The Residue Points East

The gatehouse sickroom settles into cautious recovery. All three villagers sleep without fever, their breathing quiet beneath clean blankets while morning light reaches through the shutters.

Celia, will you examine what the sigils left behind? The gold residue is fading, but it still answers when I touch it.

A faint golden dust clings to the lampglass, arranged in branching strokes around the vanished ash marks. It glimmers whenever Elianor’s hand passes nearby.

At the doorway, Maurice checks wrapped provisions and spare bandages while Tomas fills waterskins, preparing the eastern journey toward the direction marked by the residue.

We can leave after the healer confirms they will hold. Lord Vale’s people can guard the road behind us.

One of them woke before dawn. He whispered a name none of us knows, then slept again. The residue appeared on the lampglass afterward.

The name may be a person, a place, or something listening from the east. I have packed enough for a hard road.

✓ Quest Accepted

Determine what is listening from the east

“Can I trace the residue’s direction without disturbing it?”

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 48)

The Residue Points East

The golden dust on the lampglass draws itself into a single branching line, pointing east without scattering or dimming. The vanished ash marks remain undisturbed.

The line crosses the glass toward the shutters, then bends sharply southeast, forming three faint turns before ending at a small hooked symbol.

It answers without being touched. The residue is showing a route, not merely remembering the curse.

Three turns and a hooked mark. I can copy it onto the road chart before the light changes.

Maurice sets the provisions aside and studies the glowing strokes. Beyond the shutters, the eastern road disappears among low hills and black, leafless trees.

Then the trail begins here and bends toward the old quarry road. We follow it before whoever left the sigils can alter the path.

Elianor Vale

The gold still responds to me, but it does not draw the route. It is waiting for Celia to decide what the sign means.

“I interpret the hooked symbol with Elianor”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

Elianor lifts the lampglass from its hook and carries it to the sickroom table. Celia brings the golden residue into the morning light without disturbing its branching line.

Together they compare the hooked symbol with the faint directional strokes. Elianor’s touch brightens the gold, while Celia’s plague-sight reveals the mark’s meaning beneath its surface.

The hook marks a boundary, and the three turns identify an approach rather than a destination.

The symbol resolves into an old quarry sign, altered by the curse: the route bends southeast from the quarry road toward a sealed way beneath the hills.

Elianor Vale

Elianor Vale

It is not calling us to the quarry itself. The hook points beyond it, where the road ends and something buried begins.

Then the quarry road is our first mark. I will have the horses and provisions ready before noon.

As Elianor lowers the lampglass, the golden line fades, leaving the hooked symbol clear on the glass. Eastward, the black trees wait beyond the manor road.
