The Inquisitor takes one slow step forward, eyes fixed past Hamann into the pines. The ground answers with a low, rhythmic shudder, as if something vast is walking beneath the roots.

The Inquisitor
Hold. Do not move.
He raises one hand, not toward Hamann, but toward the forest. The sheathed sword at his hip stays untouched, his jaw tightening as the groan in the trees deepens.

The Stranger
That is no patrol sound.
Hamann stands between the Inquisitor and the trembling woods while the vibration crawls through the clearing. Needles rain down in short, dry bursts from the shaking branches.

The Inquisitor
Whatever stirs there, it was drawn by your hand.
The Stranger shifts back a pace, pale and wary, staring into the dark between trunks as the unseen rhythm keeps time, nearer now than before.
✓ Quest Accepted
Survive the thing stirring under the roots
“Try to determine what the unseen force is”
SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled -2)

Hamann lets the tremor run through his bones and reads the pulse in the roots. It is not a patrol, not a beast aboveground. Something old and buried is moving under the clearing, stirring stone and rot alike.

Hamann
Old earth. Not hunting, waking.
The answer comes with a sting. The pressure of the power slides off his focus, and a sharp ache bites behind his eyes as the wet mud at his boots gives a small, warning suck.

The Inquisitor
Speak plainly. What is it?
Hamann sees it then, a great buried mass shifting the whole wood by inches, as if the forest floor itself has been turned to a skin over something vast. The hidden force is beneath them, and it is coming up.

The Stranger
Roots do not shake like that on their own. Something is forcing its way through.
The Inquisitor lowers his hand a fraction, the soldiers forgotten for one uneasy breath as all three of them listen to the groan in the dark.
“Try to see if the inquisitor or the stranger is connected to it”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Hamann lets his gaze slide from the trembling roots to the two men beside him. The Inquisitor stands rigid, but the vibration does not answer his authority. The Stranger, half-crouched and watchful, is the same. Neither carries the pulse. The shaking belongs below them.

Hamann
Not them. The ground is the source.
The forest answers with a deeper shudder. Needles rain from the boughs. Beyond the hidden clearing, the buried weight rolls once under the soil, and the pine trunks bend together with a creak like clenched teeth.

The Inquisitor
Then we stop staring at each other and listen. Can you tell how near it is?

The Stranger
Too near for comfort. It is under the roots by the clearing, not in the trees.
Hamann sees it clearly now, the men are not the source, only witnesses. The threat is old stone and buried force, swelling up beneath the forest floor, while the soldiers beyond the frame remain forgotten for this tense breath.
The tremor swells again, hard enough to rattle loose bark from the nearest trunk, and both men wait for Hamann’s judgment.
“I try to connect with it”
SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +1)

Hamann reaches past fear and listens with his gift, not to the men, but to the buried pulse under the roots.

Hamann
It is not a beast. It is a waking seam of old stone.
The tremor answers him. The soil tightens into a pattern, slow and deliberate, like a hand turning in sleep beneath the forest floor.

The Stranger
You feel it too. Good. Then tell us what is coming up.

The Inquisitor
Speak plainly, Hamann. Is this a threat we can meet, or one we must flee?
Hamann’s certainty lands. The force below is alive to his calling, vast and patient, and the shaking in the clearing is no random quake. The forest is being opened from beneath.
The Inquisitor lowers his hand from the line of spearpoints beyond the frame and turns toward the roots instead. For the first time, he looks to Hamann for guidance.
“The ground is opening the forest is about to break itself apart”
FAILURE (Great Arcana, rolled -3)

Hamann starts to shape the warning, but the ground steals the breath from it. The tremor lurches into a hard, sickening crack beneath the roots.

Hamann
The seam is breaking open.
A line of soil splits near their feet. Fine roots whip upward, and the forest floor sags as if something hollow has opened below.

The Stranger
Back. Now.

The Inquisitor
Hamann, answer me. Is this collapsing ground or some spell?
Hamann’s warning comes too late to prevent the danger, but not too late to name it. The clearing shudders into a shallow sink, forcing the three of them to shift their footing as the roots pull tight.
The immediate chase is gone. All that remains is a broken patch of forest floor, a widening split, and the awful need to decide whether to move together or be swallowed separately.
“Call everyone to move away from the crack”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

Hamann’s order cuts through the shaking trees. The Inquisitor snatches his footing back and stumbles clear of the crack, while The Stranger drags himself to safer ground beside him.

The Inquisitor
Enough. Move away from it.
They obey at once, not because they trust each other, but because the earth keeps dropping. The split widens into a dark seam, and loose needles spill down into it.

The Stranger
This is no collapse. It is opening.
Hamann gets them clear of the lip before the next shudder can take one of them. The immediate threat underfoot is behind them now, though the forest still groans.

The Inquisitor
He has the right of it. Stand down, and watch the ground.
For a breath, the soldiers are forgotten. The three men hold a rough triangle around the widening wound, bound together by the same fear and the same need to survive.
“Call to the forest spirits to give the soldiers branches to hold onto”
SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +0)

Hamann kneels to the trembling earth and lets his will sink past root and stone. The forest answers in a low shudder, and the nearby branches bend together with a creak of living wood.
Thick limbs slide down within reach of the soldiers on the far side of the tremor, as if the pines themselves are offering handholds. Needles rain over the mud in a soft, sudden shower.

The Inquisitor
A gift from the woods. Take it.
The Inquisitor grabs for one branch, then another, steadying himself where the ground still flexes. His soldiers, half-seen beyond the seam, catch at the timber and stop their slide.

The Stranger
Hold fast. It wants us rooted in place.
The forest keeps them from falling, but it also binds them there, all of them forced to watch the crack breathe underfoot.
For one uneasy breath, Hamann, the Inquisitor, and the Stranger stand in the same danger, each relying on the other to stay above the opening earth.
“I try and discern the source of the disturbance”
SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +3)

Hamann presses his palm to the shivering seam and reads the rhythm beneath it. Not beast, not flood. A buried shelf of stone is rolling over another, slow as a waking giant.

Hamann
A stone ridge is shifting under the roots.
The tremor answers him with a hard jolt. The opening widens, and a dark tongue of earth lifts from below, levering old roots aside and exposing a pale line of broken rock.

The Inquisitor
What is it?
Hamann’s insight lands cleanly. The disturbance is a fault seam tearing loose, and something deeper is pushing it open. In the split earth, a sliver of worked stone flashes once, carved with ancient grooves.

The Stranger
That is no simple collapse. It is a passage being forced awake.
The roots above the crack sag into a rough arch, making a low tunnel where the forest floor has broken away. The soldiers stop looking at Hamann and stare into the newly opened dark instead.
“What's going on with the blacksmith?”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -3)

Hamann reads the vibration through the stone and answers the question without looking up. The blacksmith is alive, moving, and not in the dwelling. He has gone farther under the trees, away from the hidden house and the patrol.

The Inquisitor
Then where did he run?
A second shudder rolls through the roots. The low tunnel breathes dust into the clearing, and the Inquisitor flinches as if the ground itself has named a winner. Somewhere behind the trees, a shouted curse cuts off hard.

Hamann
The blacksmith is no longer in the house.
Hamann catches one more impression from the earth, enough to place the man by his heartbeat and the drag of his injured step. The blacksmith is headed toward the darker side of the forest, still under strain but no longer trapped with the soldiers.

The Stranger
He made it out. For now.
The answer lands at a cost. The seam bucks under Hamann’s hand, and a spray of grit slices his palm open again. The root arch above the fissure creaks, warning all three men that the underground passage is still waking.

The Inquisitor
If he lives, we move. If he falls, we listen for him.
“Try to think if I know anything about the history of this region or any old structured near here”
SUCCESS (Great Ancient religions, rolled -2)

Hamann lets the vibration run through his hand and memory. This seam is old, older than the fort, older than the forest road. He knows the mark of a cut-stone passage, a burial work, or a hidden undercroft sealed with earth rites, the sort built where miners once feared the deep gods.

Hamann
A forgotten foundation. Not a beast’s burrow.
The tremor gives him a second shape to the place. The opening is not random collapse, it follows a straight worked line under the roots, a ruin laid in the bones of the hill.

The Inquisitor
Then speak plainly, or we stand here blind.
Dust sifts harder from the arch above them. Hamann’s reopened palm burns, and the grit in the wound makes the knowledge come with pain.

The Stranger
If it is a hall, it was sealed for a reason. Old roads do not wake without a price.
Below the roots, the tunnel exhales again, and a buried slab answers with a slow, grinding shift, as if something inside has heard them.
“"This opened for a reason. Let's investigate."”
SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled -1)

Hamann lets the old pattern settle in his mind, and the grinding slab answers it. The tunnel is real, worked by hands, not roots. He traces the seam’s purpose in a glance and finds the hidden way: a sealed undercroft, opened by the quake, waiting for a living step.

Hamann
This opened for a reason. Let’s investigate.
At once, the broken arch below the roots loosens farther. The earth gives up a narrow stair cut into wet stone, and the dark beyond breathes cold air over the mud.

The Inquisitor
Then move carefully. If this is a hall, it is no natural one.

The Stranger
It was buried to stay buried. But now it is choosing.
Hamann sees the first carved edge clearly, old chisel marks slick with age. The opening is no longer a wound in the forest floor, but a passage.
The tremor eases, leaving the trio standing over the revealed stair, with the buried dark inviting a descent neither man can yet refuse.
