Vesper edges deeper into the notch, blade angled down so it never scrapes the stone. The wall ahead opens into a narrow vertical shaft, black above, slick with old moisture.

They tilt their head back, measuring the climb. A faint draft slips down from the darkness, cool enough to raise gooseflesh along their arms.

Vesper

Vesper

This reaches the surface, if we can live long enough to take it.

Niven stares at the shaft, wide-eyed and silent, one hand hovering near the stone as if they can feel the danger breathing through it. Mara stays low behind them, listening to the wall.

Mara

Mara

If that thing follows, this is our only clean break.

COOL ARROW

COOL ARROW

The climb is steep, but the shaft is real.

Vesper crouches at the lip of the opening and reaches up, testing the first hold with careful fingers. Dust trickles down from above, loose and fresh, like something has passed this way before.

Go first, then Mara and Niven. I carry the child. Tell me if we need to stop, keep climbing.

Vesper nods once and moves into the shaft, planting a boot and hauling themself upward. COOL ARROW turns, braces low, and lets Niven climb onto his back.

Niven grips his shoulders hard, breath shallow but steady. Mara presses close behind, one hand on COOL ARROW's heel for balance as the stone narrows around them.

The ascent begins in silence, broken only by slipping grit and the scrape of leather on wet rock. A faint rasp stirs somewhere in the wall below, then fades under the strain of their climb.

COOL ARROW gains the first stretch of the shaft with Niven secure on his back. His shoulder catches on a rough edge, leaving a hot sting and a smear of blood on the stone.

Above them, Vesper pauses at a bend in the shaft and looks down, listening. Dust sifts from the darkness overhead, shaken loose by something unseen moving farther up.

Mara glances up, jaw tight, then signals for them to keep climbing. The shaft swallows their voices, and the only answer is the cold draft from above.

Quest Complete

Protect Niven

We keep climbing and mara keeps lessening to the stones and we finally make it top side

The shaft narrows hard under their weight. COOL ARROW reaches, slips, and catches himself on the stone, but the pause jolts Niven and grinds Mara’s shoulder against the wall behind them.

Dust pours down in a gray ribbon. Vesper freezes above, listening, while the cold draft from the top turns sharp and thin, just out of reach.

COOL ARROW pushes again, but the climb stalls in a cramped knot of limbs and stone. Niven clings tighter, and Mara has to flatten herself against the wall to keep from slipping.

A wet rasp answers from below the notch, nearer now, then gone. The sound leaves the shaft feeling smaller, like something has found the same route they have.

Vesper

Vesper

Hold there. I need space to clear the jam, or we all slide back.

Mara

Mara

We cannot keep forcing it. Move carefully, or pull Niven up first.

Above them, the opening remains unseen and close, while grit keeps raining into COOL ARROW’s eyes.

We keep climbing and mara keeps lessening to the stones and we finally make it top side

COOL ARROW drives upward, boots finding new purchase where the stone widens. Niven stays locked against his back, and the shaft finally gives him room to climb instead of fight.

Mara shifts lower, palms and knees against the rock, easing the pressure from behind as Vesper holds above and scans the opening. The jam loosens with a gritty slide.

Dust sifts past their faces, but the cold draft turns stronger now, pulling from overhead like a hand at the surface.

One last heave carries COOL ARROW’s shoulder past the lip. His hands catch daylight stone, and the climb stops being a climb.

Vesper

Vesper

Up. I have the edge.

Niven scrambles free first, then Mara hauls herself into the light behind COOL ARROW. Below them, the shaft swallows the wet rasping sound again, far less certain than before.

The group spills onto the surface in a rough crouch, breathless and dirt-streaked, with the opening yawning beneath them and the path ahead still unknown.

COOL ARROW

Which way do we go, and is anyone hungry or hurt?

The group stays crouched at the hole, the dark shaft at their backs and open air around their shoulders. For a moment, nobody rushes to move.

Mara

Mara

Food later. Pain now, maybe. I am scraped, but walking.

Vesper

Vesper

North if the ground is honest, west if we want cover. I vote cover.

Niven

Niven

I know a path. Not safe, just less watched.

Niven points through the pale grass toward a low line of rocks, while Mara flexes her hands and winces once, then hides it.

Mara

Mara

We can share what is left from the satchel pack. Enough to keep moving.

Vesper

Vesper

And if we rest, it is there, not here. This ground feels too open.

Behind them, a loose trickle of dust slides from the shaft lip. Far below, the wet rasping sound answers once, faint as a swallowed breath.

✓ Quest Accepted

Choose a safe route from the shaft rim

Ok let me see that mara patch her up and then we will move fast therapy niven says if everyone can run if not we will take cover and try it that way

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +0)

COOL ARROW kneels beside Mara and inspects the scrape with a quick, practiced look. He takes the torn cloth, presses it into place, and checks that her grip stays steady.

Mara lets him work, jaw tight, then tests her hand once and nods when the pain holds quiet.

Mara

Mara

That will do. I can run.

Niven

Niven

Then the rock line. If we need cover, there is a dip behind it.

Vesper looks from the open grass to the low stones and gives one short, approving breath, already shifting into motion.

Vesper

Vesper

Good. We move fast, and we do not linger at the lip.

Dust slips again from the shaft behind them. The faint wet rasp answers from below, just once, while the group turns toward the rocks.
