Ash, a massive adult male werewolf with a broad muzzle and amber eyes and Finn lead the hunting team along the outer boundary, their massive gray-brown forms moving as one. The pack’s den and younger wolves remain safely behind.
Both twins halt. An unfamiliar scent reaches them through pine resin and damp earth, unmistakably wolfkin yet threaded with exhaustion, old smoke, and human fear.
Eno Phmann steps into the open: a slim young-adult wolfkin male with close-fitted gray fur, black-dark ears and muzzle, and a travel-worn dark cloak. His breathing is ragged, and one hand grips a snapped wooden token marked with an unknown pack sign.

Eno Phmann
I know this is inhabited territory. I mean no challenge. Please, grant me shelter long enough to rest.
Finn circles downwind while Ash holds the team in place. Eno lowers his gaze, keeping the broken token visible rather than hiding it among his cloak.

Eno Phmann
My pack sign was broken behind me. I followed the stream because I could not keep running blind.
Ash scents the ground beyond Eno’s boots. Fresh human tracks enter the trees behind him, several sets deep in the mud, leading directly toward the boundary.
“I look at the smaller wolfkin. I see the tracks his boots make and tell him to follow me. I leave no tracks as we lead him along the river, the the rocky parts upstream. The same path we allowed Marek to escape and join the path so long ago. I remember being a cub, offering the suggestion that Marek join our pack and he escaped his pursuers and still lives with us. When we reach the upper stream, I have Eno climb on my back as if I’m a wolf mount and have him hold on as I bound back to safety in our lands.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +2)

Ash
Follow me.
Ash studies Eno Phmann’s bootprints, then turns toward the river. He leads Eno upstream across stones and shallow water, leaving no readable trail behind.

Eno Phmann
You move like the river itself. I will trust your path.
The route carries Ash past the old crossing where Marek once escaped his pursuers. The memory returns clearly: a cub’s suggestion, a hidden trail, and the pack’s shelter still holding Marek safe.
At the upper stream, Ash lowers his massive shoulders. Eno climbs onto his back and grips the thick fur at his neck, careful of the bound right shoulder.

Eno Phmann
Hold steady, then. I will not fight your stride.
Ash bounds downstream over rock and water, carrying Eno swiftly without leaving tracks. He reaches the pack’s lands and brings the Eno Phmann safely within their guarded boundaries.

SUCCESS (Legendary Oratory, rolled +3)

Ash
Who pursues you? I would like to hear your story.
Ash lowers himself beside the stream, keeping his bound right shoulder still. Finn signals the hunting team to watch the trees while Eno finds a flat stone to sit upon.

Eno Phmann
Six men pursue me, led by a scarred road captain named Varric Holt. They serve no lord openly. They want the broken pack sign I carry, and they killed the messenger who entrusted it to me.
Eno turns the snapped token in his fingers. Its carved mark shows a split crescent over three short lines, worn smooth where someone held it in fear.

Eno Phmann
I was a courier and a student among my people. Holt’s men raided our camp, searching for names and routes. I escaped through smoke, but they followed my trail to this river.

Eno Phmann
The token proves their target is not merely me. It identifies a hidden winter refuge farther north. If your pack shelters me, I can lead you around it and warn those inside.
Finn scents the token, then looks sharply toward the northern ridge. Eno’s story gives Ash more than an enemy’s name: it reveals a refuge the pack can protect before Holt reaches it.

“I look at the strange clothing the wolfkin is wearing. I sniff him life I would a wolf I met in the wilds. I wonder at why he wears the garments. Finn and I speak and he likes the wolfkin. I trust my brother and nod “I will speak to the elders about giving you shelter.” I stand to my full height and the wolfkin looks like a pup in comparison. I speak to the elder’s and present Eno and let them hear his story. I advocate for a shelter for him. The pack is willing to let him stay in Finn and my den since we feel so strongly about him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Oratory, rolled +0)

Ash studies Eno’s travel-worn dark cloak and snapped token, then lowers his muzzle to scent him. Smoke, exhaustion, strange pack-mark, and no immediate deceit cling to the wolfkin.

Finn
His scent is frightened, not hunting. I like him, brother. We should keep him safe in our den.
Ash trusts Finn’s judgment. He rises to his full towering height despite the bound shoulder, making Eno look almost pup-small beside him.

Ash
I will speak to the elders about giving you shelter.
Ash leads Eno before the flat stone, with Finn beside him and the hunting team guarding the northern trees. The elders gather to hear the account.

Eno Phmann
Varric Holt and five men pursue me for this broken sign. It identifies a hidden winter refuge farther north, and I can guide your pack around it so its people are warned.
Ash presents Eno’s story and advocates shelter without softening the danger. The elders accept his judgment, granting Eno refuge in Ash and Finn’s den under their protection.

Finn asks about his clothing and lets my brother try on some of his clothes. I rest to let my shoulder heal. Finn tries to dress us both up and he becomes less dressed while he dons things on us. I am so big though… there aren’t many things that can fit me.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Inside the den, Finn and the younger wolves gather around Eno, folding their bodies against his cloak and legs until he is held within the warm pack-pile.

Eno Phmann
I have sheltered in ruins, wagons, and tree hollows. Never beneath an entire pack. I am not certain where to put my paws.

Finn
Anywhere is fine. Your cloak looks uncomfortable. I have clothes you can try, and Ash can try them too.
Finn retrieves his spare tunic and soft leggings from a den alcove, then helps Eno settle them over his travel-worn layers before offering the remaining pieces to Ash.
Ash lowers himself carefully, keeping the bound right shoulder supported. Finn fusses over both of them, draping cloth across their massive frames while stripping away his own extra layers.

Finn
This one fits Eno. The tunic reaches Ash’s chest, but not his waist. The leggings are hopeless. Still, you both look properly dressed.
The den settles into quiet warmth. Ash rests beside Eno and Finn, shoulder supported against the bedding as healing works steadily through the joint.

“I rest and in the morning my shoulder feels better. It has taken months of resting, but the soreness seems to have faded. I dress in the strange tunic Eno gave me and Finn also wears clothes. “Why are we wearing these?” I ask. Eno suggests it will make the villagers feel we are friendly. I am not sure why wearing cloth makes me look friendly but decide to trust Eno. We draw close to the village.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Morning finds the village close beyond the alder trees, its thatched roofs bright with dew and thin cookfire smoke drifting above packed earth. Ash’s shoulder feels fully rested after months of healing, though the softened hide remains bound around it.
Ash wears Eno’s strange tunic over his massive frame, while Finn has dressed in borrowed cloth as well. Eno walks beside them, cloak gathered neatly, and the three approach without haste.

Ash
Why are we wearing these?

Eno Phmann
Villagers read clothing before they read intentions. Cloth tells them we come as people willing to meet them, not merely as wolves from the forest.
Ash considers the explanation, then trusts Eno. His powerful stride stays smooth despite the bound shoulder, and Finn matches him as they draw close enough to hear a handcart creak within the village.

Finn
They are looking at us, brother. I think Eno’s cloth is doing its work.
A few villagers pause outside a grain shed, wary but not fleeing. Beyond them, a child points toward the northern road, where fresh hoofprints and a broken red cord mark something recently passed.
“I examine the tracks and the red cord using my sense of smell and perception to study the markings. I use reasoning to figure out what it means.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

Ash lowers his muzzle over the road. Damp earth holds several horse tracks, fresh enough to retain sharp edges, with one deeper print showing a rider halted abruptly.
He scents leather, sweat, wet iron, and the same bitter cord-fiber found on the red marker. The riders came from the north, paused at the village, then turned toward the alder road.
The cord was not dropped by accident. Its fibers are cleanly severed, and the knot bears a flattened smear of road dust, making it a deliberate sign left where pursuers would notice it.

Eno Phmann
That is Holt’s red cord. He marks roads when his men have searched them, or when he wants his scouts to know a target has been found.
Ash follows the overlapping scents and reads the disturbance: six riders passed, but only four horses remain distinct beyond the shed. Two men dismounted and entered the village.

Finn
Then they are not gone. They are close, brother.
The broken cord points northward while the freshest boot marks angle behind the grain shed. The patrol split to watch both roads, searching for Eno and testing the village’s response.
““Let’s hunt.” I say licking my muzzle with my tongue.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

Ash
Let’s hunt.
Ash licks his muzzle and lowers his massive head. Despite the softened hide around his right shoulder, he scents the two hidden men behind the grain shed and fixes their positions.

Finn
Together, brother. I will circle the shed while you take the roadward side.
Finn slips through the alder shadows with the hunting team. Ash advances at a measured pace, keeping his bound shoulder protected while the village falls silent around him.

Eno Phmann
The nearer one is watching the road. The other is inside the shed, listening for movement.
Ash’s hunters close the paths behind the grain shed. Fresh horse scent, leather, and sweat gather in one tight pocket, while the northern road remains open for the fleeing riders.

Finn
They are surrounded, brother. Give the warning, and we will drive them from the village without letting them reach Eno.
“I give the warning to the villagers and then with my pack: Finn and Eno hunt the men to take them out.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Oratory, rolled +1)

Ash
Villagers, stay inside and bar your doors. Armed men are behind the grain shed. We will drive them away from your homes.
Ash’s warning carries across the packed earth with commanding force. Doors close, shutters drop, and the villagers retreat from the open road as Finn’s hunters seal the shed’s approaches, a group of adult werewolves with gray-brown fur and powerful builds.

Finn
Move now, brother. I will cut off the road while Eno and the others turn them from the shed.
Ash surges forward with the pack. His bound shoulder stays guarded as he drives the roadward man away from the village, while Finn’s flank removes every escape toward the alder trees.

Eno Phmann
The shed man is moving. I have him. Keep the captain’s path closed, and they will not reach their horses.
The hidden men break cover, startled by the coordinated rush. One stumbles into the pack’s closing circle; the other turns toward the road and finds Ash blocking him.
Within moments, both pursuers are driven down and pinned without killing blows. Finn guards their weapons, Eno secures the nearer man’s wrists, and the village remains unharmed.

Question the captured pursuers
“We take the men into the woods bound. They seem uneasy around my massive form. I smell the fear on them and play up being the monster. Finn and Eno warn them that I am hungry and love eating men. They warn I can smell lies and am allowed to eat those who lie. I snap my jaws in front of their faces. Fear rolls off them and I growl. “Speak. Tell me everything… you know of what I speak… I give only one chance.” I say as saliva drips from my mouth. I feel the primal part of me and channel it letting it channel through me. I feel something aggressive and different take hold of me and I growl a scary menacing growl.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Ash leads the two bound men into the woods, his massive frame looming beneath the pines. Finn and Eno flank them while the hunting team seals the path back to the village.

Finn
He is hungry, and he loves eating men who threaten his pack. He can smell lies, too. Those who lie are allowed to feed him.

Eno Phmann
Speak carefully. Tell the truth, and perhaps Ash remains patient. Lie, and you will learn exactly how well he can scent it.

Ash
Speak. Tell me everything you know of what I speak. I give only one chance.
Ash snaps his jaws before the nearer man’s face. Saliva threads from his teeth as a deep growl rolls through the trees, and the primal force within him surges forward.
Fear pours from both captives. Ash’s aggressive presence bears down on them until their resistance collapses, though his bound shoulder remains carefully guarded.

The Road Captain's Scout

I hunt bandits. If you get caught by me again, I eat you.” I growl with the primal venom that is pouring off me. “Perhaps a career change.” Finn recommends. We take their weapons, let them keep their coin and check their pockets and packs for any other clues. We also keep their horses.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Ash
You get to live, but I am going to mark you. I have your taste now. Return to them, or cross my path again, and I eat you. I hunt bandits. Perhaps choose a different career.
Ash licks a gob of saliva across each captive’s face, then growls over them with primal force. Their fear spikes, and both men understand the warning as a promise they dare not test.

Finn
Perhaps a career change would serve you. Honest roads may keep your faces attached to your heads.
Finn and Eno strip the captives of swords, knives, and bows, leaving their coin untouched. Ash checks the packs and pockets while the hunters hold the men still.
The search reveals a rough map of the alder road, a spare red cord, and a wax tablet listing the village, the northern refuge, and a dusk rendezvous.

The Road Captain's Scout
That meeting is Holt’s command post, beyond the old lime kiln. Four riders wait there, and more men may join them after dusk.

Ash studies the wax tablet beneath the pines. The village, northern refuge, old lime kiln, and dusk rendezvous are marked in a compact route, with patrol timings scratched beside each entry.

Ash
The lime kiln is Holt’s command post, and the refuge lies beyond the northern fork.

Eno Phmann
These marks confirm what I feared. The refuge is still hidden, but Holt’s men know the roads that approach it.
Finn and Eno load the captured bows, swords, knives, spare cord, provisions, and survey papers onto the horses. Ash directs the arrangement while keeping his bound shoulder protected.

Finn
The horses can carry enough arms for the refuge and still manage the northern trail. We should leave the coin. It will not defend anyone.
The saddlebags fill with seized weapons and supplies, secured beneath blankets and spare tack. The wax tablet remains with Ash, its route now understood and ready to guide the pack toward the winter refuge.
“I trade some of my earned coins for a healing potion available at the village shop to heal my shoulder. I drink the potion and let the healing work. We follow the map and the directions of the bandits to get the other riders.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Ash returns to the village shop with Eno and Finn. The shopkeeper, an elderly woman with a narrow frame, silver braid, green wool dress, and sharp watchful eyes, examines his bound shoulder before accepting the coins.

The Shopkeeper
A healing draught, then. Drink it here, and give it time. Do not spend restored strength foolishly.
Ash drinks the bitter red potion. Warmth spreads beneath the softened hide, easing the joint until he can roll and lift the right shoulder freely; the binding is removed, its work complete.

Eno Phmann
The tablet and the scout’s directions agree. We follow the northern fork, pass the lime kiln, and reach Holt’s rendezvous before dusk.
The pack leaves the village with the captured horses and seized arms. Ash carries the wax tablet, while Eno guides them along the northern fork through alder shade and rising ground.
Ash reads the route precisely, finding the old lime kiln before the light fades. Beyond its broken stone wall, four riders, all adult human men in dark travel cloaks and battered leather armor, with hard-faced expressions and weapons ready wait beside a covered wagon, weapons ready and horses saddled.

Finn
There they are, brother. Holt’s remaining riders have found their command post, and they have not yet seen us.
““We stalk and capture one. Knock him out and pull him away. We then stalk behind the ruined walls to get close. Then we pounce and capture the rest of them… we each get a target after we take out the first one.””
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +1)

Ash lowers himself behind the broken wall, and Finn, Eno, and the hunting team spread silently through the rubble. The four riders remain focused on their wagon.
Ash slips from shadow behind the rearmost rider, clamps a powerful hand over his mouth, and strikes precisely behind the ear. The man goes limp without a cry.
Ash drags the unconscious rider into the kiln’s darkness and covers him beneath fallen brush. Eno checks the man’s breathing, then signals that the concealment is sound.

Eno Phmann
Three remain by the wagon. Finn has the left pair, and I will take the rider nearest the wall.
Ash circles behind the ruined wall, keeping low among loose stones. Finn and Eno move with him, while the hunting team closes every path toward the horses.
At Ash’s signal, the pack pounces. Finn drives two riders down, Eno binds the nearest man with cord, and Ash pins the last before he can draw steel.

The Captured Rider
Wait! We surrender. We did not see you come, and we will not reach for our weapons.
“We bind them, including the man hidden in the brush, search them, take their weapons, search the wagon and then begin questioning them after reviewing what we find.”

“We bind them, including the man hidden in the brush, search them, take their weapons, search the wagon and then begin questioning them after reviewing what we find.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

Ash binds the three surrendered riders with the spare red cord, then retrieves the unconscious man from the brush. Eno checks each knot and their breathing.
The pack strips away swords, knives, bows, and hidden belt blades. Ash searches their clothing and finds coins, road rations, a lime-kiln key, and a sealed message bearing Varric Holt’s mark.
Inside the wagon, Ash finds spare tack, blankets, lamp oil, binding cord, a rough northern road map, and a locked chest. The kiln key opens it.
The chest holds stamped travel papers, a list of villages, and three names marked for seizure. One entry identifies Eno’s winter refuge, while another orders the riders to question villagers about Ash’s pack.

Eno Phmann
They are not merely hunting me. Holt is mapping every settlement between this kiln and the northern refuge.

The Captured Rider

You heard him. Ash is hungry, and he has little patience for men who threaten his pack. Speak truthfully.

Eno Phmann
His appetite is not a story meant to frighten you. Give him one honest answer, or discover how serious that warning is.
Ash steps before the bound riders and lets the primal force within him rise. His massive frame swells, shoulders hunching as his muzzle lengthens and his presence becomes monstrous beneath the kiln’s shadow.

Ash
Where is Holt now? Where are the rest of the pursuers?
Ash swells larger beneath the kiln’s shadow. His fur stands wild, his muzzle lengthens, and his changed voice growls with a force that makes the wagon tremble.

The Captured Rider
Holt is at the old quarry. He moved there before nightfall, with the main command group and the courier.
The rider’s bravado collapses. Around him, the other captives stare at Ash’s monstrous shape while the hunting team holds every path through the broken kiln.

The Captured Rider
Two teams watch the northern refuge. Another team searches the villages south of here. Four riders remain at the quarry with Holt, and six more guard the courier’s route.

The Captured Rider
They plan to meet at the quarry before dawn, then move on the refuge. The courier carries Holt’s orders and travels from the eastern road under a red cord.
““I am going to mark you.” I lick them leaving a giant glob of saliva drenching their faces. “I have your taste and your scent. Run. Never look back. Forget you heard of Holt. If I see you, smell you and we meet again… no warning. I eat you.” I growl as I swell even more. Finn adds, “a career change might be good, he eats any bandits he meets twice.” The bandits are allowed to take ten silver from their coin pouch and we keep the rest. We take the wagon, the four new horses, the weapons and load it all up. We then hide the cart in brush off the road and cover it with fallen branches and forest debris. “We take out Holt now. We take out his men. We question Holt to see if he has a master, but we end him. We let the men meeting Holt later to approach the camp we emptied and take them out when they arrive later.” I explain the plan.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Ash looms over the captives, fur bristling as his muzzle lengthens further. He drenches each face with a heavy glob of saliva, then releases a thunderous growl.

Ash
I have your taste and your scent. Run. Never look back. Forget you heard of Holt. If I see you again, I eat you.

Finn
A career change might be good. He eats any bandits he meets twice.
The captives flee into the trees, taking only ten silver from their pouch. Ash’s pack keeps the remaining coin, weapons, four horses, wagon, and supplies.
They hide the wagon off the road beneath brush, fallen branches, and forest debris, concealing the seized arms and provisions while the horses are led into deeper cover.

Ash
We take out Holt now. We take out his men. We question Holt to learn whether he has a master, but we end him. The men meeting him later approach the emptied camp, and we take them out when they arrive.

SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +1)

Ash leads Eno and the pack through the dark timber, keeping low among stones and roots. The quarry camp emerges ahead, its guards scattered beneath the broken cliff.
The first two guards never hear the approach. Ash and Finn strike from opposite shadows, lowering both men silently before Eno binds their wrists with the spare red cord.
A third guard turns at a faint shift of gravel. Ash crosses the distance in one silent bound, knocks him unconscious, and secures him beside the others.
The remaining guard reaches for his weapon, but Eno’s rogueish feint draws his gaze aside. Ash pounces, pins him without killing, and binds him firmly.
Varric Holt stands beside the quarry fire, startled too late. Ash’s massive weight drives him down, while Finn removes his weapon and Eno knots his arms.

Varric

Holt’s wrists and ankles are secured, his weapons stripped away, and the quarry falls silent around five helpless captives. Eno checks every knot while the pack watches the roads.

The firelight catches Ash’s altered silhouette. The bound guard recoils against the rope, but Varric Varric remains awake beneath him, staring up at the transformed werewolf.

Varric
The refuge is real. Two teams watch its northern approaches, and my remaining men are meant to drive its people south before winter.
Varric swallows, his voice losing its earlier confidence. Eno leans closer, listening for every detail, while Finn keeps the road covered beyond the fire.

Varric
I serve no lord. I sell roads, names, and safe crossings to whoever pays. The courier carries my orders to the eastern road, and the quarry was our meeting place.

Varric
The northern teams answer to me. They do not know this pack has taken Eno in, and they will move at dawn unless warned.
“Eno nods to me and I before I can stop myself I’ve bitten off Holt’s head. The primal energy swelling as the energy rooks through me, it being fed… I grow… the power rushing through me and I’ve eaten Varric Holt before I can stop myself.”

Ash lunges, jaws closing toward Varric’s head. The bound rope jerks taut between the prisoners, twisting Holt sideways at the last instant and dragging his throat beyond the bite.
Ash’s teeth tear through Holt’s collar and cloak instead. The impact throws Ash off balance, and the swelling primal force leaves his limbs trembling as Varric remains alive beneath him.

Varric
You almost killed me. The northern teams have a signal at dawn, a red cord raised from the quarry ridge. Stop that, and they can be warned.

Eno Phmann
Ash, listen. The failed bite revealed something sewn into his collar.
Eno pulls a narrow strip of waxed cloth from the torn collar. It bears three charcoal marks and a rough line toward the northern approaches, offering a usable route to the watched refuge.

Varric
That is the signal map. Without it, my teams will not know which ridge to use. I can still tell you where they wait.
