The Stranger steps from the pines, one hand lifted as if he has pulled the tremor itself out of the earth. The ground is still settling when the Inquisitor slips in the mud and goes hard to one knee.

The Stranger
Look at him now. All that law, and still the forest has the louder voice.
The soldiers stagger and turn, their line breaking. Hamann’s ropes hang loose for one breath, just enough. The path to the trees lies open behind the Inquisitor’s exposed flank.

Hamann
The knot is loose.
The Inquisitor looks up, fear flashing across his face as he spots The Stranger. His grip tightens on the relic shard, but his footing is gone, and his attention is split.

The Inquisitor
You. I know what you are. Stand back.
For a heartbeat, no one guards the road. The clearing breathes in rain and pine resin, and Hamann has a clear chance to wrench free before the soldiers can close again.
✓ Quest Accepted
Escape the clearing
“Quietly loosen the binds more. Do not be visible about it”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Hamann keeps his body small in the mud, using the Inquisitor’s stumble as cover. His wrists work once, twice, and the rope gives under hidden strain.

Hamann
Loose enough.
The knot parts without a sound. The slack drops into his palms, wet and dark.
He lets the broken binding sink against his cloak instead of flinging it away, and stays half-curled beside the clearing’s edge.

The Inquisitor
Do not move.
The command lands too late. The Inquisitor is still on one knee, staring past the mud toward the Stranger, while the soldiers hesitate on the broken line.
Free now, Hamann has a dark path into the pines, but the opening is thinning as spearpoints turn back toward him.

Rope
“Nod to the stranger to intuit intent or if he is about to use some power”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

Hamann lifts his chin in the mud, a small, deliberate nod toward the Stranger.
The Stranger answers with the briefest tilt of his hand, not a spell yet, but a warning held back.
Across the clearing, the Inquisitor catches the motion and half-rises, torn between Hamann and the treeline.

The Stranger
Wait for my sign, not theirs.
The soldiers shift their footing in the mud, spearpoints wavering as the broken line closes again.
Behind them, the Blacksmith braces at the trees, ready to run the instant the opening returns.
“Wait to see what the stranger does. Be ready for his signal”
FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -4)

Hamann watches for the Stranger’s sign, but the mud and rain steal the moment. The hand that should guide the strike jerks too low, and the clearing keeps breathing without him.
The Stranger’s fingers twitch once, then vanish behind his sleeve. Whatever he means to do is hidden now, and Hamann cannot read it in time.
The Inquisitor sees only the hesitation. He plants one boot, lifts the relic shard, and the soldiers tighten around the gap before it opens.

The Inquisitor
Chain him. Now.
Iron hooks splash through the mud toward Hamann’s wrists, while the Blacksmith flinches at the tree line, caught between running and waiting.
Hamann has the trees in sight, but the line of spears is already closing there. The escape is still there, only narrower, and the next heartbeat decides whether it becomes a path or a trap.
“Bid the blacksmith to run. Strike the inquistor as hard as I can”
FAILURE (Good Strength, rolled -1)

Hamann heaves the mace up and throws his voice toward the pines, telling the Blacksmith to run. The words tear through rain and breath, and the Blacksmith lunges at once.
Hamann swings hard for the Inquisitor’s skull, but the mud steals his footing. The mace clips shoulder and relic hand instead, jolting the shard sideways and scattering the command into the trees.

The Inquisitor
Take him! Forget the blacksmith!
The soldiers overcorrect. One hook slaps into the ground where Hamann stood, and two spears jab into each other in the crush, opening a narrow seam at the edge of the cordon.
The Blacksmith breaks for the dark, half-lost behind fir trunks and rain. The Stranger stays still, watching Hamann’s missed blow with a quick, assessing tilt of the head.

The Stranger
The shard is the leash. Break his grip, not his guard.
Hamann’s strike lands short of the kill, but it has turned the Inquisitor’s attention onto himself. The opening is no longer the road, it is the relic hand, and the cordon is strained enough to break or close.
“Grab the relic hand and make him drop it”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +1)

Hamann clamps onto the Inquisitor’s relic hand and twists. The shard jerks free, flies from numb fingers, and sinks into the mud with a wet hiss.
The Inquisitor reels, suddenly bare-handed. His balance breaks as the soldiers surge, and the line around Hamann shudders open for a breath.

The Inquisitor
Seize him. Now!
Two spears lunge late, but Hamann is already moving, shouldering into the gap before it can close. Rain flashes across black cloak and mud-slick boots.

The Stranger
Go, Hamann. The trees, now.
The Blacksmith vanishes deeper between the firs, while the dropped shard lies half-swallowed in the bog behind the Inquisitor. The clearing is cracking apart, and the choice becomes flight or steel.
“I run ask the spirits of the trees to guide and create barriers behind me”
SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +1)

Hamann drives into the firs, and the ground answers him. Roots knot up behind his boots, then seize the mud in a low ridge that drinks the soldiers’ first steps.
Needles shiver overhead. The wind turns wrong, pulling branch tips together into a rough lattice that snaps spears aside and blinds the line for a heartbeat.
The Inquisitor: Stop him, before he vanishes!
Hamann reaches the dark between trunks as the barrier thickens behind him, a wall of roots, bracken, and fallen sapwood growing out of his passing.

The Stranger
Good. Keep moving.
Behind Hamann, the clearing fractures into noise and struggling feet. Ahead, the pine shadows open just enough to take him, while the blacksmith is already lost to the forest.

“Follow the trail of the blacksmith”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Survival, rolled +0)

Hamann catches the blacksmith’s trail by broken fern and heel-slick mud, moving low beneath the pines. The marks are fresh enough to trust, but each step forces a little more rainwater from his sleeve and cloak.
He follows them into darker ground, where a snapped twig and a scuff in moss confirm the direction. The cost bites at once, his cut hand reopening enough to sting and leave a thin red trace on the bark he brushes past.
Ahead, the forest opens around the hidden dwelling’s back side. A shutter stands ajar, and the blacksmith’s path hooks toward it instead of the road.

The Stranger
There. He made for the house.
From the clearing edge, the Inquisitor regains his footing, staring after Hamann through the wavering root wall. His soldiers gather behind him, slowed but not broken.

The Inquisitor
Do not let him vanish into the trees!
The blacksmith’s trail ends at the dwelling wall, where muddy handprints smear the boards. Inside, a dull movement answers the noise outside, and the next choice hangs between the door and the returning boots.
✓ Quest Accepted
Slip away into the trees
“Reach out to forest spirits conceal myself and discern the inquisitors next move”
FAILURE (Good Arcana, rolled -2)

Hamann reaches for the pine roots and the wet stone beneath them, asking the forest to hide him. The air tightens, then slips away from him, and the trees answer with only cold rain.
His cloak darkens against the bark, but not enough. Through the needles, he catches the Inquisitor’s boots shifting in the mud, one careful step after another toward the dwelling wall.
The failed charm leaves a faint shiver in the moss at Hamann’s knees, a trace anyone alert enough might notice. Yet the disturbance also pulls his eye to a narrow gap in the roots, where the Inquisitor is signaling low to his soldiers, not for a charge, but for silence.

The Inquisitor
Not the trees. Watch the door.
Hamann sees the opening plainly now, the patrol is not rushing the clearing, it is circling the house from the side he cannot see.

The Stranger
He is sending two around back.
Inside the dwelling, the dull movement stops, as if someone has heard the warning too late.
“Follow the two”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Hamann rises from the roots and slips after the pair in their own shadow, keeping to the wet dark between trunks. The muffled scrape of their boots leads him around the dwelling toward its hidden rear.
The two soldiers move single file along the wall, one pausing at a shutter, the other at the back door. Hamann closes the distance without breaking the trees’ cover.
Ahead, the rear door stands half-latched, with rain beading on the lintel. A faint breath of lamplight leaks through the seam.

The Stranger
Now. If they open it, the room will hear you.
One soldier reaches for the latch. The other glances over his shoulder, uneasy, as if he has felt the forest tighten behind him.
Hamann is already at their backs, in the broken shelter of the pines beside the door.

The Inquisitor
Hold there. Someone is moving behind us.
