Beyond the open gate, the road narrows under wet pines. Hamann and the blacksmith take only a few steps before a figure slips from behind a thick trunk, fur-clad and breathless.

The Stranger
Blacksmith. Don’t go straight on.
He keeps his voice low and jabs a finger toward the road ahead, where the mist hangs heavy between the trees.

The Stranger
The Inquisitor’s men are out there, checking every rider, every cart. They are tearing the road apart.

The Blacksmith
You are certain?

The Stranger
Certain enough to hide in the trees. They know the fort has let someone through.
The blacksmith glances to Hamann, then back to the stranger, while the pine branches drip cold rain over all three of them.

Warn the blacksmith’s family of the patrols
“We'll cut through the forest. Follow me. If something happens to me keep going.”
FAILURE (Mediocre Survival, rolled -1)

Hamann points off the road, toward the darker line of pines. The blacksmith turns with him, already reading the choice in his face.

Hamann
We cut through the forest. Follow me. If something happens to me, keep going.
The blacksmith nods once, grim resolve settling over his features as he steps toward the trees beside Hamann.
For a few paces the ground seems willing, then the wet needles and hidden roots catch hard at their boots. The line they make bends apart instead of straightening.
Hamann pushes on, but the forest swallows the cleaner trail he wants. The blacksmith lags a step, looking back toward the road and then deeper into the brush, uncertain which way is safer now.

The Blacksmith
The road is watched. The woods may be worse.
Rain thickens under the branches. Behind them, the gate and road are still open, and ahead the pines close into shadow, forcing the next decision onto silence.
“See if a forest spirit can guide us to a place to hide.”
FAILURE (Fair Arcana, rolled -2)

Hamann closes his eyes and lets the wet ground and needles fall away. He reaches for the old, patient pulse under roots and stone, asking for shelter, for a hidden place that will hold two men until the patrol passes.
The forest answers with pressure, not words. A hush moves through the pines, then slips aside, showing him only tangled brush, a steep bank, and no clear hand to guide them farther.

Hamann
No spirit comes close enough to trust.
The blacksmith sees the change in Hamann’s face and follows his gaze to the raw slope ahead. He tightens his jaw, the earlier grim resolve hardening into something flatter and more practical.

The Blacksmith
Then we hide where we can make it ourselves.
A gust rattles the branches behind them. Through the rain, a faint call drifts from the road, still too distant to catch them, but near enough to warn that the choice cannot wait.
Hamann stands at the edge of the brush with no clear blessing in hand, only the woods, the mud, and the blacksmith looking to him for the next move.
“How many men on the patrol?”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

Hamann lets his attention slide past the trees and count the road by sound. The patrol is not a handful, but a file of six men, boots spaced tight enough to move as one.

Hamann
Six.
The blacksmith’s head turns toward the road, then back to Hamann, the number settling the fear into something colder and more useful.

The Blacksmith
Six, then. Enough to search the road, not enough to spread out far in these trees.
Rain clicks on the needles overhead. The blacksmith shifts his weight toward the deeper pines, already dividing the woods into routes and dead ends.

The Blacksmith
If they keep to the road, my family has a little time. If they leave the road, we need to move now.
The count hangs between them like a held breath, and the forest stays silent, waiting for Hamann to decide whether that warning goes farther than the two of them.
“Hide in the woods. Ask wind spirits to confuse the soldiers.”
SUCCESS (Fair Arcana, rolled +1)

Hamann sinks lower among the roots and wet needles. He cups the air, then lets the forest take the shape of a corridor around them, the wind stirring where it should not.
A thin gust slips between the pines and carries their scent aside. It worries the rain into a hiss, then veils the two figures behind a curtain of moving branches.

Hamann
The trail is broken by the wind.
The blacksmith watches the road, then the trees, and gives a hard nod. He takes Hamann’s lead, folding himself into the shadow of a trunk.

The Blacksmith
That should make them look past us. My family needs the warning if this goes wrong.
The spell answers, but it costs Hamann a sharp pulse behind the eyes, and the nearest pine sheds a spray of needles as if something unseen has brushed past it. The road lies hidden now, yet the patrol is still moving.
From beyond the trees, a voice calls for the line to keep straight and check the brush. The blacksmith stiffens, waiting for Hamann to decide whether they slip away or turn back toward warning kin.
“Slip deeper into the pines in the direction of blacksmiths family”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)

Hamann glides between the pines, leaving the broken line of the trail behind. Wet branches close over him, and the blacksmith follows in his wake, stepping where the roots will take weight.
The forest thickens around them. Rain clicks soft on needles above, while the road noise thins to a murmur lost between trunks.
Ahead, a low lantern glow leaks through a screen of brush, not bright enough to belong to the road patrol. It sits back from the path, tucked into a dip in the ground.

The Blacksmith
That is my homeward side. If my wife and boy are still there, they need to hear this now.
Hamann reaches the edge of the clearing without drawing notice. The blacksmith stops beside him, breathing hard, grim resolve still set in his jaw from the cut rope and the flight after it.

The Blacksmith
Wait here if you must. I am going to them.
He slips toward the light at once, forcing the next choice into the dark between the trees.
“I ask a wind spirit to create a diversion away from the blacksmith. If this fails I'll create a diversion myself”
FAILURE (Fair Arcana, rolled -4)

Hamann lifts a hand and calls for the wind to bend aside, not toward him, but toward the blacksmith’s path. The rain ticks harder off the needles, then the air goes thin and wrong.

Hamann
The spell slips.
A gust answers anyway, sharp as a knife. It tears through the brush in a hard white rush, whipping wet branches wide and snapping a belt lantern from its hook.
The lantern strikes the ground and blooms into a bright spill of light, throwing the blacksmith’s shape into the open for a breath too long.

The Blacksmith
Hamann, move. Now.
He jerks back from the glare, one arm up against the branches, face tightened by fear and grim resolve. Voices rise from beyond the trees, not close yet, but closer than before.
The wind drops dead at once, leaving the lantern smoking in the mud and the clearing lit enough to betray them both.
“Go! I tell the blacksmith. I try to move back and get in good position for melee”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)

Hamann gives ground instead of chasing the light, sliding back into the trees where the trunks break his outline. His mace comes up in both hands, low and ready, as he sets his feet on the wet needles.

Hamann
Go. I have it.
The blacksmith hears him and moves at once, angling for the hidden dwelling. Behind them, the lantern’s smoke thins, and the voices in the woods sharpen with alarm.

The Blacksmith
If they find my home, my family dies for my delay.
Hamann’s retreat stops the moment he wants it to stop. He is no longer exposed by the clearing, but planted where he can meet anything that comes out of it.
The blacksmith reaches the shadow of the dwelling and disappears from the open, taking the warning with him. From within the trees, the patrol’s approach grates closer through brush and rain.
The blacksmith’s last glance back is grim, grateful, and afraid. He does not call out Hamann’s name, but the danger has already turned toward the house.
