The trailer settles around Bluze and Mara, its metal walls ticking softly as they cool. Dust drifts through a narrow shaft of gray light.

Mara shifts aside from the service hatch, leaving a wide patch of floor clear for Bluze's massive frame. She sets a dented canteen between them.

Mara

Mara

You can stay near the hatch. I won't block it. I know what it means to need an exit.

She rubs at a dark smear of coolant on her sleeve, studying the worn machinery instead of staring at Bluze.

Mara

Mara

I used to keep engines alive. Trucks, generators, anything with a belt left to turn. It was useful, until useful people started getting claimed by whoever had fuel.

Mara

Mara

You don't have to trust me today. Just let me learn the shape of this shelter, and let me make it worth sharing.

You were quick to trust a monster like me, who could easily devour you if he wanted. You are either the bravest human in the wastes or the most foolish.

Bluze

You trusted a monster quickly. I could have devoured you. Are you brave, or simply foolish?

Mara studies Bluze in the dim light, then glances toward the dry service hatch, measuring the answer she can afford to give.

Mara

Mara

Both, on some days. But mostly, I know the difference between a dangerous person and a person everyone has decided is dangerous.

Mara

Mara

I have watched armed people call themselves civilized while taking everything from the weak. You showed me the choice before you made it. That mattered.

She draws one knee up and rests her forearm across it, no longer keeping her body angled toward the hatch. Outside, the damaged winch gives a faint metallic groan far down the canyon.

Mara

Mara

I am not blind to what you are capable of. I am choosing to believe capability is not the same as intent.

Mara

Mara

So tell me, Bluze. What do you want me to understand about you?

I don't want to hurt people. I just want a safe and quiet place to call home.

Bluze

I do not want to hurt people. I want a safe, quiet place to call home.

The words settle between them. Beyond the trailer wall, the damaged winch groans once, then falls quiet.

Mara

Mara

Then you can stop looking for a place that will accept you and help make this one hold.

Mara reaches for the dented canteen and nudges it across the floor toward Bluze, leaving the choice of distance to him.

Mara

Mara

I cannot promise silence forever. I can promise no cages, no hunting parties, and no pretending you are something smaller than you are.

Mara

Mara

Stay, Bluze. We will make the quiet ourselves.
