The Seam Beneath the Altar

The reliquary lid lifts another finger's breadth. Beside the altar, the tower master's corpse exhales a flood of black dust, though the dead man does not rise.

His slack jaw hangs open as voices pour through the ruined throat, layered and distant, naming villages, roads, and survivors Celia has never heard mentioned.

The words overlap beneath the chamber, some pleading, some counting. Violet light leaks through the reliquary's widening crack and stains the dust like bruised moonlight.

Every shadow in the chamber bends away from the altar, narrowing into long black fingers that point toward a seam hidden beneath its stone foundation.

Above, Maurice Headsman remains beyond the tower with the rescued lord's daughter, guarding her path to the village road. No answer comes from the stair.

The names are not lost. The living carry them downward. The first mouth remembers every door.

A grinding sound answers from below. Dust trickles from the concealed seam, and a narrow line of darkness opens beneath the altar, waiting.

“I drive my sanctified staff into the seam beneath the altar.”

SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +1)

The Seam Beneath the Altar

Celia drives the sanctified staff into the hidden seam beneath the altar. The holy head bites through stone, and white fire floods the narrow darkness.

The altar splits around the staff with a thunderous crack. Its black foundation collapses inward, revealing a steep shaft descending beneath the village.

The first mouth is opened by death's hand. The living road ends below.

Violet radiance pours from the reliquary into the shaft, illuminating buried foundations, rootlike veins of shadow, and countless pale marks carved into the earth.

The reliquary lid falls aside and shatters. Within rests no corpse, but a vast circular darkness that turns slowly beneath the broken altar.

Every name descends. Every survivor feeds the remembering mouth.

The staff remains lodged in the split stone, its white fire holding the opening clear. Cold air rises from below, carrying the distant toll of another bell.

Maurice, make sure the girl is safe, then get your ass down here!

Her command rolls up the shaft and through the broken tower. Above, heavy boots turn sharply toward the descending stair.

Maurice Headsman

She is beyond the gate and under my protection. Hold fast, Graves. I am coming down.

The rescued lord's daughter calls a hurried assurance from the road, and Maurice enters the tower alone. His broad frame descends through dust and violet light, weapon ready.

Maurice Headsman

Maurice Headsman

The girl is safe. Whatever waits below, it will face both of us.

Maurice reaches the chamber and plants himself beside Celia. The open shaft breathes upward, stirring his coat, while the pale marks below begin glowing one after another.

Two living names descend together. The mouth remembers the weight of executioners.

“I order Maurice to hold while I study the marks”

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +1)

Celia Graves

Celia Graves

Maurice, hold here while I study these marks.

Maurice Headsman

As you command, Graves. I will not take another step.

Maurice braces beside the shaft, weapon lowered but ready. Celia kneels at the rim, examining each pale mark as violet light passes through it.

The marks are not names. They are directions, all pointing beneath the village.

Her trained eye separates the carvings into three concentric paths. The outer ring records buried foundations, the middle traces the shadow-veins, and the innermost marks form a ward.

The ward is damaged but deliberate. It does not imprison the darkness below; it channels the plague upward through every marked dwelling and road.

The hunter reads the road. The road reads her. Descend, and the first mouth will show its root.

Celia raises one hand over Maurice's broad shoulder and invokes the death god's bargain. A pale seal settles beneath his skin, cold as grave marble, then fades from sight.

Maurice Headsman

That feels like a promise carved into bone. I will spend it carefully, Graves.

The warded marks answer the spell with a low chime. Their inner ring parts, revealing worn steps descending through the shaft's violet gloom.

Celia lifts her staff from the broken altar and enters first. Maurice follows close behind, one hand skimming the stone while the other keeps his weapon ready.

Celia Graves

The protection is holding. The shaft was made for passage, not burial.

They descend beneath the village. Rootlike shadow-veins pulse in the walls, crossing old foundation stones and carrying muffled whispers toward the darkness below.

Maurice Headsman

Maurice Headsman

There. The marks converge ahead. Whatever the first mouth is, Graves, we are walking straight toward its root.

“I use my undead sensing to guide me to the root of the plague”

SUCCESS (Superb Undead Sensing, rolled -2)

The Seam Beneath the Altar

Celia lets her undead sensing spread through the shaft. The violet marks blur, replaced by a cold map of every cursed trace converging beneath the village.

The current pulls her past the carved steps into a low foundation tunnel. Shadow-veins throb in the walls, each pulse leading toward one buried chamber.

Celia Graves

Celia Graves

The root is directly below the old village well.

The sensing exacts its price. Blood slips from Celia's nose, and the divine seal beneath Maurice's skin flares painfully as the plague notices her intrusion.

Maurice Headsman

Maurice Headsman

Your face is bleeding, Graves. Tell me where to put my weapon.

Celia follows the death-cold pull through a collapsed arch. Beyond it lies the root: a stone-lined well turned upside down, its darkness descending into a chamber beneath the village.

Maurice Headsman

Maurice Headsman

Then that is where we go. I will keep anything dead from reaching you while you find its heart.

“I descend into the chamber beneath the well”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Celia descends into the inverted well, boots striking damp stone steps. Violet light fades above her, replaced by a dim, pulsing glow from the chamber below.

The descent ends in a circular chamber beneath the village. Shadow-veins converge upon a cracked stone basin, where black water turns without wind.

Her shoulder scrapes the narrow stair as the walls shift inward with a grinding sigh. The abrasion tears her sleeve and leaves a thin line of blood.

Maurice Headsman

Maurice Headsman

You have reached the root, Graves. I am behind you, and the passage remains open.

Maurice enters the chamber, ducking beneath the low arch. His weapon rises as pale shapes stir beneath the basin's black surface, their outlines pressed against the stone.

the voices beneath the village

The hunter enters the remembering chamber. Blood opens the path, and the root now knows her name.

The basin splits with a soft crack. Beneath it, a stair spirals into deeper darkness, while the shadow-veins tighten around the opening like roots gripping stone.

“I descend the deeper stair toward the first mouth”

FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -3)

Celia steps onto the deeper stair, staff scraping the wall as she descends toward the pulsing darkness. The first step holds; the second sinks beneath her weight.

Stone folds inward with a violent grind. The spiral twists sideways, dropping Celia onto a narrow ledge above the black basin while the lower stair seals behind her.

Celia Graves

Celia Graves

The stair is changing its direction, not collapsing.

Maurice Headsman

Maurice Headsman

Graves! The way behind us is shut. Give me your hand, and I will pull you clear.

Maurice reaches across the broken rim, but the basin's black water rises in a silent column between them. Pale faces press through its surface, blocking his grasp.

the voices beneath the village

The hunter may descend only by surrendering the road. Turn from the mouth, or become its direction.

Celia's ledge fractures beneath her boots. It does not open toward the sealed stair, but toward a low side passage where shadow-veins pulse around a door of old foundation stones.

“I descend the deeper stair toward the first mouth”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Celia steps through the pulsing side passage. The foundation-stone door yields around her, opening onto a descending stair carved through black rock.

The shadow-veins withdraw from her path as she descends. Each step carries her beneath the village, past buried wells, roots, and fragments of older walls.

Maurice Headsman

Maurice Headsman

The passage opened for you, Graves. I am coming behind, but the basin cannot follow us here.

Maurice crosses the threshold and follows, his broad silhouette filling the passage. Above, the black water settles, cut off by the closing stone door.

The stair ends in a vast cavern beneath the village. At its center hangs the first mouth, a circular darkness suspended among converging shadow-veins.

the voices beneath the village

the voices beneath the village

The hunter has descended. The root is exposed. The first mouth remembers the hand that opened its road.

Cold radiance outlines a stone dais beneath the darkness. Every vein leads toward it, and the cavern's buried bells begin tolling in answer to Celia's arrival.
