Tracy’s fingers close on the marked slats before the runner can kick them away. Mud sucks at her knees. The satchel lies open, and the spilled packet shows stamped symbols like a warning no one wanted found.

Back off! That stays here!

He slashes the shiv toward her hand, but hesitates when Thomas barrels into view through the scrap-strewn haze. The runner’s eyes keep darting, not to Tracy, but to the cargo and the road to the salt works.

The packet came from the port. The symbols match the facility warning.

Tracy, move. I’ve got the runner.

Thomas plants himself between the runner and the lane, broad shoulders squared. The hesitation breaks the standoff, just enough for Tracy to see the truth of it, this was never simple freight. It is a lead, and it is heading straight for the salt works.

You don’t understand what’s in there. Drop it and walk away!

Tracy reaches for the runner’s mind, and it gives way hard. His fear flashes open, the salt works, the buried facility, the warning symbols, all of it spilling through her grip like torn wire.

Then the useful parts come free. Hidden routes. A dead drop chain. The name of the place below the works, and the people who use it to move bodies and records.

The runner convulses, slackening in Thomas’s hold as the rest of his thoughts break apart. His gaze goes blank, the shiv dropping from fingers that no longer seem to know why they were raised.

No, no, no... not that door, not the lower tanks, not the woman with the ledger...

In the mud beside him, the warning-tagged packet lies open and suddenly ordinary, just paper and grime now that the secret inside has been ripped loose.

Tracy. Is it in your head now?

The runner’s knees fold. Thomas tightens his grip, staring down at the ruined man, while the lane around them stays tense and listening.
