Scouts Climb Toward the Shrine
Lunaris
Lunaris

The hidden trail climbs between immense redwoods toward a stone shrine half-swallowed by moss. Fresh ash marks the steps, and Covenant cord binds the lower branches in warning.

Umbralia and Lunaris reach the shrine alone, leaving Garran at the gate while Sable, Maelin, Ordan, and Rusk remain with the refuge. The forest below lies quiet.

Inside the roofless shrine, copied maps cover the altar stones. Charcoal lines trace the watch trail around the refuge, while bundled signal flares rest beside a cold bronze brazier.

One map shows a route descending behind the eastern barrier and circling toward the lodge’s rear wall. Fresh ash dusts its edges, as if someone recently planned the approach.

Lunaris

Lunaris

They mapped every blind side. If scouts reach this shrine, they can signal the road without ever exposing themselves to the gate.

Lunaris lowers his silver head and listens. Far below, a twig snaps once, then another answers from higher on the slope. The sounds are measured, not animal.

Lunaris

Lunaris

Someone is climbing. More than one. We have moments to decide whether to hide, watch, or warn the refuge.

Stop the Covenant climbers from signaling the road

“I gather the copied maps and keep them beneath my wing. I say "lunaris, cut them down"”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

Scouts Climb Toward the Shrine

Umbralia gathers the copied maps from the altar and tucks them beneath her wing, securing the bundle against her side. The bronze brazier remains cold.

umbralia

umbralia

Lunaris, cut them down.

Lunaris launches from the shrine roof, silver wings striking the air once. He drops toward the measured footsteps as two Covenant climbers crest the lower steps.

His talons and wingbeats break their ascent. One climber is thrown against the mossy stones, while the other falls silent beneath the redwoods. Neither reaches the shrine.

Lunaris

Lunaris

They are down. But the shrine heard us, and their signal flares are scattered across the steps.

A flare strikes the stone and bursts into harsh red sparks, staining the roofless shrine and surrounding trunks. Far below, answering horns stir near the refuge.

Lunaris

Lunaris

The maps are safe, but the Covenant knows our position now. We must move before the next climbers arrive.

Umbralia secures the maps beneath her wing and launches from the shrine steps. Lunaris follows, silver wings cutting through the redwood shadows as red sparks fade behind them.

They descend swiftly along the concealed trail, passing the scattered signal flares and the fallen climbers without stopping. Below, answering horns multiply around the refuge.

Lunaris

Lunaris

The Covenant has sounded an alarm, but their climbers did not reach the shrine. We can still reach the lodge before they close the trail.

Umbralia and Lunaris burst from the trees above the eastern barrier and land beneath the antler-crowned gate. Frost scatters beneath their talons as Garran turns toward them.

Garran Vey

Garran Vey

You are back. The horns began moments ago, and the refuge is ready. Tell me whether the shrine still stands.

Umbralia crosses into the lodge with the copied maps secured beneath her wing. Sable, Maelin, Ordan, and Rusk gather around the hearth as Lunaris enters behind her.

Maelin

Maelin

Good. Put those maps on the table. We will learn what the Covenant knows before their next signal reaches this place.

Umbralia spreads the copied maps across the hearth table, weighing each corner with smooth stones. Charcoal lines overlap the refuge, the shrine, and every concealed approach.

Ash flakes drift from the folded bundle as the maps flatten. One route circles behind the eastern barrier, another descends toward the lodge’s rear wall, and a third marks the shrine as a signal post.

Maelin

Maelin

There. The rear route passes beneath the redwood roots. If they use it, they can reach the lodge unseen unless we close that gap.

Garran Vey

Garran Vey

The shrine is their eye, but these maps show a wider net. They planned to surround the refuge before committing their main force.

Maelin

Maelin

The ash marks are fresh. Their watchers were not merely studying the trails. They were assigning signals and timings.

Ordan

Ordan

Then we have their design before they complete it. Break the routes, silence the signals, and the Covenant loses its certainty.

Lunaris lowers his head over the table, silver eyes following the charcoal branches toward the eastern barrier. Around the hearth, every defender leans closer as the refuge’s next defenses take shape.

I know of a way to seal the root ways. Garran, I will need your strength to aid me.

Umbralia taps one charcoal branch on the map, then leads Garran to the rear wall. Beneath the redwood roots, a narrow passage exhales cold air toward the lodge.

Garran Vey

Garran Vey

Show me where the earth is weakest. I will move whatever stone and timber you require.

Umbralia slips into the root-shadow and marks three supporting stones with her talons. Garran follows, lifting a fallen redwood beam while she wedges flat rocks into the exposed gaps.

Garran Vey

Garran Vey

The beam will brace the upper roots. Pack the lower seam tightly, and no scout will crawl through without breaking the whole passage open.

Together they drag the beam across the hidden way. Garran’s strength locks it beneath the roots as Umbralia packs clay, stone, and tangled branches around every remaining opening.

Maelin

Maelin

The rear draft has stopped. Whatever you built, it has sealed the route. Now we can turn our attention to the shrine and the signals.

“the only other way for them to get here is to follow the main path through the woods, witch we couldn't block completely if we wanted to”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -3)

The main path through the woods is the only other route. We cannot block it completely without cutting off our own passage.

Umbralia traces the broad road on Sable’s map, then leads Garran outside to inspect it. The path runs between old redwoods, too wide and heavily rooted for a full barricade.

They drag two fallen trunks across the narrowest stretch and lash thorn branches between them. The barrier blocks wagons and forces foot traffic into single file, but leaves the road passable.

Garran Vey

Garran Vey

It will slow a force, not stop one. Anyone determined can climb over or cut through, and the work has made enough noise to announce us.

A snapped bough echoes through the woods as Garran tightens the final binding. Umbralia’s talon catches on a thorn, drawing a thin line of blood across her toe.

Maelin

Maelin

Then we make the road costly to use. Watchers at both ends, warning cords in the brush, and no one approaches that barrier alone.

Lunaris

Lunaris

Movement. Far south on the main path. More than three, and they are coming north.

Umbralia launches into the redwood canopy with Lunaris, climbing above the road’s thorn barrier. Silver and obsidian wings vanish among the needles as the approaching figures enter single file.

Lunaris

Lunaris

Wait until they cross the trunks. Then we make the road remember them.

The first Covenant scout, a young adult woman with a lean build, dark skin, tightly curled black hair, and a weathered brown cloak over fitted gray clothing steps beyond the warning cords. Umbralia and Lunaris fan their tails, releasing volleys of venom-laced feathers that hiss through the branches.

Feathers strike cloaks, sleeves, and the earth before the scouts, pinning one cloak to a trunk and forcing the others into the open. Their advance breaks instantly.

the Covenant scout

Archers above! Back to the southern bend, now!

The scouts stumble backward beneath a second volley. One drops a bundled signal cord, while another raises a shield too late and retreats with feathers embedded in its rim.

Maelin

Effective, yes. Keep them away from the barrier, and do not let their retreat become a lure.

There is one other thing that could help us this day.

Umbralia whistles, a piercing note that cuts through the redwoods. For one breath, the scouts’ retreat falters beneath the canopy.

A thunderous roar answers from the southern trees. A huge adult armored beast emerges, broad and low-bodied, its hide concealed beneath overlapping dark ironlike plates and its club-shaped tail dragging a furrow through the frost.

The beast charges into the road, each footfall shaking loose needles. Its plated shoulders turn aside branches, while its heavy tail sweeps across the thorn barrier and breaks the lashings apart.

the Covenant scout

the Covenant scout

What in the old wars is that? Fall back! Keep away from its tail!

The scouts scatter toward the southern bend, abandoning their signal cord and shield. The armored beast plants itself between them and the refuge, roaring as Sable’s defenders gain a clear, protected line.

Maelin

Maelin

That certainly helps our day. Umbralia, can it tell friend from enemy, or must we give it another signal?

Umbralia keeps her gaze on the armored beast and lowers her tail, giving no command beyond the assurance. The creature’s roar fades into a guarded rumble.

The armored beast turns its plated head toward Sable, Garran, and the others, then plants itself squarely between them and the retreating scouts. Its tail stays still.

Maelin

Then I will trust your reading of it. Garran, keep everyone behind the barrier. We defend without provoking our unexpected ally.

Garran Vey

Understood. If the scouts turn back, the beast will hold the road while we choose where to strike.

At the southern bend, the Covenant scouts hesitate instead of fleeing. One retrieves the fallen signal cord, while another watches the armored guardian and searches for a safer route.

Who's a good boy, Terry? Who's a good boy? You are.

She reaches beneath his broad plated jaw and scratches his chin. The beast accepts her touch, lowering its head until her talons find the softer seams between the armor plates.

Terry's tail slams against the frost with a heavy thud, scattering needles and shaking the broken barrier. His guarded rumble deepens into a pleased, thunderous purr.

That is one wall mount I am happy to have. Garran, reinforce the barrier while Terry keeps watch.

✓ Quest Accepted

Secure the southern barrier

“I help Garran reinforce the broken southern barrier.”

Umbralia joins Garran at the broken southern barrier, keeping her injured wing tucked close. Together they drag the fallen trunks back across the road.

Garran Vey

Set that end against the redwood root. I will lift the crosspiece while you bind the lower gap.

Umbralia braces one trunk with her talons and threads thorn branches through the split lashings. Garran raises the crosspiece, and she secures it firmly beneath the barrier.

Garran Vey

Garran Vey

Good. The weight is distributed now. Even a determined force will have to slow and expose itself here.

They pack stones beneath the trunks and bind the upper branches together. The southern road narrows to a guarded passage, while Terry stands watch beyond it.
