The door to Fribble’s room stands ajar, and the neat little study Lewis expects is wrong at once. Books lie flung across the floor, drawers gape open, and coal dust hangs in the air like a dirty confession.

Parsley freezes on the threshold, still clutching his note. Fribble is already inside, leaning over the desk as if he owns the room, and the old coal stain on the paper suddenly looks deliberate.

Fribble

Fribble

You have been hiding things in the boiler room. I have already been there.

In one quick motion, Fribble snatches the note from Parsley’s hand. He turns it, taps the coal mark with one finger, and smiles as though the matter is settled.

Fribble

Fribble

That is not dirt. That is evidence. I know exactly what you boys have been keeping from me.

Parsley’s face drains white. Lewis sees it clearly now, the older boy has not guessed, he has already searched the cache and returned with his prey. The room feels smaller with every breath.

Fribble

Fribble

Come in, then. You may stand there looking frightened, or you may begin explaining yourselves. Choose quickly.

I will do whatever work you want, if you leave the cache alone.

The words land quietly in the cramped room. Parsley turns his head toward Lewis at once, startled by the offer, while Fribble’s smile thins into something more practical.

Fribble

Fribble

A sensible tone at last. You do understand how this works.

Fribble

Fribble

You will run errands, fetch what I send for, and keep your mouth shut. In return, I leave the books where they are.

Parsley draws a shaky breath, still pale, but his shoulders loosen by a fraction. His hand drifts to the place where the note was, as if checking that his own fear is still real.

Parsley

Parsley

You mean you will not go back there tonight?

Fribble

Fribble

Not if both of you prove cooperative. The choice is yours.

For the first time, the room stops feeling like a trap with only one exit. Fribble keeps the stolen note, but the worst of the secret sits intact somewhere beyond his reach.

Lewis gives the smallest nod the room will allow, and Fribble takes it as payment already made. Parsley watches the exchange with a tight, stunned face, while the scattered books on the floor lie open like evidence.

Fribble

Fribble

Good. Then we are understood.

Fribble slips the note into his pocket and reaches down to gather one of the seized books with two fingers, as if deciding what is worth keeping. The motion is careful, almost lazy, but it leaves no doubt who holds the power.

Parsley

Parsley

He has it now. All of it.

Lewis’s answer costs him at once. Fribble points to the mess on the carpet and names the first errand before either boy can protest, making the bargain feel immediate and practical.

Fribble

Fribble

You will begin by putting this room to rights. Then you will wait for my next instruction.

Parsley bends and starts gathering a stray page, then pauses, his hand empty at last. The hidden cache is not found tonight, but the note is gone, and Fribble now knows exactly how to keep them obedient.
