Lewis steps into the common room with Blugg’s boots in hand. The room is oddly still, the usual bluster held at bay by the hush of late afternoon.

At the far side, a neatly dressed boy sits with an easy posture, as if the school’s roughness has not quite reached him. He looks up and takes in Lewis’s dusty uniform and cramped expression.

Angel

Angel

You seem to have had a troublesome afternoon.

Lewis comes to a stop near the hearth, the boots dangling awkwardly at his side. Angel’s gaze is brief, but not mocking, more curious than anything else.

Angel

Angel

Are those meant for the prefect, or have you taken them for your own use?

The silence of the room makes the question feel unusually clear. Outside the common room, the school keeps moving, but here the moment lingers, waiting for Lewis to answer or ignore it.

Speak calmly with Angel

I offer a weary smile and explain that these boots belong to Blugg.

A tired smile flickers across Lewis's face as he says the boots are Blugg's.

Angel's brows lift a fraction, and his attention sharpens. 'Then I should not envy the owner. He seems to keep others busy on his behalf.'

Lewis's answer lands cleanly. The words cost him little, and the room does not punish him for saying them.

Angel

Angel

'You have the look of a boy carrying three errands at once,' Angel says, his tone almost amused. 'Put them there a moment. You may breathe.'

Angel gestures toward the chair beside him, and the invitation hangs there, plain and unexpected.

Angel

Angel

'If Blugg trusts you with his boots, he may be less clever than he thinks,' Angel adds softly. 'What sort of business has he sent you on?'

Speak calmly with Angel

I explain to Angel that Bugg has sent me to return his boots to his study, and also to take a note to the kitchens for him.

Blugg has sent me to take his boots back to his study, and to carry a note to the kitchens for him.

Lewis keeps his voice low. The boots tug at his fingers, and the folded note crinkles once against the leather as he shifts his grip.

Angel

Angel

Boots to the study, a note to the kitchens. That is a brisk sort of favor to lay on one boy.

Angel

Angel

He is being used, and carefully enough to stay useful.

Angel tilts his head, studying the boots, then Lewis's face, as if matching the errands to the boy carrying them.

Angel

Angel

You have done well to bring them straight. Sit a moment, if you can spare it.

Lewis's hand tightens on the note, and a faint crease runs across the paper before he can smooth it flat again.

Angel

Angel

If you are to be marched about the house all evening, you may as well tell me who is marching you.

I sit and speak quietly with Angel

Lewis lowers himself into the offered chair, careful with the boots and the creased note. The leather settles with a soft thud against his knees, and he keeps his shoulders small in the firelight.

Angel

Angel

That is better. You look less like a boy under command and more like one merely cornered by it.

Angel shifts back, giving him room without looking away, while the common room hums quietly around them in the background.

The chair is warm.

Angel

Angel

Blugg must think you useful, to keep you so busy. Or troublesome, which is sometimes the same thing here.

Lewis’s grip loosens a fraction, then tightens again when the note slips against his fingers and makes another sharp crease.

Angel

Angel

If you wish, you may tell me only the part that is safe to say.

From the room beyond, a passing Blood pauses at the doorway, hears the low voices, and lingers long enough to make the air feel watched. Angel’s smile stays in place, but his eyes flick that way once.

I lean forward, keeping my voice low, and ask Angel what he truly sees in my predicament.

What do you truly make of my situation?

Lewis leans forward in the chair, careful not to jostle the boots, and keeps his voice low. The folded note scrapes softly under his thumb, another crease pressed into it.

Angel

Angel

You are being used, plainly. Not broken yet, though they mean to make a habit of trying.

Angel's smile thins at the edges as he studies Lewis, more thoughtful now than amused. The warmth from the hearth catches on the brass in his cuff, and he tilts his head as if weighing the whole school behind the boy.

Angel

Angel

What strikes me is not the boots. It is that you carry them as if it is safer to be useful than noticed.

He sees that much, at least.

A passing Blood lingers in the doorway a moment longer, then moves on. Angel notices the pause, but does not look away from Lewis.

Angel

Angel

If you wish to speak plain, I am listening. If not, I can still keep quiet with you.

Learn what Lewis's situation looks like to Angel

I tell Angel the entire details of Blugg's errands, and all about Fribble's persecution of Parsley because of Parsley's rejection of Fribble's sexual advances.

Blugg sent me for his boots and a note to the kitchen. Fribble is worse, though. He keeps after Parsley because Parsley refused him.

The words come out in a low, careful stream. Lewis keeps his eyes on Angel as he names the errands, the kitchen, and the boots, then lets the rest of it hang there, plain and ugly.

Angel

Angel

So that is the shape of it, errands as leash, silence as payment.

Angel

Angel

Then the boy is not merely inconvenienced. He is trapped by design, and Parsley by spite.

Angel's expression hardens into something thoughtful and protective. He reaches for the creased note, not to take it, but to glance at the fold marks as if the paper itself can confirm the bargain.

Angel

Angel

You were right to speak of it. Some things grow meaner in the telling, but they are smaller once spoken aloud.

Lewis's shoulders ease a fraction, though the boots still weigh his lap. The common room stays quiet around them, warm with firelight and far from any prefect's ear.

Angel

Angel

Tell me one thing more, if you can. Is Parsley safe this hour?

I will set these heavy boots aside and hurry back to the boiler room to find him.

Lewis shifts the boots off his knees and sets them on the floor with a dull thud. The creased note stays trapped in his fingers for half a breath, then he straightens, already turning toward the doorway.

He reaches the threshold in two quick steps, but the load on his arm and the stiffness in his legs make the move awkward. His shoulder clips the frame, and the boots skid sideways, loud enough to bite at the room's hush.

Angel does not rise, but his hand comes up at once, palm half-open in a quiet check. His eyes follow Lewis and then the fallen boots, taking in the hurry for what it is.

Angel

Angel

Not that way. If you dash off in that state, you will announce yourself to every passerby.

Lewis catches the boots before they slide far. As his hand closes on the leather, the note flashes against his sleeve, and he sees a dark smear of coal dust on the back of the paper, like it has already touched the boiler side of the house.

Angel

Angel

If you mean to check on Parsley, take the service passage from the stair end. It is less watched.

I ask Angel to help me reach Parsley quietly

Could you tell me the quiet way there, and whether Parsley is safe this hour?

Angel

Angel

Yes. Use the service passage by the stair end, then turn back along the wall. If Parsley is where you left him, he should not be watched just now.

Angel tips his head toward the darker side of the room, making the route with two calm fingers. The common room stays still around them, but the doorway seems less like a trap than a choice.

Angel

Angel

I will not send you into a bad corridor blind. If you like, I can keep my seat and watch the door while you go.

Lewis takes the hint, and the boy's careful attention turns the errand into something almost orderly. The boots remain in his grip, but the note no longer feels quite so loud against his sleeve.

Angel

Angel

Parsley is shaking too much for more trouble tonight. Better Lewis reaches him cleanly and quickly.
