The guards force the councilors to their knees in the dirt before the fountain, shackles biting at their wrists as the crowd falls silent around them.

A murmur runs through the square, sharp with shock. Several townsfolk lean forward at once, as if the words themselves have struck the air.

One shackled councilor lifts his head, face draining white, while another bows so low his forehead nearly touches the dirt. The guards hold them down without a word.

From the square’s edge, the city’s attention settles on Eden like a blade finding its mark. The crowd waits for what she does next.

Eden moves before the crowd can breathe. Her halberd flashes once, then again, each strike clean and final, turning the square from accusation into execution.

The first councilor falls sideways into the dirt. The second slumps at the fountain’s base. Guards do not interfere, they only hold the ring tighter as the public stares in stunned silence.

A third and final stroke ends the last councilor where he kneels. The fountain’s water keeps running, bright and indifferent behind the bodies.

No cry rises from the townsfolk, only a hard, brittle stillness. Then, from somewhere in the crowd, someone lowers their head instead of looking away.

At the edge of the square, a guard captain drops to one knee without being ordered, and the motion ripples through the nearest ranks. Eden’s blow has done more than kill the council, it has sealed the loyalists’ grip on the square.

Eden straightens in the fountain mist, blood on her halberd and dust at her boots, and lets the square see she does not bend. The silence holds around her like a vow.

Then she turns her head toward the raised dais where her parents stand, reading the line of their faces through the crowd and guard spears.

Queen Araneidan steps down from the dais, not hurried, and stops before Eden with the crowd still frozen behind them. Her gaze moves once over the dead councilors, once over Eden, and lingers there.

King Nazareth's hand lowers in a sharp signal, and the nearest guards sink lower to one knee. For the first time, the town sees not just execution, but a throne answering to it.
