Sable sets oatcakes, dried berries, and warm broth beside the banked hearth. Morning light reaches through the lodge windows, while the repaired fence holds firm beyond the door.

Maelin
The yard is safer now, and your work has earned my trust. But trust is not the same as an agreement without an end.
Lunaris settles close beside Umbralia and the open doorway, silver scales reflecting the coals. His head remains turned toward the quiet clearing as he listens.

Maelin
If you stay, we share the labor, the stores, and the watch. You do not claim the lodge as yours, and I do not treat you as hired hands.

Lunaris
Clear boundaries protect a refuge. We can accept shared work, but Umbralia and I remain together and answerable to one another.

Maelin
Then let us call this a trial through the winter. When the thaw comes, we decide together whether this is truly home.

umbralia
The fence closes the eastern gaps, and the lodge has food for another morning.
“we could even help you expand this lodge, to accommodate me and lunaris, if you'll allow it.”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +1)

umbralia
We could help you expand the lodge to accommodate Lunaris and me, if you will allow it.
The offer settles into the warm lodge. Sable studies the rafters, the narrow sleeping space, and the two wyverns beside the hearth, weighing timber, labor, and trust.

Maelin
You would help build the addition yourselves?

Lunaris
Our strength can raise beams, clear stone, and guard the work. We would expand the refuge without abandoning its defenses.
Sable’s guarded expression eases. She steps outside and surveys the eastern side of the lodge, where the repaired fence leaves a sheltered stretch of firm ground.

Maelin
Then I allow it. We will build beyond the east wall, keeping the cistern and fence accessible. Your space can be part of this refuge, not a claim over it.

Maelin
After the trail inspection, we will mark the foundation and count what timber we need. If you stay through winter, you will have a proper place here.

Build an addition to the lodge
“i find the tree nearest to the lodge and point to it. "their that's the one, that's the one we will build in"”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

umbralia
There, that’s the one. That’s the one we will build in.
Umbralia points toward the redwood nearest the lodge, its broad trunk rising just beyond the eastern wall. Its roots spread through firm ground beside the fence, while sturdy limbs reach over the sheltered space.

Maelin
That tree is close enough for warmth and easy watch, but not so close that its roots threaten the foundation.
Sable walks to the redwood and presses one palm against its rough bark. She studies the roots, the overhanging branches, and the clear ground between trunk and lodge.

Lunaris
It offers height, cover, and a strong anchor for the roofline. We can build around it without harming its living roots.

Maelin
Then this is the place. We will keep the trunk within the new room and raise the walls around it, leaving the cistern path open.
The chosen redwood stands beside the lodge as a natural pillar for their future quarters. Sable marks the ground with her boot, fixing the building site in the refuge’s eastern yard.
“now that that's settled, how about we scout the eastern trail?”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -1)

umbralia
Now that that’s settled, how about we scout the eastern trail?
Sable nods and gathers her bow while Lunaris rises beside Umbralia. The newly marked building site remains behind them as they pass through the repaired eastern fence.

Maelin
A sensible beginning. We will learn whether that route protects the refuge or invites trouble.
The trail descends beneath the pines, following the hoofprints found after the boar hunt. Frost lies unbroken in the shadows, except where deer and heavier animals crossed.

Lunaris
The herd uses this path regularly. Their tracks lead toward a sheltered basin, and nothing larger has followed them recently.
Umbralia and Lunaris climb the surrounding trunks for a higher view while Sable studies the ground below. From the branches, the route is fully visible to its bend.

Maelin
It is safe enough for hunting and watch patrols. We have found our eastern approach, and I will add a gate where the fence meets it.
