As Hamann crosses the threshold, a deep vibration travels through the carved floor. Dust trembles from the pillars, and the Stone Sentinel turns toward the Inquisitor.

The title echoes up the stair in a dead liturgical form, one preserved only in fragments of ancient religious records. The Stranger searches the darkness below.

The insignia on the Inquisitor’s breast begins to glow against the stone, answering something beneath the stair. The light paints his face a sickly gold.

The Stone Sentinel blocks the Inquisitor’s advance with one stony arm. Behind Hamann, the forest has gone silent; ahead, the stair descends into a darkness now listening for him.

Hamann watches the Inquisitor rather than the glowing insignia. The man’s authority drains from his posture as the Stone Sentinel bars him, leaving calculation where certainty stood.

The Inquisitor’s fingers hover near his sword, but he does not draw. His eyes move from the Sentinel’s stone arm to the vault’s descending dark, measuring both as threats he cannot command.

The Sentinel does not move. The insignia’s sickly glow gutters across its carved face, and the vault answers with a deeper pulse that makes the Inquisitor recoil.

Hamann catches the truth in the Inquisitor’s reaction: recognition, followed by fear carefully hidden beneath anger. The observation costs him a sharp ache behind his eyes as the buried voice presses closer.

At the bottom, the passage opens into a vast chamber cut through the hill. Pillars lean over a sunken floor, their carvings brightening as Hamann enters.

Behind Hamann, the stair seals with a deep settling groan. Ahead, the earth parts around a black stone dais, revealing an ancient doorway and a narrow path descending beyond it.

Hamann approaches the black stone dais and runs his uninjured fingers over the brightening carvings. Their angles resolve into an ancient liturgical script, preserved beneath dust and silence.

He reads the first band as a dedication to the Buried Name, then follows the lower spirals: the vault was raised before the Ashen Covenant and sealed by the First Witness.

The central carvings describe a buried road beneath the hill, designed to preserve forbidden names and carry chosen keepers through the earth. The black dais marks its threshold.

A final line brightens beneath Hamann’s hand. It identifies the Keeper not as a servant of the Covenant, but as a witness entrusted to judge what the buried chambers preserve.

The ancient doorway answers with a low stone click. Its carvings are no longer obscure: they name Hamann’s passage as permitted, and the narrow descent beyond the dais lies open.
