Sanctuary Built From The Silence

The hidden oasis lies beneath a collapsed highway interchange, green water glowing faintly in the cave's reflected daylight. Its silence is broken by the click and scrape of steel.

Across the cavern, three monster hunters drive pitons into the rock and feed heavy cables through scavenged winches. Small shock mines ring the approach, their indicator lights blinking.

The other hunters chuckle beneath patched masks. None of them turns toward Bluze's shadowed position at the cave mouth.

A boot nudges loose gravel. One proximity mine flashes from amber to red, and a sharp warning chirp cuts through the cavern.

Rusk raises a battered rifle and scans the dark. Behind him, the nearest cable winch ratchets tight, pulling the trap line across Bluze's path.

Bluze's fist strikes the cavern wall. The impact booms through the oasis, cracking stone and shaking dust from the collapsed highway above.

Therefore, the anchored rock shelf gives way. A massive slab of rubble shears loose above the hunters.

But the cable line tangles their escape. The falling slab crashes across the worksite, burying Rusk, The Masked Hunter, and The Cable Handler beneath the rubble.

The shock mines blink out under the dust. The battered rifle, wrench, and winch lever vanish beneath broken concrete and stone.

Silence returns in pieces. No hunter moves or answers. The cave entrance remains open, but the damaged winch keeps ratcheting against its trapped cable, straining somewhere beneath the debris.

The buried winch bucks beneath the rubble. Bluze drives his strength into the slab, crushing the trapped worksite and everyone beneath it.

The ratcheting stops. Rusk, The Masked Hunter, and The Cable Handler lie dead beneath the collapsed stone, their hunt ended in the dust.

But the final impact tears loose another shelf from the interchange. It slams down beside Bluze, spraying stone across the oasis.

A jagged fragment punches into Bluze's armored hide. He wrenches free, leaving a dark smear on the rock.

The oasis shudders around him. Water ripples through the dust, and a fresh crack races across the ceiling toward the open cave entrance.

Then the damaged cable slips under the rubble and jerks hard, dragging the fallen winch toward the unstable crack.
