By afternoon, Celia, Maurice, Elianor, and Tomas follow the quarry road southeast. The manor and its recovering villagers remain behind under the healer’s watch.
The route bends past a roofless roadside shrine. A cracked bronze bell hangs above a threshold darkened like old blood, though no bell-rope stirs.
A wounded middle-aged man crawls from the scrub, wearing a stained gray bell-keeper’s cloak. His ash-brown hair clings to a hollow-cheeked face, and one hand grips a torn ledger strip.

Brother Caldus
Brother Caldus. Do not cross that threshold. The quarry ledger marked this place, then the buried thing marked me.
He extends the ledger strip. Its hooked symbol matches the lampglass sign, but fresh dark strokes surround it like fingers closing around a road.

Brother Caldus
It is beneath the shrine. It listens for names, for footsteps, for the bell’s return.
Something below answers with a slow knock. Dust slips from the roofless stones, and the bronze bell swings once without making a sound.
“I bind Brother Caldus’s wounds and ask what marked him.”

Celia Graves
What marked you? Hold still.
Celia kneels in the scrub and binds Brother Brother Caldus’s wounded side with clean cloth and firm, practiced pressure. The bleeding slows beneath her hands, and her undead sense finds no corruption in the flesh.

Brother Caldus
The ledger marked me first. I copied its hooked sign beneath the shrine, and the ink turned cold.
Brother Caldus pulls aside his torn cloak. A black, finger-shaped stain circles his ribs without breaking the skin, its edges fading where Celia’s binding rests.

Brother Caldus
Then the bell moved without sound. Something below spoke my name, though I had never spoken it there. The mark seized me when I tried to flee.
Celia’s sight follows the stain inward and finds a severed thread of dead will, anchored to the shrine’s threshold rather than Brother Caldus’s body.

Brother Caldus
It wanted the road remembered. The quarry ledger is not a record. It is a map of names leading beneath this shrine.
“I use my undead sensing to examine the shrine and bell”
SUCCESS (Legendary Undead Sensing, rolled +2)

Celia turns her undead sensing upon the roofless shrine and its silent bronze bell. The world of living warmth recedes, replaced by layered traces of old death.
The bell is hollow and empty of spirits, but its metal carries a dormant command. The command is bound to the threshold, not to the hanging clapper or rope.
Beneath the shrine, Celia perceives a buried passage and a circle of names carved into stone. The dark will below touches those names, then reaches upward through the threshold.
The mark around Brother Caldus’s ribs appears as a severed filament, already detached from his flesh. It leads back to the threshold and ends there, unable to claim him.

Brother Caldus
You see it, then. The bell is only the mouth’s tongue. The names beneath it are the road.
Celia’s sensing follows the buried pattern farther eastward. The listening presence is not inside the shrine, but below it, using the marked names to orient itself toward the sealed way beneath the hills.

Brother Caldus
If the names are broken or cleansed, the shrine cannot carry the call. But the map still points to what waits below.
