The river bucks under the gate’s white-gold blaze. Across the water, the far-bank shadows step into the shallows, their forms thickening as they cross.
Vesper draws a blade and plants themself between the bank and the Child. Mara keeps one hand on the ring, jaw tight, while COOL ARROW turns toward the first shapes reaching the veil.
The lead shadow hits the ward-salt boundary and hisses, its outline snapping into something human enough to strike. Two more press in behind it, silent and relentless.

COOL ARROW
The gate is open. If they break through here, the trail to the bloodline is lost.
COOL ARROW raises his bow to shield the Child as the river glare throws the attackers into stark relief, revealing the next rush coming straight for the ring.
Behind him, the Child stays locked to the seal, the only thing holding the path to their lineage open while the cruel lord’s force closes in.

“I star and say out load maybe its part of this but just in case put the satchel in the hole”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -1)

COOL ARROW lowers the bow just enough to guide the satchel toward the gate’s center. The stone ring answers with a deeper hum, and the open slot drinks in the bundle as if it has been waiting.

COOL ARROW
Put the satchel in the hole.
The Child flinches as the satchel slides into place, and the runes around it flare from white-gold to a colder, steadier fire. The river’s strain eases for a breath, then surges again as the far bank stirs.

Mara
It fits. That is not a lock, it is a receptacle.
A sheet of light spills through the opening, and within it COOL ARROW catches a glimpse of a carved line, a blood-marked channel running inland from the river. The shadow-forms hesitate, as if the gate has shown its teeth.

Vesper
Then that is what they want. Hold it open long enough to see where it leads.
The Child’s hands tremble against the blazing stone, breath coming hard. The ward-salt veil thins at the edges, and the first shadow to the near bank lifts its head toward the revealed path.
The river hushes for a heartbeat, exposed and waiting, as the gate keeps burning and the answer inside it starts to form.
“Oa hell with it its a partial everyone in let's go”
SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled +1)

COOL ARROW lunges forward, shoulder low, and catches the Child before their weight slips from the glowing stone. Mara grabs the ring’s rim and hauls with him, while Vesper plants both feet and shoves from the far side.
The gate answers with a hard flare, then opens its mouth wider. The inland line in the light steadies, and the satchel vanishes deeper into the seal as if pulled by a hidden tide.
One by one, they spill through, COOL ARROW first with the Child tight at his side. The air beyond the ring is colder, dry, and steeped in stone dust.
Behind them, the ward-salt veil snaps thin. The riverbank blurs in the opening light, and the shadow-forms hit the fading boundary just as the last body clears.
The crossing holds. No one is left at the waterline, but all of them stagger, breathing hard, knees bent, hands shaking from the strain.

Mara
Move. Do not stop here.
Beyond the ring, a narrow passage drops inland, its walls cut with old grooves and a damp sheen of age. Somewhere ahead, the route waits, while the gate behind them burns itself quiet.

Explore the hidden crawlspace
undefined / undefined

The passage answers their staggered silence with a low, grinding click. Behind them, the ring dims to a thin, cold seam, and the stone dust at its base begins to slide inward, as if something has unlatch-ed the wall from the other side.
A narrow slit opens in the left wall, not a door but a crawlspace cut through older stone. From within comes the dry whisper of leather and the faint scent of river mud, wrong for a sealed passage. The sound of that hidden movement cuts through their relief.

Mara
Stay back. That was not there a moment ago.
Vesper turns with their blade half-raised, and the Child lifts the satchel instinctively toward their chest, only for a dull pulse to answer from deeper in the dark. Something inside the new opening has recognized the bloodline gate.

Niven
The stone is moving on its own.

Investigate the source of the shadow-forms
“Take whatever in the satchel out and wear and put it on the boy and keep moving forward”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +1)

COOL ARROW reaches into the satchel and draws out the hidden charm, its surface dull with old dust and river-salt. He turns it once, then fits it onto the Child with careful hands as the passage listens around them.

COOL ARROW
It is lighter than it looked.
The charm settles against the Child’s gear and gives off a brief, low thrum, then quiets. The bloodline gate behind them fades to a thin seam of light, as if satisfied for the moment.

Niven
It recognizes me. I can feel it.
Mara lowers her hand a little, still watching the crawlspace. Vesper keeps the blade up, but their stance loosens when the pulse does not deepen.

Mara
Good. Then we move before whatever is in there decides to come out.
The Child steps forward with the charm secured, and the group edges toward the dark passage ahead. The crawlspace waits at their left, open and silent, while something deeper inside gives one soft, uncertain scrape.
“I tell the group let's open all the satchel and we all put what ever is in it on and we face whatever ahead together let's not be afraid and face this together”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +2)

COOL ARROW gathers the satchel and opens it flat between them. Inside, a few small relics rest in cloth, and the passage seems to hold its breath while everyone leans in.

COOL ARROW
Let us all take what we need, and face what waits ahead together.
Mara kneels at once, choosing carefully instead of rushing. Vesper lowers the blade a fraction and studies the contents with tired eyes, while the Child watches COOL ARROW and then the satchel, reverent and wary at once.

Mara
No more secrets if we can help it. Shared hands, shared burden.

Niven
Then the charm stays with me. If it knows my blood, it should answer me first.
They each claim a piece, and the last of the satchel's hidden weight is divided among them. The gate behind them thins to a faint seam, and the crawlspace keeps its dark mouth open to the left.

Vesper
If we are walking into old stone and older blood, better we do it as one group than as prey.
“Yes I agree. Mara do you now any magic and do you have the bow i gave you let's get ready for whatever is ahead”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +0)

COOL ARROW
Yes. Mara, do you know any magic, and do you still have the bow I gave you? We should be ready for whatever comes next.

Mara
A little. Not the bright sort, but enough to read a ward, steady a charm, and tell when stone is lying. And yes, I have your bow.

Mara
She shifts the bow to her left hand, testing the grip with a quick, practiced nod. The old bow no longer looks decorative in her hands, it looks claimed.

Vesper
That is better than nothing. Magic, a bow, and all of us still upright, I will take that bargain.

Niven
If Mara can feel wards, then she should stay close to the gate. I do not trust that seam to stay quiet forever.
Mara glances toward the dim seam in the wall, then back to COOL ARROW with a steadier look. The Child keeps the hidden charm against their chest, while the open crawlspace breathes cold earth from the left wall.

Mara
We move as one, then. You watch the passage, I watch the old stone, and if the dark wants to speak, I will hear it first.
“That's a good idea. Vesper the same for you what do you have to defend us. And boy what else can you do need to now so I can plan the way we move forward from here no more mistakes”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +0)

COOL ARROW
That helps. Vesper, what do you have to defend us, and what else can you do so I can plan our way forward?

Vesper
I can hold a line, cut a path, and hear a bad shape before it fully enters a room. If the passage narrows, I am useful. If it widens, I am still stubborn.

Niven
I can feel the gate, and I can tell when the satchel is waking again. I am not as strong as Mara, but I know the old places, and I know when stone is pretending.

Mara
I can read wards, spot false stone, and keep a charm quiet long enough for us to pass. If you need a blade, I still have that too.
The child shifts the charm from one hand to the other, then rests it against the satchel. Vesper eases their shoulders and glances down the passage, while Mara keeps the bow close and watches the dim seam in the wall.

Vesper
So, protector, you have three tools at hand now, maybe four if you count my nerves. Ask plain, and I will answer plain.

Niven
And if you want to know where we should move next, I can tell you where the old paths breathe best.
“Ok child whats your name I never asked. And yes lead us to safety and a place to rest and eat”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -1)

COOL ARROW
What is your name? I never asked. And if you know the old paths, lead us to somewhere safe to rest and eat.

Niven
I... I can do that. I am Niven.

Vesper
A good name. I will remember it.

Mara
Then we move as soon as you point the way, Niven. I can help with wards and keep watch while we stop.

Niven
There is a warm niche ahead, where the stone sweats less and the floor stays dry. Food too, if we still have the wrapped bread.
Niven tucks the charm back against the satchel and looks to COOL ARROW for a beat, then to the passage ahead. Vesper shifts in closer beside them, protective now in a quieter way, while Mara tests the air with a wary glance and lowers the bow a fraction.

Vesper
If we go now, I can guide the turn. Ask plain, and I will walk first.
“Very will let's move Vesper take the lead and stick to the shadows to help keep you safe”
FAILURE (Fair Stealth, rolled -2)

COOL ARROW
Very well, let us move. Vesper, take the lead, and we stick to the shadows.
Vesper slips ahead into the dimmer strip of the passage, but the floor gives them away with a dry whisper of grit. The sound travels farther than it should, and every head turns toward the crawlspace behind them.
COOL ARROW follows at once, keeping close to the wall, yet the hidden seam of the crawlspace catches the movement and breathes colder air in reply. The faint light at the gate seam flickers once, as if something inside the stone has noticed their departure.
Mara stops short and raises her free hand, signaling silence. Niven tightens their hold on the charm and glances back at the dark opening, where a wet scrape answers from within.
Vesper reaches the bend first and presses themself flat to the rock, looking back with a tense, practical nod. A narrow side notch opens beside the passage, half hidden by shadow and old stone, just wide enough for one person to crouch through.
The group has not reached rest yet, but the failure leaves a usable opening, a cramped hiding place off the main passage. The crawlspace remains open behind them, and whatever stirs in it seems to be listening.
“Very will let's move Vesper take the lead do as niven says and stick to the shadows to help keep you safe”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +0)
COOL ARROW slips in behind Vesper, and the whole group folds into the shadowed line of the passage without another scrape. Niven leads with careful steps, and the narrow side notch swallows the chill of them like a mouth.
The crawlspace is there now, a cramped slit in old stone, low enough to force a crouch and close enough to the main passage to hear the river pulse far behind them. The gate seam fades to a thin thread of light.
Mara ducks first, bow held close to her ribs, then pauses and looks back. Her expression says the space can hold them, if only for a breath.

Niven
In here. Quietly.
Vesper lowers themself into the notch beside Niven, blade angled down so it will not catch the stone. Dust falls from the lintel as their shoulder brushes through.

COOL ARROW
Very well, I move with you.
COOL ARROW follows into the cramped offshoot, and the last of the passage air brushes his back. His boot dislodges a pebble, and it ticks once against the floor behind him.
The hidden crawlspace takes them all the way in, then seals the view of the main passage with a bend of dark stone. Ahead, only a low pocket of shelter remains, and from somewhere deeper in the wall comes a faint wet rasp, listening.
