Shelter Among the Wrecks

Bluze pushes out of the dust cloud and leaves the buried oasis behind. He reaches a canyon of rusted semis, their trailers tilted across cracked asphalt beneath the gray afternoon sky.

Wind whistles through broken windshields. Hot metal, old oil, and dry stone fill the air. The jagged fragment in his armored hide still stings, but the open road offers room to move.

He threads between overturned cabs and sagging trailers, searching for shelter. Several hulks are hollow, but their roofs have collapsed. One refrigerated trailer remains mostly intact, its rear doors bent open.

Inside, dust lies thick over plastic crates and torn insulation. The trailer is dark, dry, and large enough to conceal Bluze from the road.

Far beyond the wrecks, a faint mechanical buzz rises and fades. It does not approach. Loose grit trickles from the trailer roof as the wind shifts.

Near the back wall, Bluze spots a hand-sized vent with fresh scratches around its frame. Something has used this shelter recently, leaving the question of whether it is empty now.

Determine whether the trailer is occupied

I lift the trailer overhead and shake it around a bit to see if anyone is inside

Hidden Occupant
Hidden Occupant

Bluze gets both arms beneath the refrigerated trailer and lifts. Rust groans as the entire box rises clear of the cracked asphalt.

He shakes it once. Plastic crates slam against the walls, insulation flurries from the seams, and the bent rear doors swing wide.

Mara

Mara

Stop! I am not with the hunters!

The voice comes from beneath the torn insulation near the front wall. A narrow figure crawls into view, shielding their head as the trailer rocks overhead.

Mara

Mara

Put it down slowly, and I will come out. I have water, and no weapon.

The trailer is occupied, and the occupant is exposed but not yet outside. Dust pours through the open rear as the damaged winch cable shifts somewhere beyond the wrecks.

Determine whether the trailer is occupied

I sniff the air around the occupation, discovering she's an unarmed female who hasn't eaten in days

SUCCESS (Terrible Perception, rolled +4)

Bluze lowers his head and draws in the stale air beneath the raised trailer. Dust, rust, and old coolant give way to a clear human scent.

The occupant carries no gunpowder, oil, or metal tang of a hidden blade. Hunger is unmistakable, deep enough to sharpen every breath.

Mara

Mara

You can smell it, can't you? I have not eaten in days. I am unarmed.

Their fear remains, but the raised trailer has revealed a second truth: the occupant has been living here, not baiting a trap.

Mara

Mara

The trailer can hold. Set it down on the flat wreckage, not the cracked asphalt. There is a dry service hatch inside.

That information gives Bluze a safer landing point and a concealed way in. Beyond the wrecks, the damaged winch cable drags another length toward the ceiling crack, scraping louder now.

Step out slowly. Remove your hood.

Bluze lowers the refrigerated trailer onto the flat wreckage. Its weight settles with a deep metallic groan, but the landing holds.

Mara

Mara

All right. I am coming out.

She crawls from beneath the torn insulation, then rises beside the trailer. Her hood comes away, revealing a gaunt woman with windburned cheeks and tired, watchful eyes.

Mara

Mara

My name is Mara. I used to repair refrigeration units for the convoy towns. Now I sleep wherever the machines still keep the dust out.

The service hatch remains concealed inside the trailer, and the wreckage forms a hard-sided shelter around it. The damaged winch cable scrapes faintly across the distant rubble, but the hideout is secure.

Mara

Mara

You could have crushed me. Instead, you listened. Is there room here for both of us, at least until I can repay the water?
