moonrise. The ridge must be searched from both sides, and no one is to warn Corven Vale.

the back-room speaker
The scout says the shelter is weakened already. Once the outlaw runs, the records can be recovered without witnesses.
Ricayu leaves with his signed receipt and deposit account, carrying the complete plan in memory: Joren’s men move tonight, the ridge is surrounded, and Corven’s evidence is their target.

“I walk away at a slow pace and let Corven know what I overheard. Corven looks me over and admits me being an elf has advantages, however if I stay in the form too long, I may not be able to reverse it. I nod my understanding. “If I have to be an elf to help you, I am an elf. Friends need to commit more than words.” I say with conviction. He nods and it seems he is deeply moved. I ask if we should observe and see who leaves the counting house or move to ambush the attackers at night… and then suggest we do both.”
SUCCESS (Good Oratory, rolled +2)

Edrin walks away at a slow pace, leaving the counting house behind. At the timber stacks, he rejoins Corven and quietly recounts everything overheard inside.

Corven Vale
Joren’s men will search from both sides before moonrise. They want the shelter emptied, then our records recovered without witnesses.
Corven looks over Ricayu’s elven form, from pale-gold hair to pointed ears, his expression thoughtful beneath the dripping branches.

Corven Vale
Being an elf has advantages here. But remain in this form too long, and you may not be able to reverse it.

Ricayu
If I have to be an elf to help you, I am an elf. Friends need to commit more than words.
Ricayu nods his understanding. Corven answers with a slow nod of his own, visibly moved, then glances between the counting house and the darkening ridge.

Ricayu
Should we watch who leaves the counting house, or prepare an ambush for the attackers tonight? We should do both.
“I let Corven decide.”

Corven Vale
Both, but in order. We watch the counting house until Joren’s men reveal their route, then prepare the shelter as a decoy.
Corven leads Ricayu into the timber stacks’ deeper shadow, positioning them where the counting-house door and the road toward the ridge remain visible.

Corven Vale
Keep the bow lowered and your elf identity quiet. We are observing departures, not confronting anyone, and the scout remains unaware of us.
They wait beneath dripping eaves. Cart wheels pass, lamps kindle behind windows, and the counting-house door opens twice for ordinary clerks, two adult men in plain work clothes with visible faces and short brown hair carrying ledgers.
At last, the carrier emerges with an empty bundle and turns toward the river road. A second man, a lean adult man with a weathered face, close-cropped black hair, and a dark hooded cloak over gray trousers follows minutes later, wearing a dark cloak and carrying a short iron bar.

Corven Vale
There are two routes now. I will trail the carrier. You watch the cloaked man and learn whether he joins the ridge party.
Corven slips between the timber stacks and disappears downhill. Ricayu remains concealed, the bow warm beneath his coat, while the cloaked man pauses to study the darkening road.
“I let the shadows embrace me, let the earth conceal me as my elven heritage bonds with it. I follow him and remain stealthier than I have ever been. My movements graceful, agility amplified, my elven heritage making it easier to blend in and move quietly.”
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled -2)

Ricayu lets the timber stacks and evening gloom swallow his pale-gold form. He follows the cloaked man by stepping where rain, carts, and fallen leaves have already disturbed the ground.
His elven grace makes each turn fluid, and the man never looks back. At a narrow lane, however, Ricayu’s boot nudges a loose iron hoop, sending it softly ringing across the stones.
The cloaked man stops and scans the shadows. Ricayu presses against a damp wall, holding still as the man’s gaze passes over him, then continues toward the river road.
Ricayu follows beyond the covered arch and through a yard crowded with stacked barrels. The man leaves the road, crosses a drainage ditch, and takes a concealed footpath toward the ridge.
At the path’s end, the cloaked man crouches beside a fallen birch and reveals two waiting figures below: adult men carrying sacks, rope, and short iron tools.

Varric
The counting house confirms it. Corven is watching the road, but the shelter remains exposed. We move when the moon clears the clouds.
Ricayu reaches the overlook unseen and hears the plan clearly. The ridge party will approach from the eastern slope, while the cloaked man returns to mark the western path.
“I continue to follow using stealth to move at different elevations, use the darkening night snd shadows to move through. My shape senses on alert and listening always as I track the cloaked man. He gives an order and the mercenary says his name, “yes sir…””
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled -2)

Ricayu moves along the ridge at changing elevations, using hollows, roots, and deepening shadows to remain above and behind the cloaked man. His elven hearing separates footsteps from wind and dripping leaves.
The cloaked man leaves the two mercenaries below and climbs toward the western path. Ricayu follows across a narrow ledge, but a stone shifts beneath his boot and clatters downslope.
The man pauses and looks back. Ricayu drops behind a fallen trunk, holding still until the search ends. The cost is clear: the cloaked man now knows some watcher travels nearby.

Varric
Varric, take the eastern slope. Dalen, circle wide and cover the shelter road. No fires, no shouting, and report anything unusual.

Varric
Yes, sir. Varric understands. We move when the moon clears the clouds.
The names settle into Ricayu’s memory: the cloaked commander is Varric, and the mercenary below is Dalen. Varric descends toward the western path, while Dalen gathers the others.
Ricayu tracks Varric through the dark, shifting between higher roots and lower gullies without exposing the scout or Corven’s shelter. The ridge party’s division is now clear.
“I follow, using the lessons taught to me by Corven. My feet, body and mind moving with stealth as I continue following.”
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled +4)

Ricayu follows Varric through gullies and fir roots, placing each foot where rain and fallen branches have already disturbed the ground. His breathing joins the wind.
Varric never sees him. The commander reaches the western path, pauses beneath a leaning ash, and studies the ridge while Ricayu remains hidden above.
Using Corven’s lessons, Ricayu reads Varric’s shoulders and hands. The man is not searching randomly; he is choosing a concealed route behind the shelter.

Varric
Dalen will close the road. Varric will mark the rear approach, then bring the others through the charcoal track.
Varric scratches a small cross into wet bark beside the path. Ricayu memorizes its position and discovers a second advantage: the mark points toward an unguarded drainage gully.
Ricayu slips down the gully ahead of Varric, keeping roots between them. From there, he can reach Corven’s shelter unseen and warn him without revealing the scout.
“I warn Corven.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Ricayu descends the drainage gully, using roots and wet stones for cover. He reaches the shelter’s uphill side unseen, while Varric remains unaware above.
Corven turns from the braced rear wall as Ricayu emerges beneath the firs. Ricayu quietly warns him that Varric marked the western path and plans to bring men through the charcoal track.

Corven Vale
Then the mark is a signal, not merely a guide. How many men did you see, and where are they gathering?
Ricayu indicates the eastern slope and the concealed route behind the shelter, describing Varric, Dalen, and the other waiting mercenary without exposing the scout’s position.

Corven Vale
Good work. You reached me without revealing yourself or the scout. We still have time to make the shelter appear occupied.
Corven lowers his voice and studies the weakened supports, then the dark charcoal track. He begins shifting harmless gear toward the visible entrance while keeping the true supplies hidden uphill.

Corven Vale
Stay with me. We will turn their marked rear approach into a watchpoint, and learn how many come before we decide our next move.
“I stay with Corven. He continues perfecting my stealth ability. I feel something in my even heritage unlock with the success I just had and I begin to understand more, the lessons sinking in.”
SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled +2)

Ricayu stays with Corven as they arrange decoy gear near the visible entrance. He studies every placement, then crosses between fir roots without disturbing the shelter’s story.

Corven Vale
Again. Leave the entrance as though you passed through without purpose. A watcher trusts ordinary disorder more than perfect concealment.
Ricayu repeats the route, timing each step with dripping branches and distant movement. He shifts his weight before the ground can answer, then returns with no fresh sign.

Corven Vale
That is it. You are no longer copying my method. You are reading the place, choosing what it will forgive, and letting the rest remain untouched.
Something in Ricayu’s elven heritage settles into place through the successful practice. Distance, pressure, sound, and broken growth connect into one clear language beneath his feet.

Ricayu
The forest does not hide me. It tells me where I belong.

Corven Vale
Your understanding has opened further. Hold to that patience, brother. Now we can make their watchpoint tell us who approaches.
“Corven leads as I follow. We watch and prepare to ambush the attackers. My bow and elven ancestry.. my ranged ability replacing my melee skill… I am ready to fire my bow… to connect further with my ancestry. I feel a call of the elven goddess embracing me as I embrace my new heritage.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -2)

Corven leads Ricayu through the firs toward the marked watchpoint. Ricayu follows without leaving a readable trail, bow in hand, arrow nocked but lowered beneath the dripping branches.

Corven Vale
Take the higher root line. From there, you can cover the charcoal track and the eastern slope without exposing our position.
Ricayu settles above the drainage gully and raises the bow. His altered elven senses join distance, pressure, and sound into one precise awareness, while the weapon’s balance feels instinctively familiar.

Ricayu
The bow belongs in my hands, and the forest carries every approach.
Below, Varric advances first, followed by Dalen, a lean adult man with a square jaw, cropped brown hair, and a weathered dark-green jacket over sturdy trousers and three armed men, adult men in rough brown and gray work clothes, each carrying a short weapon from the eastern slope. Ricayu aligns his aim across the safest retreat route, ready to fire if Corven gives the signal.

Corven Vale
There are five. Hold until they pass the birch, then we can strike the ground before them and drive them into our chosen path.
Ricayu draws smoothly, but the damp string snaps against his bracer with a sharp twang. Varric looks uphill. The ambush remains set, though their concealment has been compromised.
“We move in the dark ten feet further… the new angle is better as I am. It sweeping across the battlefield, but from one to one behind… the targets overlapping better. I would have never understood this, but elven instinct fill my mind with knowledge of ranged combat.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Ricayu moves ten feet through the darkness, following the higher root line where wet earth and fallen needles conceal his passage. The new angle opens across the battlefield.
From behind one fir, Varric, Dalen, and the three armed men, three adult human men with sun-browned skin, rough-cut hair, and weathered faces overlap along his sightline, each movement crossing another’s retreat. Ricayu remains hidden above the gully.

Ricayu
Elven instinct fills my mind with the knowledge of ranged combat. One target can cover the next, and the whole group can be controlled by a single line of fire.

Corven Vale
Better. Their formation has become one problem instead of five. Hold your aim, and wait for my signal.
Below, Varric advances past the birch, still searching the trees. Dalen and the others follow in a compressed line, their weapons lowered as they enter the overlapping angle.

Corven Vale
Now. Strike the ground before Varric, not the men. Make them choose the route we prepared.
Ricayu releases. The arrow cuts through the rain and bites into the mud before Varric’s leading boot, scattering water and forcing the group to halt together.
“The next arrow is already knocked. The release of the arrow awakens something about archery inside of me… something elven. My elven ancestry asserts itself more.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -2)

Ricayu draws the next arrow beneath the rain. The bow settles against his palm, and the forest seems to widen around the narrow line between him and his target.
When he releases, the motion becomes instinctive. His shoulders, fingers, breath, and sight align with an elven certainty older than any lesson Corven gave him.
The arrow strikes a hanging branch beside the eastern slope, snapping it hard enough to shower leaves over the armed men. Their formation breaks, and the prepared route becomes their only clear escape.

Corven Vale
That was no learned trick. Your blood remembered the bow, and it chose the exact point that would turn them without exposing the scout.
The awakening leaves Ricayu’s drawing fingers split and bleeding where the wet string has rubbed them raw. The pain is small, but every subsequent release will demand care.

Varric
Move east! Keep together! Someone is above us, and I will not have them driving us like animals.
Varric’s gaze searches the firs while Dalen and the others retreat along the forced path. Corven remains still beside Ricayu, watching the men reveal where they intend to regroup.
“My next arrow is ready and I let Corven tell me when and where to fire.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Melee Weapons, rolled +0)

Ricayu nocks another arrow and holds the draw beneath the dripping firs. His injured fingers tremble once, then settle as he waits for Corven’s signal.

Corven Vale
Hold. Let Varric lead them past the split birch. When Dalen reaches the fallen stone, fire at the ground between them.
Varric drives the retreat east, glancing uphill while Dalen tries to keep the three armed men together. Their panic compresses them along the narrow route.

Corven Vale
Now, Ricayu. Mark the earth before Dalen, then shift your aim to the rear. Keep them moving, and leave every man standing.
Ricayu releases. The arrow strikes beside the fallen stone, kicking mud across Dalen’s boots and forcing him aside. Before the group can recover, Ricayu sends a second shaft into the retreating path behind them.
The men halt between two warnings, their escape narrowed to the open eastern slope. Varric looks toward the ridge, recognizing disciplined archery but not the hidden archer.

Corven Vale
Good. They are contained without bloodshed. Keep the bow ready, brother. We will make them choose between surrender and abandoning the ridge.
“I am an elven archer. I hold the now as if I was born with it in my hands. My body and mind sharpened for this moment. I am eager bonfire more arrows and await Corven’s orders.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)
Ricayu keeps the bow raised, its balance settled into his pale-gold hands. His injured fingers hold steady now, and his sharpened sight tracks every man below without haste.

Corven Vale
Stay ready, brother. Do not fire unless they break for the trees. Let fear and open ground do the work first.
Varric studies the two warning arrows, then the exposed slope. Dalen grips his short weapon while the three armed men glance between their commander and the hidden ridge.

Varric
Hold formation. The archer wants us alive, which means Corven is close. Find the voice, and do not waste the opening.

Corven Vale
You heard him. They know we are here, but not where. Keep your aim on the ground before them and make their next step a choice.
Ricayu shifts his aim across the open earth, covering Varric, Dalen, and the eastern retreat in turn. Below, the men hesitate, their route controlled without a wound.

Dalen
Varric, enough. We cannot cross that slope under his bow. Give the order, or we leave before he chooses a man for us.
“I wait, watch and am ready as an instrument of death, warning or injury with the bow that I feel at home holding. Corven commands and I release.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Melee Weapons, rolled -2)

Corven Vale
Wait. Dalen is right about the slope, but fear serves us better than blood. When I command, place the arrow before Varric’s retreat.
Ricayu holds the bow at full draw, pale-gold hair stirring in the rain. His sight follows Varric’s shifting stance, Dalen’s tense grip, and the narrow ground between them.

Varric
You think a warning makes us helpless? Advance together. Force the archer to choose.

Corven Vale
Now, Ricayu. Break their formation, not their bodies.
Ricayu releases. The arrow strikes hard between Varric and Dalen, spraying mud across their boots and driving them apart. The wet string tears Ricayu’s drawing finger open, and blood slicks the grip.

Dalen
Enough! We surrender the slope. Lower your weapons, Varric, before the next shaft chooses flesh.
Varric raises one hand, but his eyes remain fixed on the firs. Below, the three armed men lower their weapons slowly, while the eastern path stays open behind them.
“I do as Corven commands and am ready.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Ricayu keeps the bow trained on the ground before Varric, shoulders steady despite the torn finger. He follows Corven’s command exactly, ready to fire only if the surrender breaks.

Corven Vale
Hold there. Set the weapons down, one at a time, and step away from them.
Dalen lowers his short weapon first and moves back. The three armed men follow, placing their weapons in the mud beneath Ricayu’s watchful aim.

Varric
You have your surrender. Keep that archer hidden, Corven. I want to know who commands this ridge.

Corven Vale
The hidden archer commands nothing. He protects people you came to frighten and evidence you came to steal.
Corven steps into view with his bow lowered but ready. Ricayu remains above the gully, covering the eastern path while Varric studies the outlaw’s familiar face.

Dalen
Varric, tell him about Joren. If we speak plainly, perhaps we leave this slope alive and unbound.
“I listen eagerly to hear about Joren Pell’s account of the shipment. My bow is trained, ready and my mind clear to unleash the weapon of my elven people.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)
Ricayu keeps the bow trained on the ground before Varric, his torn finger braced carefully against the grip. Every movement below remains clear through the rain.

Dalen
Joren Pell paid us to carry the wool, resin, and spade to Mara Venn’s records, then onward to the charcoal-burner’s track.

Dalen
He said the supplies would mark Corven’s shelter and weaken its rear wall. The scout mapped the approach, but Joren ordered tonight’s search.
Varric’s jaw tightens. Dalen keeps his hands raised while the three disarmed men watch the eastern slope and listen for any signal from their commander.

Dalen
Joren wanted Corven driven out, not killed. He promised payment when the records were recovered and the altered convoy accounts disappeared.

Varric
Enough, Dalen. Joren bought your labor, not your loyalty. He answers to someone above him, and that hand will not forgive this surrender.
The account settles the shipment’s path and purpose. Ricayu’s arrow remains ready, covering the men while Corven studies Varric for the name still withheld.

“I let Corven get the information he needs to clear his name, the evidence to make things right. I am his instrument and will do whatever he demands.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -3)

Ricayu lowers the bow only when Corven raises two fingers. His torn drawing finger has reopened, blood slicking the grip, but he keeps the men covered as ordered.

Corven Vale
Dalen, repeat everything before witnesses. Varric, name the hand above Joren. No one leaves until the truth is complete.

Dalen
Joren reported to Lady Merrow of House Seln. She supplied the altered convoy accounts and promised Corven’s outlawry would stand once the shelter records vanished.
Corven removes the copied survey, Mara Venn’s ledger details, and the counting-house receipt from his coat. He places them beside the surrendered weapons in the mud.

Corven Vale
These records, the shipment trail, and your sworn words name the method and the patron. My innocence no longer rests on my claim alone.

Varric
You have enough to accuse House Seln, but not enough to survive its influence. Still, I will testify. Joren’s payment ledger is hidden beneath the counting house floor.
The evidence is now joined to names, routes, payment, and testimony. Corven binds the surrendered men for the journey to Puka, while Ricayu wraps his bleeding finger and keeps watch over the eastern slope.

“As we walk the prisoners back, I hear the voice of the elven goddess and alas we walk I open my heart to her. I will be her champion. I will serve her. I accept her… my finger is healed and my heritage becomes bound to the elven race. I walk behind with my bow at the ready and I feel a transformation from within. My spirit and soul reshaped into the form my goddess molds me into.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)
The prisoners trudge downhill between Corven and Ricayu. Rain darkens the path, while Ricayu walks behind with his bow ready and his wounded finger wrapped tight.

the elven goddess
Open yourself, child of the elder blood. I do not offer comfort without duty, nor belonging without consequence.

Ricayu
I accept you. I will be your champion, and I will serve you.
Warmth gathers beneath Ricayu’s bandage. The torn flesh closes cleanly, but the pain leaves him briefly unsteady, and one arrow slips from his quiver into the mud.

the elven goddess
Then bear my heritage openly. Your spirit and soul are bound to the elven people, and your path will answer to more than your own name.
Something deep within Ricayu reshapes. His bond to elven blood becomes permanent, not a disguise or tonic’s borrowed shape, while his pale hair and pointed ears settle into their true form.

Corven Vale
Ricayu, you stumbled. Are you hurt? Keep watch if you can. We still have prisoners, evidence, and a long road before Puka.

“I nod at Corven. Inwardly I thank the elven goddess and pledge to follow her and honor her. I hear her tell me that elves remain with their people for a hundred years, learning their ways, train and mastering skills. She will send someone to bring me to the fold soon. I thank her again and feel her presence with me. I watch the prisoners and let my perception watch carefully and am ready with my now for any surprises.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +0)

Ricayu
I thank the elven goddess inwardly, pledge to follow her, and promise to honor her people.
Ricayu nods to Corven and resumes his watch. His true elven features remain calm as he studies the prisoners, the path, and every shifting hand.

the elven goddess
Elves remain with their people for a hundred years, learning our ways, training, and mastering the skills their service requires.

the elven goddess
I will send someone to bring you into the fold soon. Until then, walk faithfully among those who have become your charge.
Her presence rests quietly within him, steady as warmth beneath the healed skin. The forest’s rain and the prisoners’ footfalls return to the forefront of his senses.

Varric
Your archer watches us like a hawk. If Dalen speaks truth, you should fear what waits in Puka more than what followed us here.
One prisoner shifts toward the roadside brush, testing the escort’s spacing. Ricayu notices before the movement becomes an attempt, and Corven turns sharply toward him.
“An arrow is ready to fly and my sharp elven eyes hold no warning but only the promise of death should be try.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Ricayu raises the bow and draws until the string rests firm against his anchor. His sharp elven eyes fix on the shifting prisoner, promising death without a word.

Corven Vale
Stop where you are. Ricayu has the road covered, and he will not need a second warning.
The prisoner, an adult man with a stocky build, a crooked nose, and a patched gray tunic, freezes with one foot angled toward the brush. The others turn their faces toward Ricayu’s hidden line of fire, suddenly aware of how little cover the road offers.

Varric
Stand down, fool. That archer is not bluffing, and I will not have your panic get us killed.

Dalen
Hands where they can be seen. We surrendered, and we walk to Puka alive if everyone remembers it.
The prisoner slowly raises both hands and steps back onto the road. Corven closes the spacing, binding the man’s wrists while Ricayu keeps the drawn arrow trained on him.

Corven Vale
Good. Keep that promise, Ricayu. Your warning has secured the escort, and now this one may tell us who else is waiting ahead.
“Corven secures each of their wrists and then tethers them together like a prison chain gang with a rope. My bow and sight hold a predatory and vicious countenance and warning to cooperate. We continue and arrive in town. Corven leads and I am ready for his order.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Corven binds each prisoner’s wrists, then threads a single rope through the restraints, spacing them into a tense, stumbling chain. Ricayu covers the line with his drawn bow.
His pale elven face hardens into a predatory warning, eyes fixed on every hand and shoulder. The prisoners keep their heads forward and obey the rope’s direction.

Corven Vale
Walk steadily. No sudden turns, no reaching for the brush, and no testing Ricayu’s patience. We reach Puka together.
Corven leads them down the rain-darkened road. Ricayu follows at overwatch distance, bow ready, sight tracking the prisoners while the tether keeps their movements joined.

Varric
Understood. Dalen, keep the others moving. We have surrendered, and we will not throw away our lives on the road.
By dusk, Puka’s timber gate rises beyond the fields. Two adult gate guards in quilted brown coats watch the approaching chain, one a broad-shouldered young woman with dark braided hair and a square chin, the other a lean middle-aged man with a ruddy face and graying hair, their hands resting near sheathed swords.

Corven Vale
We have prisoners, testimony, and evidence for the town authorities. Ricayu, stay ready until the guards take custody.

“With the evidence, testimony and records we reason that there is no time to waste. The testimony must be recorded as there are other players involved. My reasoning helps to get to a judge and he listens to the accounts, reviews the evidence and records.”
SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +1)

The guards take custody of the prisoners at Puka’s gate. Corven presents the records, while Ricayu keeps the scout’s identity concealed and preserves the evidence concerning Joren and House Seln.
Within the town hall, an elderly woman judge with a narrow build, silver hair braided beneath a black veil, and a sharp scar across her chin receives them at a crowded records table.

the elderly woman judge
Set every document before me. Testimony will be recorded separately, and no accusation will be accepted without its supporting account.
A clerk, a young adult human man with a slim build, a round face, short dark hair, and a russet vest over a cream shirt, records the prisoners’ names and statements records the prisoners’ names and statements. Dalen recounts Joren Pell’s payments, Varric confirms the ridge operation, and the altered convoy accounts are placed beside Mara Venn’s ledger entries.

the elderly woman judge
These records connect the wool, resin, spade, scout’s survey, and shelter attack. The testimony identifies Joren Pell and names Lady Merrow of House Seln as the alleged patron.
The judge seals the testimony, inventories the evidence, and orders the counting house searched for Joren’s payment ledger. Corven’s account is entered as a formal petition to clear his outlawry.

This matter now has an official record. Joren Pell and Lady Merrow will answer for it, while the concealed scout remains unnamed until evidence safely permits identification.
