Boots and claws scrape at the ledge. A kobold hauls himself over the lip, orange scales dusted gray with mine grit, pack straps cutting across his chest.

Rukalog Coalrun

Rukalog Coalrun

You. Dragon. Was that mountain-shaking yours?

Rukalog steadies himself, gold eyes darting from Isaru to Jorren and Talimaryl. His pick and lamp jostle at his belt, ready but not raised.

Rukalog Coalrun

Rukalog Coalrun

I come from below, and the stone never moves like that for nothing. If you broke something sealed, say so plainly.

Jorren

Jorren

He is not here for the oath-stone. He sounds like a miner with a deadline.

Talimaryl shifts aside, giving the kobold room. The rune-line at their feet holds steady, the mountain quiet but watchful.

Isaru

Isaru

...Yes?

Rukalog blinks, then points one claw toward the cliff below, urgency cutting through his caution.

Rukalog Coalrun

Rukalog Coalrun

Good. Then you can help me get back down. There is a tunnel under this peak, and something in it has started to answer.

Keep the mountain's awakening secret

I can throw the kobold off the mountain, using wind manipulation to let it land safely.

SUCCESS (Fair Storm Manipulation, rolled +2)

Isaru answers without flourish, a snap of motion and a hard beat of wind. Rukalog lifts from the ledge as if the cliff itself has let go of him.

The kobold flails once, then the gale catches cleanly under him, carrying him away from the drop instead of into it.

He lands below on a lower shelf of stone with a rough skid, breath knocked out but bones intact. His lamp clatters, then steadies at his belt.

Rukalog Coalrun

Rukalog Coalrun

What in the deep shafts was that?

Jorren steps to the brink, staring down after him, while Talimaryl’s head turns sharply toward the mountain path rune glowing at Isaru's feet.

Talimaryl

Talimaryl

He still has a voice. That is fortunate.

From below comes the scrape of claws on stone, then Rukalog’s urgent shout rising back up the cliffside.

They wanted a way down, I gave them one. The mountain shifting with us training here is not new.

Rukalog’s shout hitches into the wind, but it carries enough. The kobold is not cursing now, he is warning, and the mountain carries his words straight up the cliff.

Rukalog Coalrun

Rukalog Coalrun

Up there, listen to me, there’s movement under the old workings. Not cave-in, not tremor. Something is answering the stone.

Jorren pulls back from the brink, jaw tight, while Talimaryl studies the glowing path-line as if measuring how much it reveals and how much it hides.

Talimaryl

Talimaryl

That is the sort of claim that can empty a summit, or start one.

Isaru

Isaru

They wanted a way down. I gave them one. The mountain shifting with us here is no stranger than us standing on it.

The words settle cleanly. Rukalog’s panic falters, because the mountain’s pulse underfoot is already visible in the rune-line, and the three of them can see it as the same old work, not a fresh alarm.

Jorren

Jorren

Then speak plain, miner. What woke beneath your shafts?

I send him back underground. Kobolds can be useful but this one hasn't shown anything of value yet.

The kobold freezes on the lower shelf, tail tight against the stone. Isaru’s command lands in the wind like a door slammed shut.

Rukalog Coalrun

Rukalog Coalrun

Back underground? You think I came up here for air? There are tunnels cracking below us, and something is taking note.

Jorren’s gaze flicks to the path-line, then back to the ledge below. He does not soften, but he does listen.

Talimaryl

Talimaryl

If he is lying, he is frightened enough to believe it. If he is not, we have a deeper problem than his voice.

Rukalog grips his pack strap and points down the cliff, not at the summit, but toward the mountain’s hidden body.

Rukalog Coalrun

Rukalog Coalrun

I can take you to the workings, or I can run and tell every miner on the slope what I heard. Your choice.

The rune-line beside Talimaryl brightens once, as if the mountain itself marks the fork in the road.

I am a dragon of the sky, I have no interest in going underground. If jorren or Tali want to go, they can.

Isaru lets the wind settle around his wings and simply refuses the tunnel with his stillness. The choice hangs there, plain and unanswered, and the kobold is left looking to the two dragons instead of to him.

Jorren straightens at the brink, his attention fixed on the lower shelf. Talimaryl keeps his head angled toward the rune-line, reading the glow as if it might speak next.

Rukalog Coalrun

Rukalog Coalrun

Fine. Then say it now. Are you stopping me, or letting me go tell them?

Talimaryl

Talimaryl

He is not bluffing. Either answer alters the mountain's silence.

The kobold's pack strap slips from one shoulder, the motion small but sharp, and a pebble skitters off the shelf into the dark below.

For a heartbeat, the cliff answers with a low pulse from the rune-line, bright against the storm-wet stone. The mountain keeps its secret, but it now waits on Isaru's next move.
