The ravine mouth blacks out under a wall of steel and torchlight. Horns answer from the heights, and the kingdom’s hunt closes in. Sigrid stands ankle-deep in churned snow, the dead cavalryman at the rock wall behind her, his sword half-buried in red ice.

Frost giantess. You have nowhere left to run. Yield, and die on your knees if you have any shame left.

A line of spears tightens at the ravine mouth. Archers nock arrows above them. Their horses stamp and snort at the edges, unwilling to push into the narrow kill path.

The ravine is too narrow for their full charge.

Hold the line. Burn her out if you must. Do not let her break through.

Torches flare higher. The first arrows begin to fall into the snow around Sigrid, and the spears inch forward together, testing whether fear or duty wins first.

Sigrid grips her huge ice greatclub in both hands. The hunt is gathered, committed, and close enough now to feel her breath. One brutal decision will end this ravine, one way or another.

Sigrid channels her berserker rage and charges them without fear.

Sigrid lunges into the spear line. Snow explodes beneath her boots as the front rank recoils, and the cramped wall of men loses its shape at once.

Her greatclub sweeps low, smashing shields aside and driving one Hunt Soldier into another. The mouth of the ravine turns into a knot of stumbling bodies and splintered ash.

Hold! Hold the line, damn you!

A spear thrust catches only snow where her chest was, and the captain's horse scrambles backward from the press.

Sigrid closes the distance anyway, forcing the hunters to give ground step by step. One soldier drops his spear and throws himself sideways to avoid the club's next crash.

She breaks us, fall back!

The command lands too late. The ravine mouth buckles, torches bob and tilt, and the line opens around Sigrid's advance.

Behind her, the dead man's sword lies untouched in the red ice. Ahead, the hunt is no longer a wall, only frightened men trying to decide whether they still have a line at all.

Cornered in the Ravine

The ravine rang with shattered steel and stamping boots.

Fall back! Mark her and run!

Then run.

The Hunt broke, spilling through the snow in a rout.

When the last of the hunting horns faded, Sigrid stood alone in the ravine with her breath smoking in the cold. The kingdom's net had torn, and its soldiers carried their fear back into the tundra. In the silence that followed, the ice and wind remembered her name.
