Beyond the lodge, Sable leads Umbralia and Lunaris into a weed-choked yard. Fallen redwood limbs form a rough border, while a dry woodpile leans beside an old stone cistern.

Maelin

Maelin

This is the refuge’s true measure. The roof holds, but little else does. Three residents will exhaust its stores before winter loosens its grip.

Sable gestures toward the cistern, the tangled yard, and the narrow trail disappearing between the trees. Moss darkens the stones, and no fresh tracks mark the packed earth.

Maelin

Maelin

The defenses need repairing, the food stores need filling, and that approach needs watching. A hungry beast or an unfriendly traveler could reach the door too easily.

Lunaris circles the yard’s edge, silver scales muted beneath the forest shade. He lowers his head near the trail, studying disturbed needles and the gaps between fallen limbs.

Lunaris

Lunaris

The ground offers warning, but not enough. Something has passed here recently, light-footed and careful. I find no sign of a camp.

Maelin

Maelin

Then you understand the choice before us. I can share this shelter, but not carry two more mouths while they merely occupy it.

We will help where we can. We know where winter prey gathers in these woods, and can show you the paths.

Umbralia indicates the northern ravine and the frozen creek beyond it, describing sheltered runs where deer and heavy boar seek browse beneath the snow. The knowledge is useful, but revealing those routes gives away the pair’s best hunting grounds.

Maelin

Maelin

That would fill the larder, if the trails remain as you remember them. You are offering more than shelter demands.

Lunaris

Lunaris

The ravine holds tracks even under winter crust. We can hunt there without bringing danger back to the lodge.

Sable studies them, then crosses to the woodpile and selects a splitting axe. Her guarded posture eases, though her eyes linger on the northern trees.

Maelin

Maelin

Then prove the knowledge before dusk. Mark the safest approach, and I will mend the cistern fence while you are gone.

A gust scatters dry leaves across the yard. The proposed hunt now has a purpose, but the exposed northern routes will no longer belong solely to Umbralia and Lunaris.

“to the trees my dear and follow the trails to our next prey. i say as we leap upwards and latch to a tree”

To the trees, my dear. Follow the trails to our next prey.

Umbralia springs upward, her broad wings driving her through the redwood shade. Lunaris follows close, and together they latch onto a mossy trunk above the yard.

Their claws bite into the bark with a sharp crack, shedding a strip of moss. The sound carries across the clearing, a small cost to their swift departure.

Lunaris

Lunaris

The trail is fresh. Deer crossed the ravine, and something heavier followed them.

They climb from trunk to trunk, keeping below the redwood crowns. Broken fern stems and dark hoofprints guide them north toward the frozen creek.

Lunaris

Lunaris

There. A boar herd is feeding beneath the pines. The wind favors us, if we keep to the high branches.

Beyond the last redwoods, Umbralia sees the herd rooting through thin snow beside the creek. Their path is marked, their prey found, and the lodge lies safely behind them.

“i shift my colors and move to a branch directly above them”

SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled +3)

The Refuge’s True Measure

Umbralia lets her obsidian scales flow into the pine’s mottled bark, silver flecks dimming beneath green shadow. She climbs silently above the feeding herd.

Her larger wings make brief, controlled strokes between branches, while her talons find silent holds. She settles directly above the boars, hidden among drooping needles.

Lunaris

Lunaris

You are above them. The wind carries your scent away, and the largest boar stands apart from the herd.

From the higher branch, Umbralia sees a narrow game trail descending toward the frozen creek, concealed beneath brush and leading safely around the herd’s rear.

Lunaris

Lunaris

That trail gives us a clean retreat toward the ravine. We can choose our quarry without crossing open snow.

Below, the boars continue rooting through the thin snow, unaware of the wyverns overhead. Frost clings to the branches, and the herd’s breath clouds the still air.

“i pounce on the largest boar pining it with one sickle claw to its throat but not yet killing it”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +2)

The Refuge’s True Measure

Umbralia drops from the pine in a silent rush, wings folding close as she descends toward the largest boar at the herd’s edge.

She strikes cleanly, driving the boar onto its side in the snow. One sickle claw braces at its throat, pinning it firmly without breaking the skin.

The herd erupts around them, hooves churning frost and brush. The pinned boar thrashes once, then stills beneath Umbralia’s controlled weight.

Lunaris

Lunaris

Held, and unharmed. I will turn the herd away before panic carries them toward the creek.

Lunaris sweeps low across the snow, his broad wings beating hard enough to scatter powder through the pines. The remaining boars veer toward the eastern slope.

Umbralia keeps her claw steady while the captured boar’s breath clouds the cold air. The retreating herd leaves the game trail clear behind them, and the ravine remains open for their return.

“thank you for these gifts, rest now. i say is i flex my toe and my sickle claw pierces the skin and kills the boar”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +0)

The Refuge’s True Measure

umbralia

Thank you for these gifts. Rest now.

Umbralia flexes one hind toe. Her sickle claw pierces the boar’s hide with a swift, precise motion, and its breath stops beneath her steady weight.

The snow settles around the fallen animal. Beyond the pines, the herd’s fading hoofbeats dissolve into the winter hush.

Lunaris

Lunaris

A clean kill. The herd is far enough away, and the retreat remains open.

Lunaris lands beside the game trail, scattering a veil of frost. He folds his wings and keeps watch while Umbralia rises from the boar.

Lunaris

Lunaris

We should carry what we can before dusk. Sable will know the value of this hunt.

The slain boar lies ready in the snow, its broad shape enough to replenish the lodge’s stores. The northern path remains clear toward the ravine and home.

“i drag the corpse back to the lodge”

Umbralia hooks her sickle claws into the boar’s thick hide and grips its bristled shoulder, securing the corpse before dragging it onto the game trail.

Snow grinds beneath the heavy body as she hauls it through the pines. Lunaris moves ahead, clearing fallen branches and guiding their retreat toward the ravine.

Lunaris

Lunaris

The trail is clean. Your strength will bring it home before dusk.

They descend through the ravine without crossing open snow. The dragged carcass leaves a clear scent trail, but the wind carries it away from the lodge and toward the empty eastern slope.

At the ravine mouth, Umbralia finds fresh hoofprints branching east, revealing a second route the herd uses beneath the pines. It offers safer hunting ground for future journeys.

Maelin

Maelin

I heard you coming. That is more meat than I expected, and the trail you chose leaves no easy approach to our door.

Umbralia drags the boar into the weed-choked yard beside the old woodpile. Sable sets down her axe and approaches, visibly impressed as Lunaris takes position at the clearing’s edge.

SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled +1)

umbralia

I told you we knew where to find them, though we expected elk and not boar at this hour.

The explanation settles over the yard with the steam of the boar’s cooling breath. Umbralia stands beside the carcass, snow still clinging to her dark feathers.

Maelin

Maelin

I believe you. The herd’s presence explains the tracks, but not why they shifted so close to the creek.

Sable circles the boar without touching it, measuring its size and the clean trail behind it. Her guarded expression gives way to practical approval.

Maelin

Maelin

Whatever brought them here, this is enough meat to make your knowledge useful. I will clear a place by the hearth and start the cutting.

Lunaris

Lunaris

The eastern route holds fresh hoofprints. We can follow it another day, when the snow gives better signs.

Sable lifts her axe and gestures toward the lodge. The hunt has filled the immediate need, while the newly discovered trail promises safer returns through the pines.

Umbralia lowers her head toward the boar, extending one careful sickle claw. Snow slips from her feathers as she waits beside the carcass.

Maelin

Maelin

Very well. Use the claw, not the fangs. I would rather keep the meat clean, and I will show you where the joints are.

Sable sets her axe aside and kneels near the boar’s shoulder. She points out the seams beneath the hide, while the hearth smoke drifts warmly from the lodge.

Lunaris

Lunaris

I will keep watch while you work. The eastern trail remains quiet, and no scent approaches from the trees.

With Sable guiding, Umbralia begins separating the hide along the marked seam. Her claw moves with surprising precision, opening the carcass cleanly for the lodge’s stores.

Maelin

Maelin

You have a steady hand. At this rate, the cutting will be finished before the light leaves the yard.

Umbralia draws her sickle claw through the marked seam. The hide parts cleanly beneath her precise cut, peeling away from the boar’s shoulder and flank without wasting meat.

Maelin

Maelin

Good. Keep the edge shallow there, then follow the ribs. The joints will yield if you let the claw find them.

Umbralia works steadily, freeing the broad skin in one continuous sheet. Frost melts from her feathers and darkens the packed earth beneath the carcass.

Lunaris

Lunaris

The clearing remains quiet. No scent has crossed the eastern trail, and the wind still favors us.

With the hide set aside, Umbralia separates the boar into substantial sections, placing each portion near the lodge door for storage and cooking.

Maelin

Maelin

That is clean work, and more than enough to carry us through several meals. I will salt what we cannot use tonight.

Sable carries the salted portions inside while Umbralia and Lunaris follow through the open doorway. The hearth’s warmth gathers around their feathers, chasing away the yard’s frost.

Sable clears space beside the fire and sets a broad iron pot over the flames. She adds water, roots, dried herbs, and generous pieces of boar.

Maelin

Maelin

Set the rest on that table. We will have a proper meal before the light fades.

Umbralia places the remaining portions where Sable indicates. Lunaris settles near the door, his silver scales reflecting the fire while he watches the darkening clearing.

The pot begins to simmer, filling the lodge with the savory scent of boar and herbs. Sable stirs slowly, then ladles the first steaming portions into wooden bowls.

Umbralia eats heartily, emptying bowl after bowl until the boar, roots, and herbs leave her thoroughly fed. Her claws scrape the wooden bowl hard enough to chip its rim.

The generous meal costs her speed for the moment. A heavy fullness settles beneath her ribs, making the lodge’s close warmth feel almost stifling.

Thank you for your hospitality, Sable.

Maelin

You earned the meal. That carcass will keep this lodge supplied, and your thanks are welcome.

Sable gathers the emptied bowls and pours water into a clay cup for each wyvern. Firelight glows across the table, where salted meat now hangs ready for later meals.

Then rest tonight. Tomorrow, we can mend the fence and learn whether your eastern trail truly stays safe.

“me and lunaris curl into each other by the fire and fall asleep”

The Refuge’s True Measure
Lunaris
Lunaris

Umbralia and Lunaris settle beside the hearth, their wings folding close as they curl into one another. Firelight glints across silver and obsidian scales.

The lodge grows quiet around them. Sable banks the fire, hangs the bowls to dry, and leaves the salted meat undisturbed on the table.

Maelin

Maelin

Sleep well. Tomorrow will find enough work waiting for all three of us.

Lunaris’s breathing deepens against Umbralia’s side, steady and warm. Her own heavy fullness eases as the hearth’s gentle heat softens the cold held in her feathers.

Outside, wind moves through the redwoods and brushes the repaired silence of the clearing. No footsteps approach, and no warning breaks the lodge’s calm.

The fire settles into glowing coals. Umbralia and Lunaris fall asleep together beside it, sheltered beneath Sable’s roof as night gathers beyond the walls.

“in the morning i help sable repair the lodge fence”

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +0)

Morning light filters through the redwoods as Sable carries a bundle of split rails into the yard. Umbralia follows from the lodge, her appetite and strength restored.

Maelin

Maelin

The eastern stretch needs the most work. Set those rails along the fallen posts, and I will brace them from this side.

Umbralia grips the rails in her talons and carries them across the weed-choked ground. She places each piece beside the old fence, keeping the sharpened ends clear of the packed earth.

Sable loosens the collapsed section with her axe while Umbralia lifts the heavier posts into position. Together, they rebuild the boundary around the cistern and woodpile.

Maelin

Maelin

Hold it there. Good. Your strength saves me half a day, and the fence will stand better for it.

Umbralia presses the final post deep into the soil, then steadies it while Sable binds the rails with woven cord. The repaired fence closes every gap along the lodge’s eastern approach.

Maelin

Maelin

There. The yard is defensible again. After breakfast, we can inspect the eastern trail without worrying that anything will walk straight to our door.
