The tunnel narrows to a throat of stone. COOL ARROW reaches the split and stops, the satchel pressed hard to his side. Behind them, the scraping thud comes again, closer now, measured and heavy.

This way leads to water. The other way goes up. Fast.

The Child points at the dark, flooded passage. Mara braces one hand on the wall, breathing hard, while Vesper stares up at the steep climb, where loose shale hangs like broken teeth.

Mara

Mara

The climb will slow it, if it can climb. But one slip and we fall loud.

Vesper

And the water path may carry us right into the river. Or into something waiting there.

A deeper удар rolls through the stone, and dust sifts down in a gray curtain. The child edges closer to COOL ARROW, eyes wide on the satchel, while the dark passage breathes cold air at their boots.

COOL ARROW

COOL ARROW

The water passage is the quickest route out.

The choice hangs open for one hard breath, then the thudding grows nearer, forcing the group to move before the tunnel behind them opens to whatever is hunting them.

COOL ARROW drops to one knee at the split and drags free a fistful of loose shale. He wedges it into the narrow gap behind the group, then shoves a flat stone over it, trying to seal the tunnel’s throat before the thing can push through.

COOL ARROW

COOL ARROW

The stone is damp. It may hold for one hit, not more.

The first shove bites. Dust bursts from the seam, and the passage coughs out a thin, cold draft from the river side.

Then the floor shivers. The packed shale slips instead of locking, and the partial collapse slumps crookedly, leaving a jagged gap wide enough for sound to pass through.

The Child

The Child

It is not sealed. Listen.

Everyone freezes. From the flooded branch comes a low wash of moving water, but beneath it, farther off, there is no splash, no scrape, only a hollow silence that makes the dark feel deeper.

Mara

Mara

That silence is wrong. But the water is moving clean, away from here.

The busted barrier buys distance, not safety. The passage to the river opens as a usable exit, yet the tunnel behind them stays alive with that unseen, patient noise, forcing the next choice down the flooded branch.

Set a trap that collapses the tunnel on what ever is coming and lesson to see if the river is clear or a trap

COOL ARROW slips a wedge of shale into the split and shifts his weight. The stones groan, then give, and the loose face of the tunnel tears inward with a dull roar.

Dust billows through the gap. The crooked collapse slams down harder, choking the opening and swallowing the shape of whatever was pressing behind it.

From the river branch, cold water keeps moving. COOL ARROW stills, listening through the hush for splash, scrape, or breath.

COOL ARROW

COOL ARROW

The water is running clean. No noise with it.

The Child

That takes the path behind us. If something was following, it is boxed in.

Mara

And if the river branch carries a trap, we hear it now. Move quiet, all of you.

The pressure in the tunnel shifts. With the rear sealed and the flooded passage open, the group has a single way forward, and the unseen threat is forced to answer from behind or let them go.

COOL ARROW leaves Hidden grotto path behind and arrives at town.

We move forward quietly and lessening for any noise. And we take the river as far dawn stream then go left to the next town

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

The tunnel gives way to a cramped riverside lane, wet cobbles shining under a thin seam of dawn. COOL ARROW eases the group out beneath a leaning stone wall, keeping the child tucked close as the dark mouth behind them recedes into mist.

Water runs beside the lane in a narrow cut, quick and cold, carrying the smell of mud and reeds. The satchel against COOL ARROW’s side gives a faint violet throb under the salt crust, then settles.

The Child

This way reaches the river road, if the current stays on our left.

Mara points low ahead, where a covered bridge spans the black water. Vesper checks the alleys, then slips to the rear, listening for anything that follows the path out of the grotto.

COOL ARROW

COOL ARROW

We keep to the water and take the left road at dawn.

Mara

Mara

Quietly, then. The town is waking, and waking things notice.

A cart wheel creaks somewhere beyond the bend, and a dim lantern swings behind shuttered boards. The group moves on together along the river edge, out of the tunnel’s shadow and into the town’s first light.
