The blood-red canopy shudders as Vas emerges from the trees, weathered leather armor dark with mud. He carries a crude map of imperial patrol routes, clenched in one broad hand.
He stops beside the cold fire and studies the silver seal bearing Matriarch Harvess’s mark. His grim gaze shifts from the crest to Effruin, weighing the parchment’s value.

Vas the Vanguard
You left us a road and a dead courier. Tell me that seal can lead the survivors somewhere safer than this forest.
Vas unfolds the crude map across the broken satchel, pinning its corners with stones. Mud has blurred several routes, but marked patrol lines converge toward the camp’s last known position.

Vas the Vanguard
Imperial hunters are already closing in. Eve stayed with the wounded, and the others have no chance if we send them blind.
Rain ticks against the stone-hard leaves. Vas keeps one finger on the map while the forest road waits ahead, offering no promise beyond distance and pursuit.
“I refuse to help Vas, which makes him furious with me. As he gets angrier, some of his followers begin to surround me, expecting a fight.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Effruin leaves Vas’s demand unanswered. He steps away from the map and the silver seal, refusing the survivors’ fate without offering explanation.

Vas the Vanguard
You walk away while families bleed in the mud? Then stand there and prove you are worth more than your spite.
Vas’s followers spread through the trees, boots grinding wet leaves into the road. They form a rough ring around Effruin, hands near clubs, knives, and scavenged blades.
His scars and missing arm make their confidence easy; to them, the escaped slave is a criminal isolated from every lawful shield. That contempt surrounds him more tightly than steel.
Effruin remains still. Vengeance’s Mark narrows his attention onto Vas and the ring, while Resists Blood Ties leaves the former rebellion’s demands powerless to claim him.

Vas the Vanguard
You will not help us, and you will not leave as though we are beneath your notice. Give me one reason not to let them kill you.
Effruin does not yield or retreat. His silence holds against Vas’s fury and the surrounding rebels, refusing their command without beginning the fight they expect.

Keep Harvess’s lead out of Vas’s control
“I tell Vas that I never liked him, and that he has always been a thug. Vas, in response, transforms into a giant bear and attacks me.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Effruin
I never liked you, thug.
The insult crosses the wet road without heat or hesitation. The surviving rebels tighten their ring, their contempt for an escaped slave turning Vas’s anger into permission.
Vas’s body swells beneath the leather, bones rolling with wet cracks as coarse fur bursts across him. In moments, a giant bear towers where the druid stood, claws gouging the mud.
Effruin remains untouched by the old rebellion’s claim on him. Vengeance’s Mark narrows his awareness to the bear’s shoulders, paws, and killing momentum.
The Chimera Hide Wineskin knocks against Effruin’s hip, its familiar liquor anchoring a drunken rhythm. His missing arm makes the guard awkward and taxes his left shoulder, but his will does not yield.
The giant bear lunges. Effruin shifts aside and raises his remaining forearm across his chest, catching the impact on his stance instead of his body as mud bursts beneath both feet.
The charge drives him back a short pace, but he remains upright, balanced and ready. Vas’s claws rake empty air while the ring of rebels falls silent around them.

Keep Harvess’s lead out of Vas’s control
“I allow Vas to strike out at me in his bear form, counter-attacking each time in order to slow and weaken him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)

The bear’s second swipe comes low. Effruin lets it pass close, then turns with the drunken rhythm of the Chimera Hide Wineskin and drives his left fist into Vas’s ribs.
Vas twists and snaps his jaws at Effruin’s shoulder. The drow gives ground on purpose, his one-armed guard forcing the remaining limb to absorb the strain before he slips beyond the bite.
Vengeance’s Mark keeps Effruin’s attention fixed on the bear’s weight and timing. He steps inside the next lunge and hammers the joint beneath Vas’s foreleg.
Killing Stroke turns each opening exact rather than wild. Effruin’s fist and shoulder strike in compact succession, slowing the werebear’s advance without breaking his own balance.
The surrounding surviving rebels recoil as Vas’s great form stumbles through the mud. Their contempt for Effruin leaves them slow to intervene, watching their champion lose ground.
Vas drops one paw heavily, breath rough and movements dulled. Effruin remains before him, left arm trembling beneath the strain, while the bear is visibly weakened and no longer able to press the attack.
“I rip out Vas' eyes and break his legs.”
FAILURE (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -4)

Effruin enters beneath the werebear’s guard, his drunken rhythm turning the Chimera Hide Wineskin’s weight into a sudden feint. One arm makes the maneuver awkward, overtaxing his shoulder, but Killing Stroke keeps the attack exact.
Vengeance’s Mark fixes Vas’s face and legs as the only targets that matter. Effruin’s left hand reaches for the bear’s eyes while his foot hooks behind a weakened joint, attempting to wrench him down.
The werebear reacts before the grasp can settle. Vas twists violently, turning his head and dragging the targeted leg clear; Effruin’s fingers catch fur and his kick lands off-line, failing to take either sight or limb.
The miss carries Effruin past Vas’s shoulder. His remaining arm jolts painfully, and the bear’s weight knocks him into the mud. Around them, the surviving rebels recoil, no longer treating the assault as a controlled execution.

Vas the Vanguard
Enough! I will see you dead, you pretentious under-elf!
Vas abandons the larger form and contracts into his battered humanoid body, rolling beyond Effruin’s immediate reach. The change leaves him weakened but mobile, and the rebels close around him, making another identical attempt no longer simple.
“I close the distance with Vas, and kill him with hundreds of strikes to the face within moments.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -1)

Effruin closes the distance before Vas can rise fully. The Chimera Hide Wineskin swings at his hip, turning each stagger into a deceptive shift as his left shoulder strains beneath the one-armed assault.
Vengeance’s Mark fixes Vas’s face and balance in Effruin’s awareness. Killing Stroke finds every opening, and the first strikes drive Vas backward through the mud before he can regain his shape.
The remaining rebels recoil from the escaped slave’s sudden violence, their contempt making them hesitate instead of intervening. Effruin’s flurry becomes a storm of compact blows, delivered too quickly for Vas to answer.
Hundreds of strikes hammer Vas’s face within moments. His guard collapses, his body goes slack, and the werebear’s battered human form falls motionless in the churned road.
The final motion costs Effruin dearly: his left shoulder wrenches under the sustained one-handed chain, and his footing slips hard enough to drop him to one knee beside Vas’s body.
Effruin remains upright after the stumble, breathing through the shoulder’s sharp protest. Around him, the surviving rebels stare at Vas’s dead body and keep their distance.
