Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

Isaru erupts through the broken ceiling into open air, the chamber below shrinking into a bright wound in the stone. Snow-cold wind strikes his scales, and the jagged crown of Heavens Pillar looms close enough to touch.

The Exiled Lord stumbles up through the rupture after him, thrown to one knee on a ledge of black rock. Below, the fortress depths glow with the oath-stone's light, and the mountain groans around them.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

By the high peak... it opens to the sky.

The storm gathers above the spire, not circling now, but pouring toward the broken summit like a tide finding a gap in stone. Thin lightning crawls across the cloud belly and answers the old runes with a pale shimmer.

Isaru

Isaru

The threshold is tied to the mountain above as well as the stone below.

The Oath-Stone

The Oath-Stone

Old air. Old height. The lock remembers.

The ledge narrows toward a natural arch of ice-veined granite, and beyond it the outer face of Heavens Pillar falls away into a white abyss. The seal's light follows Isaru here, tracing the cliff in moving lines like a path waiting to be chosen.

"This place is my home after all." The path this lord is on is one I am familiar with. I am simply the observer and keeper.

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak
Isaru

Isaru

This place is my home after all. The path you walk is one I know.

Isaru

Isaru

I am only the observer, and the keeper.

Harness the storms power to reinforce the seal.

SUCCESS (Mediocre Storm Manipulation, rolled +1)

Isaru lowers his claws to the rune-lines and draws breath through his teeth. The storm answers, not as chaos, but as a thread he can seize and turn.

Lightning-laced wind gathers around the carved channels, then sinks into them. The glowing script brightens and steadies, locking into a deeper, more even pulse.

A clean ring of pressure spreads across the ledge. The oath-stone's light stops flickering, and the crackle in the cliffside quiets into a held tension.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

It takes the storm, not my strength... so this is what he sees in it.

The runes answer in one clear reveal, a second layer surfacing beneath the first. The older vow is not waking, it is being reinforced, tied tighter to the mountain's own weather.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

You did more than steady it. The seal remembers your touch.

Above them, the storm bends away from the peak by a narrow margin, as if the mountain has exhaled. The lord looks from the brightened lines to Isaru, waiting for what he makes of that.

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

"You seek a power beyond man. Your lens is not wide enough, yet, what do you see on this stone which is older than I am?"

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

Isaru lets the question hang in the thin air. The rune-light paints his claws and the cliff in pale gold.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

He sees it as a lattice, not a lock. That matters.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

I see an older vow holding a newer one in place. Not a prison, exactly. More like a pledge that learned to cling to stone.

He draws a careful breath and lowers his hand from the glow, as if speaking too loudly might bruise the secret.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

The mountain does not just contain the seal. It listens to it. When the storm stirs, the vow tightens.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

And when I first heard that, I thought I was chasing a failure. Now I think I was hearing a warning passed down by something older than either of us.

The oath-stone’s pulse holds steady, and the calm around the ledge settles into a narrow, watchful stillness.

"The old magics are not something to be taken lightly. At least you recognize the danger. Many others have come and died to glimpse beyond this world."

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

Isaru answers with a low, even warning, carrying it straight into the open air. The words do not echo, they settle.

Isaru

Isaru

The old magics are not to be taken lightly. You recognize the danger. Many have come and died to glimpse beyond this world.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Died to glimpse it... yes. That is the shape of it. Not hunger, then. Warning.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

I do. I have stood too close to wonders that devour the careless. That is why I listened instead of reaching.

He lets the glowing runes reflect in his eyes, then turns his palm upward as if weighing the confession there.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

My exile began with that mistake, or with refusing to pretend it was not one. I wanted the truth beneath the oath. I learned the truth also bites.

The oath-stone keeps its steady pulse, and for a moment the ledge feels less like a cliff than a shared vigil.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Tell me, Isaru, when ancient power answers your touch, do you trust it, or only test it?

I offer no help in the question, though give a slight nod, to hint that he is on the right track, but this is something I can't answer for him.

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Isaru answers with a small, measured dip of his head. No words follow, only a careful acknowledgement held in his stillness.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Not trust, then. Not dismissal either. He marks the edge and leaves it there.

The lord’s shoulders loosen a fraction. The runes along the stone keep their calm rhythm, and the quiet between them feels less like emptiness now, more like a shared measure.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

That is answer enough. You do not flatter the unknown, and you do not strike at it blindly.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

I was taught that wisdom and cowardice can wear the same mask. I still do not know which one I wore when I was exiled.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

But I know this, the mountain did not turn me away for asking. It turned me away for wanting proof before patience.

He glances to the glowing cliffside, then back to Isaru, the confession plain in his posture.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Tell me honestly, guardian, when you look at me now, do you see a man still in error, or one finally learning how to stand near truth?

"You have caution, yet your age betrays you. Your resolve is not yet strong enough from what I have seen so far."

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Isaru lets the silence hold a moment longer, then speaks with calm weight. The words land like a measured claw against stone, sharp only in their honesty.

Isaru

Isaru

You have caution, yet your age betrays you. From what I have seen, your resolve is not strong enough.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

He absorbs the rebuke without flinching, gaze dropping to the rune-lines as if weighing each word against them.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Then I stand corrected by a clearer eye than my own. I have mistaken endurance for certainty before.

A faint breath leaves him. The hard edge in his posture eases, not into surrender, but into candor.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

My years taught me to fear being wrong more than being slow. Exile has made that fear a habit.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

If my resolve still wavers, then name the fault plainly. I would rather be judged honestly than praised into blindness.

Isaru gives a slight smile. "If you knew you had the power to stop a disaster, could you look the other way?" I don't wait for a reply, instead focusing on the sky and the energy of the storm.

SUCCESS (Mediocre Storm Manipulation, rolled +3)

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

Isaru lets the small smile fade, then lifts his gaze to the sky. The runes below keep their steady glow, but his attention leaves the ledge and finds the storm’s hidden current.

Isaru

Isaru

If you knew you had the power to stop a disaster, could you look the other way?

He does not wait. The air sharpens around his claws as he reaches into the wind, reading the storm’s pressure, its bends, its breath.

The clouds answer. Their motion resolves into a slow spiral above Heavens Pillar, and the ledge feels the shape of it, like a drumhead under a waking hand.

Beneath that spiral, a second rhythm emerges, older than the storm and quieter than the stone. It threads through the rune-lines and points inward, deeper under the peak.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

He is not following the weather. He is hearing something beneath it.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

There, then. The mountain is not only holding, it is listening. What did you find?

I pull and allow the storm to strike me, merging with it. A small demonstration of what the man seeks.

SUCCESS (Mediocre Storm Manipulation, rolled +0)

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

Isaru draws the storm toward himself instead of the stone. Wind coils over his scales, climbs his spine, and flashes white along his claws.

The gust slams through him, then passes. For a breath, his outline blurs with rain and cloud, a living shape in the weather.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

He is not forcing it. He is becoming the current.

The rune-lines answer at once, brightening in a clean ring around Isaru’s feet and along the cliff edge.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

That is what I have been trying to explain. The mountain does not obey power, it recognizes accord.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

You make it look less like a command, and more like a conversation.

The deeper pulse steadies beneath them, no longer restless. The lord lowers his voice, watching Isaru with open wonder.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

I was not wrong to ask you here. Tell me, is there a name for what you just did, or is that still a mystery even to you?

"This is aetheric conduction. If this is a power you would choose to pursue, are you willing to put your life at risk for it? Even among my kind, we know to not tempt fate."

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

Isaru lets the current settle back into the air, then turns the lesson outward instead of inward. The lightning in his claws fades to a faint crackle as he studies the lord with a calm, measuring stare.

Isaru

Isaru

This is aetheric conduction. The storm moves through a willing shape, not a forced one. If you choose to chase it, you risk more than pain, you risk being carried too far.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

A willing shape. So that is the price, not raw force but consent... and restraint.

The rune ring answers with a brief, approving shimmer, as if the mountain itself recognizes the distinction. Wind tugs at the lord’s cloak, but he does not look away.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Then it is not a trick to be seized. It is a pact to survive. I have gambled with stranger things than my life, but not with my understanding.

He lifts one hand, palm open toward the glowing stone, then stops short of touching it. The hesitation is visible, honest, and deliberate.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Tell me plainly, Isaru, would you call that wisdom, or only the kind of caution that keeps a man alive long enough to regret his answers?

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn whether the Exiled Lord can be trusted with this power

"That is not something that I can answer. The stone here is merely a marker. You are hardly the first to seek power past understanding."

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

Isaru’s answer lands like a blade set flat, not swung. The rune-ring holds its steady glow as he names the stone for what it is, and the lord’s hand pauses in the air between doubt and intent.

Isaru

Isaru

That is not something I can answer. The stone here is only a marker. You are hardly the first to reach for power before understanding it.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Only a marker... Then I have mistaken the sign for the door itself.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

No. I have mistaken it. I kept asking what the storm wanted, when I should have asked what I was willing to become.

At that, the lord lowers his hand from the stone. The motion is slow, but it is real, and the glow on the runes does not flare in protest.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

You speak as one who has seen others break themselves on old promises. Was that warning born from study, or from loss?

Wind combs across the ledge. Below them, the cliffside sigils keep their calm, while the lord waits without reaching again.

I do not answer, turning back inside. The price is heavy.

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

Isaru turns from the ledge without another word. The rune-light washes over his scales as he angles back toward the fortress mouth, and the wind slips past him instead of pushing him off line.

Behind him, the Exiled Lord stays where he is. He does not reach after Isaru, only watches the withdrawal with a face gone thoughtful in the steady glow.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

You leave me with the weight of it, then. That may be fair.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

If he will not name the cost, he still shows me its shape.

Isaru reaches the shadow of the entry cut into the stone. The cliffside sigils remain calm, but their light now frames the opening like a watchful threshold.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Before you go farther, tell me this much. When you refused to answer, was it because the answer is ugly, or because it is not mine yet?

The lord’s question hangs between them, plain and direct. For the first time, his voice sounds less like a plea for judgment and more like a man trying to speak honestly beside one.

"These powers care not who you are or your life." The tone is pained. "My trials are not yours to take. You need to find your own path."

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

Isaru answers from the threshold, his voice low but steady. He leaves the storm and the stone outside his words, and only the hard edge of the truth remains.

Isaru

Isaru

These powers do not care who you are, or what they cost you. My trials are not yours to take. Find your own path.

The Exiled Lord flinches as if struck, then lets the blow settle. He lowers his chin and absorbs the judgment without protest, the glow from the cliff sigils tracing the lines of doubt across his face.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Then I have been borrowing a road that was never mine.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

You speak as one who has already learned the difference. I have mistaken endurance for guidance, and hunger for duty.

He takes one careful step nearer the entry, not crossing it, only closing the distance enough to be heard plainly over the wind.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Then tell me this, if the mountain does not choose for me. What does a path look like, when it is truly your own?

I head back inside, having no further answers for the lord at this time, nor willing to entertain

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +3)

Ascent to the Storm-Swept Peak

Isaru turns away from the ledge and steps back into the fortress, his broad shadow sliding over the threshold sigils. The wind drops off at once, leaving the chamber air colder and stiller behind him.

The Exiled Lord does not follow. He stays in the outer light, watching Isaru go with a face tightened by restraint and something like respect.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

Then I will not chase your road. I only ask this much, before the stone takes back the silence. If I am to stand near it, what should I never do?

As the question hangs between them, the cliff sigils answer on their own. A second line, thin as a hair and bright as fresh lightning, wakes beside the steady runes and runs toward the fortress entry.

It stops at Isaru's feet, marking the threshold like a deliberate path, not a warning.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

It is showing you a way in. Or showing me where to wait.

The lord lifts his head, his doubt sharpened now into attention. He looks from the new line to Isaru, and waits for the next choice without moving.
