Snow hisses against black stone as Isaru glides toward the mountain spire. Below, the festival lanterns gutter in the wind, half-swallowed by a sudden storm.
At the gate, an exiled lord stands bareheaded in the frost, cloak snapping hard around him. He has the posture of a man waiting for judgment, not guests.

Jorren
Storm-drake, at last. If fortune sent you, it has a cruel sense of timing.
A cracked horn sounds from within the spire, and the music below stutters to silence. The lord's hand tightens on the gatebar, but he does not lower his gaze.

Jorren
The festival is broken, and the mountain is listening. Come closer, or turn back, but choose quickly.

Isaru
The storm above the spire is moving against the wind.
Lightning crawls over the ridge, briefly bleaching the carved doors white. Something heavy shifts behind them, and the lord's expression hardens into wary resolve.

Jorren
Will you help me hold this place, Isaru, or let my fortune fail in the dark?

Discover the exiled lord's motives
“Not many come to visit me at home. The festival at the town far below is a nice sight, even if distant. "Are you pursued?" I've little interest in sheltering one that only seeks to take advantage of me.”
FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled -1)

Snow hisses across the spire as the exiled lord holds your gaze, his cloak snapping in the wind.

Jorren
No. Not pursued. Watched, perhaps, by those who would rather see this peak abandoned.
He lifts one hand toward the lanterns, their yellow light trembling in the storm.

Jorren
I came here to keep this fortress standing through winter, and to keep what is buried beneath it from waking.

Isaru
He is guarding something below the stone.

Jorren
If I meant to use you, Isaru, I would have spoken flatter. I ask only a wary ally, or a witness.
Below them, the distant festival flickers on through the snow, small and unchanged.

Jorren
Will you hear the full story, or leave me to this mountain alone?
“I will hear the full story”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Isaru lowers his head in silent permission, and the lord at once lets out a breath he seems to have been holding for days.

Jorren
Then listen, and judge me after. I was cast out for refusing to seal this mountain and call it mercy.

Jorren
Beneath the fortress lies an old oath-stone. My house swore it would never be broken, only guarded.

Jorren
My kin wanted the stone hidden forever. I wanted to learn why it still answers in storms.
He turns his palm upward. Snow catches there, then melts against the heat of his skin as he speaks of it.

Jorren
If the oath fails, the peak will not simply crack. It will open. That is why I came alone, and why I asked for a witness instead of a blade.
The wind eases for a heartbeat, and his gaze stays on Isaru, waiting for a response.
