Adventure of Lo 3

Under the warehouse eaves, the warrant trembles in Lo’s paw. The stone in his pack hums back at the door lock, same rhythm, same pulse.

Stray’s ears pin flat atop the crate. A slit of light shows under the rusted door, then the ward in the lock answers with a soft click.

The door cracks open a finger’s width. Warm air spills out with the smell of lamp oil, damp rope, and old paper. Somebody inside is already moving.

From inside, a voice hisses, low and urgent. Not a guard, not a merchant. A hand shoves a bundled ledger toward the gap, as if trying to send it into the street before it is seen.

Lo lunges in and catches the reaching wrist through the gap. The ledger shifts into his grasp at the same instant, paper scraping wet wood.

The Hidden Voice jerks hard, and the bundle comes free with a tearing snap. A thin strip of binding cord whips against Lo’s palm, stinging it red.

Inside the warehouse, boots slam on planks. The cracked door shudders wider, and a lantern glow spills across stacked crates and splintered paper.

The ward in the lock flares in answer to the stone in Lo’s pack, bright enough to outline the ledger’s seal and a glint of metal hidden beneath its wrap.

From inside the warehouse, an armored voice barks for the door to be held. The hand is gone now, but the ledger is in Lo’s paw, warm and suddenly heavier than it looks.

Lo snaps the bundle tight against his chest and backs away from the threshold, keeping his shoulders low and his steps silent.

The ward-light fades from the seal, but the hidden metal under the wrap gives a sharp, answering click.

Lo slips the ledger under his cloak, the cracked leather pressing flat against his ribs as he turns from the warehouse mouth.

Behind him, the door shudders again, and armored voices crowd closer through the lantern spill.

On the garrison wall, the two fresh bounty notices flutter in the draft from the open warehouse, their corners lifting like they have been noticed too.

Lo slips off at an angle, low and quick, and the yard swallows him before the doorway can turn his way.

His cloak brushes the wall once, then goes still. The ledger stays hidden, and no boot answers his path.

The warded stone gives a thin pulse under Lo’s cloak, and the warehouse latch gives a soft, answering shift.

Inside, armored voices snap to attention. One guard barks, and the lantern spill jolts brighter across the yard.
