The Awakening of the Oath-Stone

The hum pulls Isaru down through a裂 in the fortress rock, into a hidden chamber far below the battlements. Cold air washes over basalt walls, wet with spring seepage and old frost. Lanternlight from above never reaches here.

At the chamber’s heart stands an ancient oath-stone, half-buried in silver-veined roots. It shivers in time with the mountain, and the floor around it trembles like a throat trying to speak.

The Exiled Lord

At last. It is waking beneath the seal... I feared this day.

The Exiled Lord drops to one knee, one hand pressed to the stone, fighting for breath. He does not look away from the seal.

The oath-stone is older than the fortress.

If it breaks, the peak will not stay shut. Help me hold it, or witness what I could not bury.

Below them, the roots brighten with a dim inner glow, and the chamber answers with a deeper, patient pulse, as if the mountain itself has opened one eye.

✓ Quest Accepted

Assess the Exiled Lord's trustworthiness

I am not unfamiliar with the old relics. Though, why is the lord messing with it?

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +2)

The Awakening of the Oath-Stone

The Exiled Lord loosens his grip on the seal, and the chamber’s hard light settles into a wary hush. He watches the stone as if it might speak first.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

I did not summon it. I only answered when the mountain began to tremble.

He kneels beside the cracked floor, palm open over the runes, then draws back before touching them.

The oath-stone does not merely bind. It remembers every vow laid upon it, and every broken one, too.

The runes are reacting to the chamber, not just the stone.

A thin pulse of mountain magic threads through the fissures. The stone answers with a low, grudging hum, and the air tastes older.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

I can hold it steady for a breath, perhaps two. But if I am unworthy, it will know before you do.

He meets Isaru’s gaze, tense and unblinking, then nods toward the stone as though offering his own judgment with it.

Let the lord sacrifice themselves.

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

The Awakening of the Oath-Stone

Isaru lifts back from the seal and gives the lord the space he is asking for, not with a command, but with the calm of a guardian making room for judgment. The chamber answers with a brief, steadier hush.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

You would trust the stone with my life before you trust me with its.

He straightens, then steps into the ring of runes alone. The pulse gathers under his knees and climbs his arms like cold light finding an old path.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

I know what it means to be measured and found wanting. Let it measure me, then.

The oath-stone answers with a clear, ringing thrum. One deep fissure in the glow knits shut, and a second pattern surfaces beneath it, older and finer than the first.

Isaru

The older vow is the lock, and the newer one is only the latch.

The Exiled Lord

The Exiled Lord

There. Do you see it now? This chamber was built to remember more than one promise.

He keeps both hands open over the runes, breathing through the pressure, while the stone settles into a patient, watchful glow. The question remains in the air, whether Isaru names the buried vow aloud or lets the lord continue alone.
