The suspended darkness dilates above the stone dais, revealing a pulsing knot of black tissue where the shadow-veins converge. Buried bells toll faster, shedding dust from the cavern walls.

Maurice plants himself between Celia and pale dead shapes rising from the cavern floor. His massive frame blocks the nearest approach, weapon held ready beneath the falling grit.

One vein enters the mouth. Follow it, hunter, and the root will remember every living name it has consumed.

The voices fade into the bell thunder. Among the converging veins, one narrow strand brightens with a sickly violet pulse, winding from the dais toward a fissure behind the cavern.

There is your road, Graves. I will keep these dead at bay, but whatever guards that vein will not wait politely.

The pale shapes haul themselves higher, faceless and dust-coated, their fingers scraping furrows in the stone. None crosses Maurice's reach, yet more silhouettes gather beyond them.

Celia raises her staff toward the nearest dead. Pale fire pours from its head, sweeping across the cavern floor in a widening ring.

The spell touches the dust-coated shapes, and their bodies collapse into clean ash. The farther silhouettes falter, then vanish beneath the same deathly radiance.

Well cast, Graves. The road is clear.

Maurice advances behind her as the last ashes settle. The buried bells shudder overhead, but no dead remain between Celia and the sickly violet vein.

Celia crosses the exposed stone toward the fissure. The plague vein hangs within reach, pulsing like a diseased root through the cracked cavern wall.

The hunter reaches the living road. Touch it, and every stolen name will answer.

Celia reaches the vein. Violet light crawls across her staff and palm while the suspended mouth contracts above the dais, suddenly aware of her grasp.

“I order Maurice to guard my back”

Maurice, guard my back.

Aye, Graves. Nothing reaches you while I stand.

Maurice turns from the fissure and plants himself behind Celia, broad shoulders squared toward the cavern. His weapon sweeps a watchful arc through the dust and shadow.

The violet vein pulses against Celia's staff and palm. Behind her, Maurice's boots grind into the stone as he claims the narrow approach.

The executioner guards the hunter. Two living names now face the remembering mouth.

The suspended darkness contracts again, but Maurice does not yield ground. The cavern's tolling settles into a slower rhythm as Celia stands protected at the vein.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the root's blind side

“Is the suspended mouth drawing power elsewhere?”

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 72)

The violet vein throbs beneath Celia's staff, but no answering pulse travels through the cavern. The suspended mouth gains nothing from any distant source.

Instead, the vein dims at the fissure and reveals a second channel beneath the stone, narrow and sealed by overlapping black runes.

No hidden well feeds the mouth. Its hunger is gathered here, yet the root has another road.

The runes briefly part under the violet glow, exposing a sloping passage beyond the fissure. Its walls bear fresh pale marks, unlike the ancient carvings below.

Maurice Headsman

There is your consolation, Graves. We cannot starve the mouth from afar, but that passage may lead behind its defenses.

Behind Maurice, the dead shapes remain scattered ash, and the slower bells keep their measure. The cavern offers no new attack, only the newly visible route.

Choose the lesser road, hunter. It reaches the root's blind side, where the remembering mouth cannot watch.

“I study the fresh pale marks for a safe route behind the mouth.”

Celia lowers her staff over the fresh pale marks. Their strokes are recent, pressed into the stone by a living hand, and unlike the ancient veins, they avoid every bell-shadow.

She traces their sequence through the fissure's edge and reads a concealed map: the sloping passage bends behind the suspended mouth, then rises to a narrow overlook above its pulsing knot.

The final mark opens beneath her touch. Black runes peel away without resistance, exposing a dry stair descending behind the dais. No ward, dead thing, or collapsing stone blocks the route.

Maurice Headsman

You found the safe road, Graves. Better still, it puts us above the thing's heart.

A second advantage emerges from the marks: three pale symbols identify a severing point where the vein can be cut without disturbing the cavern's supporting stone.

The blind side is given. The root cannot watch the hand that severs it.

Maurice shifts toward the opened stair, keeping his weapon trained on the mouth. The buried bells falter for one breath, as though the hidden route has escaped their notice.

Celia descends behind the dais along the dry stair. The suspended mouth hangs above and behind her, its pulsing knot hidden from the route marked by the living hand.

The stair curves around the cavern wall and ends at a narrow ledge overlooking the converging veins. Three pale symbols glow together in the stone beneath her feet.

I have the stair, Graves. Take the severing point while the mouth still searches the other road.

Maurice holds position above, weapon ready, while Celia follows the symbols along the ledge. The marked point lies where one shadow-vein enters the pulsing knot.

At the ledge's end, a shallow groove crosses the stone beneath the vein. Its edges are clean and deliberate, shaped for the sanctified staff.

The blind side receives the hunter. Here, the root may be severed without bringing the cavern down.

The severing point waits directly before Celia, exposed and quiet beneath the dim violet glow. The vein pulses once above it, then falls still.

Celia drives the sanctified staff into the prepared groove. The stone accepts it with a deep crack, and white fire races along the severing point.

The shadow-vein convulses above her. Violet radiance tears through its length, then gutters as the staff's divine light cuts the channel cleanly.

The pulsing knot within the suspended mouth contracts sharply. Its darkness loses shape, folding inward while severed strands wither against the cavern wall.

Far below, buried bells fall silent one after another. Dust settles from the ceiling, and the ledge remains firm beneath Celia's boots.

The road is severed. The first mouth cannot gather what this root once carried.

Above the dais, Maurice lowers his weapon but keeps watch. The cavern's remaining veins pulse weakly, revealing a dark fracture beneath the collapsing knot.

You cut its reach, Graves. Now show me whether that wound leads to the heart.
