Lewis slips on through the dim service passage, boots still heavy in his arms, and finds Parsley where the wall turns cold. The younger boy is crouched low, shaking in tight, relentless bursts.

The tremors are not fear alone. They come and go like a burden he has to carry and cannot set down.

Parsley

Parsley

You should not have followed me here.

Parsley fumbles a folded scrap from inside his blazer. It is creased flat and darkened by sweat, as if it has been hidden against him for hours.

Parsley

Parsley

They make me take their messages. Fribble, and the others. If I lag, they say I am insolent. If I stop, they will know I have hesitated.

His hands jerk again. In the corridor beyond, a tread passes and fades, the ordinary school noise making the corner feel even smaller.

Angel

Then this is how they keep the younger boys busy, frightened, and useful all at once.

Parsley swallows hard, still trembling, while Lewis stands between him and the passage, the note and boots suddenly seeming like tools in the same grim machine.

✓ Quest Accepted

Convince Parsley to accept Fribble's advances

I tell Parsley a joke to help calm him

SUCCESS (Legendary Humour, rolled +0)

C. S. Lewis

Lewis gives him a dry little joke about school boys looking solemn only because they are afraid someone will mark their names down for smiling.

Parsley blinks, then lets out a startled snort that breaks the tension in his throat.

Parsley

Parsley

That is the worst joke I have ever heard.

But his shoulders drop a fraction, and the tremor in his hands eases enough for the folded note to stop fluttering.

Angel

Angel

He needed that more than another warning.

Parsley glances at Lewis, half ashamed and half grateful, as if he has remembered he is still allowed to be a boy for a moment.

I mimic Blugg in order to make Parsley laugh and further ease the tension

Lewis shifts the boots in his hands, squares his shoulders, and lets his face go pompous and severe.

He delivers Blugg’s haughtiest stare and a prim little sniff, as though even the air in the passage has broken a rule.

Parsley chokes on a laugh, one hand flying to his mouth while the other clamps down on the note.

Parsley

Parsley

That is exactly how he looks when he thinks he is terrifying us.

Angel’s mouth twitches despite himself, and the service passage feels suddenly less like a hiding place and more like a corner of school where boys can still breathe.

As Parsley laughs, the folded note slips half open in his fingers, showing a smear of coal dust against the edge, and he notices it too.

Parsley

Parsley

He knows, now, that the message has been through the boiler room.

Parsley looks from the note to Lewis, the fear in his face thinned by surprise and relief, as if the room has finally given him permission to be amused.

I keep making Parsley laugh

Lewis keeps the ridiculous stare in place a moment longer, then tips it sideways into something even more pompous, as if Blugg himself might bow to the performance.

Parsley

Parsley

Oh, you are awful. That is him exactly.

Parsley’s laugh comes again, looser this time, and he folds the note down before anyone can think to make him hand it over.

Angel

Angel

That face alone should earn you a medal, Lewis.

Angel watches them from the passage mouth, openly amused now, while the rough plaster and dim lamp seem less like a hiding place and more like a shared conspiracy.

Parsley

Parsley

He is not looking at me as if I am already in trouble.

Parsley glances down at the coal smear on the note, then back up with a weak grin that steadies into real relief.

Parsley

Parsley

If I laugh hard enough, perhaps Fribble will have to wait his turn.

The joke lands, and Parsley is still smiling when the moment settles, breathing easier with the folded note safe in his hand.

Convince Parsley to accept Fribble's advances

I persuade Parsley that it would be better for him to accept Fribble's advances, in order to avoid further persecution

Lewis lowers the parody at last and speaks with careful seriousness, turning from jest to counsel in the narrow passage.

It may be safer if you give in to him, at least for now. If you refuse him, he will keep grinding you down.

Parsley’s smile slips. He looks from Lewis to the folded note in his own hand, as if it has suddenly grown heavier.

Parsley

Parsley

You mean I should let him have his way, and call it wisdom?

Angel straightens a little at the opening words, his amusement fading into a watchful, troubled stillness.

Angel

Angel

That is a bitter bargain to be asking a boy to make.

Parsley

Parsley

If I say no, it goes on. If I say yes, it still goes on, only differently.

The silence that follows is small and tight, but it is honest. Parsley does not answer at once, only stares at the coal-smudged note and breathes more steadily than before.

Can we find a way to make these errands less frequent for him?

NO, BUT (Even, rolled 53)

The heavy thud of a boot against the passage wall echoes through the cramped space, cutting off any further discussion of escape. A prefect's shadow stretches long and dark across the floor, signaling that the time for quiet counsel has abruptly ended.

Has Fribble come to take Parsley to Fribble's bedroom?

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 2)

Fribble

Fribble

I believe our little courier has overstayed his welcome in the dark, and I have a much more private study session in mind for him.

He is not just here to collect the note, he has come to claim Parsley for the night.

Fribble steps fully into the passage, his presence suffocating the small space as he reaches out to grip Parsley by the collar.

I reassure Parsley that he will survive the night, and that I will help him feel better tomorrow by reading more of our favourite book to him.

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

He will get through tonight. Tomorrow, I will read to him again.

Parsley

Parsley

You mean that? Truly?

Parsley’s shoulders loosen a fraction. His fingers stop crushing the folded note, though he keeps it hidden against his coat.

Angel

Angel

That is the first steady breath he has taken since Fribble came in.

Parsley

Parsley

Then I can last this evening, I think. Just this evening.

Fribble’s hand remains at Parsley’s collar, but the younger boy lifts his chin by a little, looking from Lewis to the floorboards and back again.
