Livia Seeks Judgment
Livia
Livia

Effruin reaches the waking common room alone. Above, Sarah remains in the private room, while below, shutters open onto a pale road and the smell of damp earth.

The door opens before he reaches the bar. Livia steps in from the road with travel dust on her boots and a battered pack slung over one shoulder.

Livia

Livia

If you've a moment.

Livia crosses to a scarred table and spreads a crude map across it. Ink marks a broken road winding toward a black, unnamed hollow beyond the settled tracks.

Livia

Livia

I heard enough about your reputation to know better than to ask for kindness, but I don't need kindness. All I need is judgement. There is a dangerous opportunity ahead, and I intend to take it. I need to take it to avoid certain parties.

Livia

Livia

You are the only capable fighter nearby who can tell me whether I am ready. Look at me, Effruin, and tell me if I will survive what waits there.

She stands before Effruin and waits without lowering her gaze. The common room bustles around them, oblivious to her request, leaving Effruin the choice of answer.

“I test Livia's footing and guard before judging her readiness.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Effruin circles Livia without touching her, watching how her boots meet the floor and how readily her weight shifts. His keen senses catch the faint scrape of leather, the uneven pressure in her stance, and the guarded tension in her shoulders.

He steps in abruptly, testing her response with a sudden feint toward her open side. He moves in one, clean motion. Despite his one arm creating an imbalance in his stature and silhouette, his poise remains exact.

Livia turns with the feint rather than retreating, though her rear foot drags half a finger’s breadth. Effruin notes the mistake immediately: her guard protects the center, but leaves her vulnerable during a change of direction.

He shifts his weight again, measuring her recovery, breath, and eyes. Nothing escapes his heightened perception: she is alert and determined, but her footing and guard is not yet reliable under pressure.

Livia

Livia

Well? What do you see?

Effruin has his judgment. Livia can fight, and her guard is serviceable, but she is not ready for any real opponent who attacks anything more than her courage.

“I tell Livia of her weaknesses and strengths, those of which I observed. I think she will make for a middling adventurer.”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -1)

Effruin

Effruin

Your strengths are determination, alertness, and the courage to turn toward danger. You watch your opponent and do not freeze when tested. That's good.

Effruin

Effruin

Your weaknesses are your footing, recovery and guard. Your rear foot drags when you change direction, and your guard leaves you open near your sides while your weight shifts.

Effruin explains each judgment plainly, grounding it in the scrape of her boot, the pressure beneath her steps, and the tension visible in her shoulders. His keen senses separate resolve from reliable technique.

Effruin

Effruin

You can become an adventurer. But idiot or middling soldier can become an adventurer. You will survive lesser dangers; a skilled opponent may very well kill you.

Livia absorbs the verdict without flinching. Her jaw tightens, looking down in a mild show of embarrassment. Then, she looks up, assured once more.

Livia

Livia

Middling, then. Not doomed. Tell me what I must fix first, and I will fix it before I face what awaits me!

“I tell Livia how to fix her footwork, thinking back on Grahamin a few times as I do.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +2)

Effruin

Effruin

Set your rear foot beneath your hip before you turn. Step, plant, then shift your weight. Never let the foot drag behind you.

Effruin, despite himself, finda that he is enjoying this conversation with Livia. He provides her the correction in a compact sequence, pivoting and settling with exact balance. His keen senses track Livia’s ankle, heel, and shoulder together, catching each misalignment before it becomes a liability.

Effruin

Effruin

Grahamin used to make some of the same mistakes, back in our earlier days.

A harsher memory follows, carrying the image of Grahamin's lifeless body in a ruin realm of darkness. Effruin’s breath hitches, composure briefly disrupted, but he forces the recollection aside and keeps teaching.

Effruin

Effruin

Practice the turn without striking. Keep your weight centered, recover the rear foot immediately, and repeat until the movement requires no thought.

Livia follows the instruction across the worn floor. Her rear foot plants beneath her instead of scraping wide; her recovery tightens, and her guard remains closed through the turn.

Livia

Livia

Again. I felt the difference that time. I’ll drill it until an enemy cannot find that opening.

The lesson is complete. Livia now has a clear correction and a repeatable drill, while Effruin’s breathing settles and the memory of Grahamin recedes into the waking room.

“I tell Livia that it takes more than combat to make a good adventurer. Charm and wit might take her much further.”

SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +1)

Effruin

Effruin

It takes more to make an adventurer than competence at felling does. Charm and wit may carry you farther than a strong arm ever will.

Effruin recognizes the value of a smile offered before a blade is needed, and a clever answer before a door closes. He sincerely wants Livia to consider this herself.

Livia

Livia

So the fight begins before anyone reaches for steel. Make them like me, or make them underestimate me.

Effruin

Effruin

Both, when possible. Ask questions that make people enjoy answering. Let wit turn suspicion aside, and charm make them remember you favorably.

Livia studies her map, then the room beyond it. Effruin’s judgment has found the adventurer beneath the fighter: someone who must learn to read people as carefully as she reads a battlefield.

Livia

Livia

Then I’ll practice that too. At the next settlement, I’ll speak before I threaten, listen before I bargain, and keep steel as the last answer.

Livia

Livia

Thank you, Effruin.

“I nod to Livia and wish her good fortune in her adventures. I depart the brothel.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Effruin

Effruin

I wish you good fortune in your travels, Tiefling.

Effruin nods once, then turns from the map and the scarred table. His recovered strength carries him easily across the common room toward the brothel’s door.

Livia

Livia

And safe travels to you, Drow. I hope you don't encounter more imperial-types than you know how to handle.

Livia gathers her map and battered pack as Effruin steps outside. Pale daylight rests over the road, and damp earth replaces the common room’s smoke and ale.

The brothel door closes behind him without ceremony. Effruin stands alone beneath the washed-out sky, his path open and his attention fixed on practical miles ahead.

He leaves the roadside establishment and follows the road toward the next settlement, moving at a steady pace while the morning gathers brightness around him.

Livia

Livia

He's not near as miserable as I would have thought.
