The three knocks come again, harder. Rubble shivers across the sunken foundation, and a thin black line appears between stones beneath the old storehouse.

Form a half-circle. Keep the villagers behind us, and do not let that crack reach open ground.

Orren Vey points toward the village lane, where shuttered homes and the manor’s distant watchfires mark the threatened foundations. Elianor Vale and Tomas Rusk move to rouse the nearest households.

No panic. Take the children and the sick toward the shrine. Stay together, and follow the golden light.

Celia’s sanctified staff pales over the foundation. Beneath the stones, a buried channel pulses toward the village, carrying a dim echo of the eastern corruption.

Brother Caldus

Brother Caldus

It is not the source. It is an old receiving branch, trying to reopen through the storehouse floor. Seal it before the pulse finds breath.

The black line widens by a finger’s breadth. Cold mist curls from the crack as Maurice Headsman plants himself before it, while Brother Caldus begins marking a ward around the fallen stones.

“I use my undead destruction magic to disrupt the pulse long enough for Caldus to finish his ward.”

Celia raises the sanctified staff toward the fissure. Pale force pours into the black pulse, stripping its deathly rhythm from the buried channel and forcing it into silence.

The crack shudders without widening. Cold mist collapses inward as the pulse loses its hold, leaving only ordinary dust between the fallen stones.

Hold it there. The ward is taking shape.

Brother Caldus completes the circle, pressing his marked palm against the final stone. The ward flares softly, sealing the receiving branch beneath the storehouse.

Finished. This branch will not answer the eastern corruption again.

The village foundations settle. Across the lane, shuttered doors open as Elianor and Tomas guide the households back from the shrine, while Maurice lowers his weapon.

Then the danger here is ended. We return to the manor and tell them the dead will stay buried.

The last black shimmer faded beneath the storehouse. Dust settled over the completed ward, and the village drew its first untroubled breath.

It is sealed. Not cleansed, perhaps, but held beyond any hand that would wake it.

Then the danger here is ended. The manor can spare us no longer.

The households are safe, and the afflicted have shelter. That is enough for tonight.

Enough to save them. Enough to remember what saving them cost.

Under allied protection, the village began the slow work of recovery. The survivors were guarded and treated, while the sealed branch beneath the storehouse became a burden of stone, warding, and memory. Celia Graves left the eastern mystery untouched, but not its human cost, and the chapter ended with the village alive beneath a quieter sky.
