Walking Into the Karris Knot

The keyring sits heavy in Lo’s palm as he turns the last iron tooth. The tar-sweet lock gives with a tired click, the same sound that once promised trouble at the watch garrison’s notice board.

The door swings inward. Stale air spills out, carrying dock-salt, lamp oil, and old paper. The Stray Cat stays back in the shadowed frame, ears sharp, as Lo steps into the inner chamber.

Inside, crates are stacked beneath a hanging lamp. Two fresh bounty notices lie pinned to a board, their ink still crisp. One bears the face Lo saw in the yard. The other carries a mark from Karris, a guild seal cut and reused.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Those were posted very recently. Same hands, same route. This room is feeding the hunt.

Lo’s stolen slips and tokens answer the room all at once, the wax seal, the iron token, the dock receipt. The ledgers, notices, and marks fit together like snapped teeth. Karris was never far behind him.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

So that is the shape of it. Not random work, a net. And Lo just walked into the knot.

✓ Quest Accepted

Expose the dock runners' operation

I say, i should take all this to the gaurd house no?

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -2)

Walking Into the Karris Knot
Lo

Lo

I should take all this to the guard house, no?

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Aye. This board is not a rumor. It is a handoff trail with a city seal on its throat.

Lo gathers the notice board slips close, and the iron token bites into his palm. The room answers with a low ward-pulse from somewhere deeper in the walls.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

If the watch sees this pile, they see the net. If they do not, they are in it too.

The damaged ledger page sticks to Lo’s fingers as he shifts the bundle. Fresh lamp smoke wavers overhead, and the Karris seal stares out from the notices like a fresh cut.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Take the papers if you go. Leave the sealed marks behind, or the wrong hand follows your trail home.

Lo has the evidence in hand, but the ward in the room flares once, bright enough to paint the crates gold, as if something elsewhere has just noticed the door opening.

✓ Quest Accepted

Take the evidence to the guard house

I say, it is my alias im from Karris, should take all this to the gaurd house no?

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +0)

Lo keeps the evidence hugged tight, and his words land clean. The Stray Cat’s ears ease forward, not less wary, just more certain.

Lo

Lo

I say it is my alias. I am from Karris. We should take all this to the guard house, no?

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Aye. That is sound. If your name is on the papers, the watch needs to hear it from you, not from the wrong mouth.

They angle closer to the board together. The ward’s gold fade leaves a dull sheen on the crates, and the damaged ledger page sticks to Lo’s fingers like it wants to be counted too.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

I have seen runners hide behind clerks, and clerks hide behind seals. This room is built for passing blame. Taking it in ends that game.

The cat taps the iron token with one claw, then flicks a look toward the tar-stained door and back to Lo.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

We go together, then. You carry the story, I carry what I can prove.

I think over the main plots

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +1)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

Lo studies the papers in his hands and the shape of the room fits together at once. The notices are not random, they are fed through a chain. Names move, seals move, and blame moves with them.

Lo

Lo

The ledger page and the iron token are both pieces of the same hand.

The damaged page shows the handoff route, the token marks who can pass it, and the fresh bounty notices prove the route is used to hunt specific people after the fact. This is not one trick, it is a system.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Aye, that is the shape of it. They do not just move cargo, they move stories until the wrong name looks guilty.

Lo turns one notice over and the back bears the same neat accounting marks as the ledger. The ward’s dull glow licks across the board, as if the room itself is keeping score.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Karris sits above the runners, or inside them. Either way, this place is feeding a wider net than one dock lane.

The pieces settle into a final order in Lo’s mind. The warehouse is a relay point, the bounty board is part of the relay, and the trap is built to turn evidence into a fresh target.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Then we take the proof, and we make them answer for the net they have cast.

Lo leaves Tar-sweet warehouse inner chamber behind and arrives at main guard house.

I loot the rooms most valuables and I take the proof to the active at night main gaurd house

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

The guard house smells of damp wool, lamp smoke, and old paperwork. Lo slips in with the proof tucked tight, while the night watch at the desks keeps to its own business.

He empties the loot onto a plank counter, the damaged page, the iron token, and the fresh notices all catching the lamplight together.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

There. Let them see the shape of it. Every mark points back to the same hands.

A clerk on duty looks up, frowns at the seals, and calls for a ledger box. Nearby watchmen lean closer as the papers are sorted against the house records.

Clerk

Clerk

These names match our current postings. And this token, this is not a market trinket.

The clerk flips the damaged page, checks the route marks, and goes pale as the pattern lines up with the warded notice board in the yard.

Clerk

Clerk

This reaches beyond one dock lane. If this is real, the runners are feeding the watch false blood trails.

The watchmaster takes the papers, sets the token beside the lantern, and starts issuing quiet orders as Lo and Stray stand by with the proof in plain sight.

Quest Complete

Expose the dock runners' operation

New Gift: Dockside Investigator

I say, i can subdue this runner

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +0)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

Lo lifts one paw from the proof and speaks plain, offering to subdue the runner himself. The room stills around the counter.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

Good. I want him alive, bound, and talking.

The Watchmaster sets the iron token down beside the lantern and turns fully to Lo, weighing him with a clipped nod.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

If you can take the runner cleanly, you have my leave. No blood on my floor.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Then let him move now, before the whole chain scatters.

The clerk snaps the ledger box shut and points toward the inner passage, where boots sound once, then stop.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

Down the hall. Left at the lamp niche. Bring back the man who carried the route marks.

The watchmaster's orders ripple outward, and a watchman opens the side door while the warded notices tremble on the wall, waiting for Lo's choice of approach.

I reply cleanly and head to the target

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

Lo gives the brief answer cleanly, then slips from the counter as the side door yawns open. The watchhouse air changes with him, from lantern-warm to brisk and narrow.

He moves into the hall without hesitation, paws light on the boards. Behind him, the watchmaster and clerk stay at the counter with the evidence, their voices dropping into work talk.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

There. Follow the boot marks, not the noise.

The passage bends left under a line of lamp niches. Fresh bootprints cross the dust, and a smear of damp mud clings to the wall at shoulder height.

Lo reaches the bend just as a shadow cuts across the far end of the corridor. The runner is there, half-turned, one hand already clutching at a satchel strap.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

He is in sight. Keep him alive.

The runner jerks back toward a service alcove, but Lo is already close enough to catch the move before it turns into flight. The ward in the outer room gives one muted pulse behind him.

The runner freezes with his heels against the wall, eyes wide on Lo and the open hall beyond, caught before he can bolt or shout.

I sleep dart blow dart the target

SUCCESS (Good Ranged Combat, rolled +2)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

Lo snaps the blow dart up and releases. The needle kisses the runner’s neck with almost no sound.

The runner jolts, fingers slipping from the satchel strap, then his knees fold under him.

He hits the boards hard, not shouting, only blinking through sudden heaviness.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Clean shot. Keep your hands ready.

The corridor goes still except for the faint, uneasy pulse of the outer ward behind them.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

Well caught. Bind him before he wakes, and tell me what he was carrying.

The satchel lies on the floor beside the dropped runner, and the hall waits on Lo’s next move.

I tie him up with wound rope at my waist

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

Lo crouches in and loops his waist rope around the runner’s wrists, drawing the slack clean with a practiced tug.

The runner’s arms pin tight behind him, and the rope bites enough to hold without waking him.

Lo shifts around to the runner’s ankles, cinching them together before the man can stir.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

Good. Move the satchel here.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

That knot will hold long enough for questions.

The outer ward gives another faint pulse through the wall, and the satchel lies waiting beside the bound runner.

I turn him into the watchmaster

SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +3)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

Lo gets both paws under the bound runner and hauls him up in one smooth lift. The man’s boots scrape once, then hang as Lo turns toward the watchmaster.

The runner lands hard at the watchmaster’s feet, wrists and ankles cinched tight. The satchel stays on the floor behind them, half in shadow.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

Good. Put him here, and keep that sack in sight.

As Lo angles the runner around, the iron token at the watchmaster’s belt catches the lantern light. The clerk straightens at the counter, eyes snapping from the damaged ledger page to the bound man.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

That ward pulse just changed. It is answering the room, not the door.

The pulse beyond the wall answers again, stronger this time, and a thin seam of light leaks under the side passage.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

Then this is bigger than one runner. Clerk, seal the hall. Lo, stay with me.

The runner jerks awake long enough to choke out a single word, then bites it back as Lo’s grip holds him steady. The ward flares once more, and the satchel gives a soft, answering glow.

I cast end spell

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +1)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

Lo lifts both hands and shapes the end spell with a clean, deliberate motion. The warding light catches on his claws, then thins as if something tight is finally loosening.

The seam under the passage gutters once, then goes still. The pulse beyond the wall breaks apart into a dull flicker and fades.

The satchel’s answering glow drains away with it, leaving only the lantern light and the ragged edge of the damaged page on the counter.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

There. Hold him. The ward is down.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

That was tied to the room, not a single charm. Something deeper just stopped speaking.

Clerk

Clerk

Then the hidden ledger route was real... gods.

The runner twists once in Lo’s hold, staring toward the now-dark passage. The iron token at the watchmaster’s belt hangs motionless, dull in the quiet.

I call for the gaurds to take him

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +3)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

Lo’s voice cuts across the hall, calm and sure. The runner stops twisting as the watchhouse men answer at once, boots scraping stone.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

Take him. Wrist irons first, then the satchel.

Two guards move in from the side arch, one with manacles, one with a ring of keys. The clerk straightens behind the counter, eyes fixed on the damaged page.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

Good. If the wards answer the room, they answer the route too.

The runner is hauled upright, forced to show his hands. The iron token at the watchmaster’s belt clicks against the buckle as he turns toward the counter.

Clerk

Clerk

That ledger mark matches the house records. This is not one runner, it is a chain.

One guard lifts the satchel flap and pulls free a folded route sheet stamped with the same trade-house seal. The watchmaster’s stare hardens.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

Then we have their path. Bind him and bring the sheet here, now.

I say, this is a big lead, i must get to my inn soon before it is late though, shall i collect the bounty in the morning and see what becomes of this all tomorrow

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +3)

Lo

Lo

This is a big lead. I need to get to my inn before it gets too late. Shall I collect the bounty in the morning and see what comes of this tomorrow?

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

You may. If this trail is clean, we keep it warm and locked down until dawn.

The watchmaster gives a short, exact nod. The clerk’s shoulders ease by a fraction, and one of the guards lowers the satchel onto the counter instead of hauling it away.

The Stray Cat

The Stray Cat

He is choosing steadiness over triumph. That matters.

Clerk

Clerk

The route sheet is copied. The damaged page, the iron token, and the ledger mark are all recorded. Nothing here vanishes tonight.

The clerk slides a fresh slate forward and scratches out a receipt with quick, careful strokes. The iron token lies beside it, dull in lantern light, while the folded route sheet stays open under the watchmaster’s palm.

Watchmaster

Watchmaster

Come back at first light. If you want the bounty, bring your name and we will set it properly. If this chain reaches higher, I will want your eyes on it.

That is enough for the hall to settle. No one bars Lo’s path, and no one pushes him deeper tonight. The room holds on the evidence, and the morning is left waiting.

Lo leaves main guard house behind and arrives at the inn.

I finish with them and head to the inn im staying at

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Walking Into the Karris Knot

The inn takes Lo in with warm lantern glow, damp cloaks, and the smell of stew drifting from the back hearth. The common room is fuller than before, but the noise stays low, easy to step into.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Back again. Your room is ready, and I’ve got dinner on the board.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

One plate is the simple one, free with a rented room, and it comes with a small beer. The other costs a little more, but it is dressed proper, cooked with care.

He hooks a thumb toward the steam rising from the kitchen door, then toward the stair with a practiced, welcoming ease. A key ring glints at his belt beside the tap ledger.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Room or no room, you can eat tonight. If you want the better meal, I’ll have it sent out hot.

Lo slips past the counter as the innkeeper waits for his choice, and the stairwell opens up ahead of him. The evening settles around the tables, but the meal has not yet been decided.

I choose the simple meal and beer, i ask, do you have enough gaurds in this town, i took up bounty work and with many jobs could attract danger, maybe to here even.

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +0)

Walking Into the Karris Knot
Lo

Lo

I’ll take the simple meal and beer. And tell me, do you have enough guards in this town? I’ve taken bounty work, and that can bring trouble even here.

The innkeeper nods once, not rushed, and taps the cheaper meal on his ledger before calling the order back toward the kitchen. The steam from the hearth curls around his shoulder as the common room hums with low talk and clinked crockery.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Simple meal, small beer. A fair choice. As for guards, Hothmmur has enough to watch its doors, not enough to sleep easy with them.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Bounty work draws noise, yes. If it follows you, it can reach any house in the lane, mine included.

He reaches beneath the counter and sets down Lo’s plate himself, the bowl steaming beside a foaming cup. A little splash of beer slops over the rim when it lands.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Not enough guards for every shadow, but enough that trouble has to be bold.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

If you mean to keep your head low, eat first. Then listen. Folks talk more after supper, and that is how you learn which streets to avoid.

Quest Complete

Take the evidence to the guard house

I say, i would hate to have a night break-in and someone disturbs the guest over revenge, or during day time draws blood in or around the inn

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +2)

Walking Into the Karris Knot
Lo

Lo

I would hate for trouble to come in at night, or for someone to draw blood here by day, near the inn.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

A fair concern. If violence comes through my door, it does not stay polite for long.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Tell me plain, do you want me watching the room for you, or just keeping an ear open?

He folds a cloth once, then sets it aside, giving Lo his full attention instead of the ledger. The room keeps breathing around them, plates, laughter, and the crackle of the hearth all blurring into a low backdrop.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

If someone comes looking for revenge, I would rather know before they reach your table.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

And if the trouble is daylight trouble, I can still put eyes on it before it stains my floor.

He gives a small, serious nod, the sort that says he understands exactly what kind of customer Lo is becoming, and he means to keep the house steady anyway.

Keep the inn safe from revenge trouble

I say, i would hate to have a night break-in and someone disturbs the guest over revenge, or during day time draws blood in or around the inn

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +0)

Lo's warning lands cleanly. The innkeeper does not flinch, he only rests a hand on the counter and watches the room with fresh intent. The spilled beer gleams between them.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Then I keep an eye on the door and the tables both. If trouble comes calling, it meets me first.

He reaches for the tap ledger, then leaves it closed, choosing Lo over the numbers for a moment longer.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

You carry yourself like someone who expects to be followed. That is not a shame, but it is useful to know.

The hearth pops softly. A serving girl passes in the background, and the innkeeper lowers his voice without losing its edge.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Tell me this, are you bringing work to Hothmmur, or is Hothmmur already bringing work to you?

He studies Lo for the answer, steady and protective, as if the next word might decide whether he stands watch all night.

I watch my manners, mind my 2 drink of the day by slowing my pace a bit, not to sway

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Lo slows his drinking to a careful rhythm, keeping the cup steady and his shoulders loose. The ale goes down clean, and the second drink stays second. The innkeeper watches that restraint and nods once, as if it confirms something he hoped to see.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Good. A steady hand tells me more than a loud promise ever could.

He eases his grip on the counter, not less alert, only less braced. The spilled beer on the wood catches the hearthlight, a small bright patch between them.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

People who can pace themselves tend to last longer in a city like this. Lasting matters more than boasting.

A serving girl passes behind him, then keeps moving when she sees the shape of the conversation. The innkeeper lowers his voice, not secretive, just careful.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

If you are settling here, you will need more than shelter. You will need names, routes, and one or two people who remember your face kindly.

Lo

Lo

He speaks like someone who has seen the cost of being alone.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

I can point you toward honest work, yes. I can also tell you which men drink too hard, which streets turn mean after dark, and who comes through my door only when they want trouble kept quiet.

He taps the counter once, then looks to Lo with open, practical patience. For the moment, the room stays calm around them.

I watch my manners, mind my 2 drink of the day by slowing my pace a bit, not to sway

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Lo lets the second drink sit before he lifts it again, then takes only a small pull. The cup stays level in his paw, and the room keeps its balance with him.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

That is the sort of habit that keeps a man upright. Good.

The innkeeper reaches for the spilled beer with a cloth, wiping the counter clean in slow strokes instead of rushing to refill. His eyes stay on Lo, practical and calm.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

I have known too many folk who drink like they are trying to outrun their own feet. You are not doing that.

He sets the cloth aside and leans both hands on the bar, his posture open now, no longer testing. The hearth crackles behind him, and the common room hums low around the pair of them.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

If you keep your wits, Hothmmur will be kinder to you. If you lose them, it will be quick to notice.

Lo keeps his breathing even and his shoulders loose, the way he would before a long walk. The ale settles warm, but it does not tug him sideways.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

Tell me straight, do you want the city to know you as a worker, a singer, or a quiet man with good manners?

I watch my manners, keep my area kept. I respect my 2nd drink of the day by slowing my pace a bit, not to sway

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -2)

Lo steadies the cup and keeps his pace unhurried. The ale goes down clean, and he sets the tankard back with care instead of a clatter.

The innkeeper notices at once. His shoulders ease a little, and the watchful edge in his face turns into something warmer.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

A man who can drink without scrambling his own thoughts is easier to trust. That matters here.

He slides the cloth aside and keeps his hands on the bar, speaking as if the room is no longer a test, only a place to be in.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

If you want roots, I can point you at honest tables, honest work, and the folk worth remembering. If you want silence, I can give you that too.

The ale is strong enough to warm his chest, but not enough to blur the edge of the room.

Innkeeper

Innkeeper

You have the look of someone learning a town on purpose. That is rarer than coin.

A small sting of bitterness rises in Lo's throat from the second drink, and he swallows it down with the rest. His paws stay steady on the counter, but the cup now feels heavier for having cost him focus.
