The Brute's Discipline

The damp, subterranean chill of the cell bites into Timothy’s skin as he remains pinned, the air thick with the scent of stagnant filth. The Large Prisoner runs a callous, dirt-caked thumb over his knuckles, savoring the shudder that runs through the boy’s frame.

Large Prisoner

Large Prisoner

He has spirit, but his back will break soon enough. I want to see how much more pressure it takes to make him beg for mercy.

Large Prisoner

Large Prisoner

Stop trembling, whelp. It makes for a messy target.

Timothy

Timothy

If I don't give them a reason to keep me useful, this next one will be the end. I need to pivot, or at least brace for the impact.

Large Prisoner

Large Prisoner

You cleaned the floor well, but you still possess too much pride. Let us see if a bit more discipline fixes that.

The brute raises his arm, the muscles in his shoulder coiling like rope, while the Wiry Prisoner leans forward, his eyes gleaming with malicious anticipation.

{{

I use my willpower to accept the punishment and humiliation, but allowing myself to cry out in pain so that the two men will be satisfied that they have broken my spirit and made me completely subservient to them. I prepare myself for a future where I must obey their every whim.

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

The Large Prisoner’s fist descends, a heavy, calloused weight that connects with Timothy’s midsection. The breath leaves Timothy’s lungs in a sharp, jagged gasp. He consciously loosens his core, letting the force fold him forward onto the cold, damp stone. He suppresses the urge to recoil or lash out, instead venting a high, broken cry that echoes off the low ceiling. He collapses into the grey sludge, his frame trembling as he makes himself small, offering his neck to the dampness of the floor.

Wiry Prisoner

He has no fight left. Finally, the boy understands his place.

Large Prisoner

Large Prisoner

That is the sound of a broken dog. Keep that tone, whelp, or the next lesson will be far less merciful.

Timothy

Timothy

It hurts, but they are satisfied. I am still breathing. I am still here.

I use my oratory to persuade the large prisoner to accept me as his servant and plaything.

Master... please. I am small, quick, and know the ways of the forge. Let me serve you. My hands are good for the finer tasks you cannot reach, and I will be your shield-bearer... your shadow. I only seek to survive.

Large Prisoner

Large Prisoner

A shadow? A rat seeks to be a shadow, yet it still smells of the sewer. You think your silver tongue can trade breath for servitude?

Large Prisoner

Large Prisoner

I have no need for a broken toy that tastes of fear.

The Large Prisoner scoffs, his heavy boot catching Timothy in the shoulder before he can fully rise. The impact sends Timothy skidding across the grit-covered floor, his back colliding hard against the damp, jagged masonry of the wall. The Wiry Prisoner cackles, a dry, rasping sound that fills the small, suffocating space.

Timothy

Timothy

My words were not enough. He does not want a servant, he wants a victim. How do I move without snapping a bone?

Find a way to escape the iron cell

I use my oratory to appeal to the wiry prisoner, believing that his malignant glee at my humiliation hides a desire for my body.

You see the sport in this, don't you? My pain is a fine vintage for your eyes. But look at me, truly look. I am a scrap of nothing, broken and bruised. If you allow this to continue until I am finished, you lose the only amusement in this rotting hole. Help me, and I promise to be far more entertaining than a corpse on the floor.

A shivering little bird thinks he can bargain?

The Large one is right. You are nothing but a stain, and you are starting to smell like one.

Wiry Prisoner

Wiry Prisoner

Nobody likes a desperate bird, boy. Especially when it sings off-key.

The Wiry Prisoner spits, a glob of thick phlegm landing squarely on Timothy’s cheek. His laughter turns into a sharp, jagged screech of genuine disgust. He reaches out, grabbing Timothy by the hair and slamming his head back against the stone wall with a sickening thud.

Timothy

Timothy

That was a mistake. My head is ringing, and the world is tilting too far to the left.

I use my perception and reasoning to try to find a way to escape the cell.

The jolt of the wall impact sends a tremor through my vision, but the vibration carries a secret. The stone behind my ear feels hollow, and there, in the mortar dust drifting into the dim light, I see the loose block. The brute's rough handling shifted the masonry just enough to reveal a jagged fissure in the foundation.

Timothy

Timothy

You are right to laugh, you miserable wretch. A bird in a cage is a song, but a bird in a nest is a secret.

Timothy remains slumped, his head lolling as if dazed, but his eyes dart feverishly to the base of the wall. He lets his shoulder lean heavily against the loose rock, feeling the subtle give of the earth beneath the cell. His fingers, buried in the filth on the floor, scrape rhythmically against the stone, working to widen the gap while the Wiry Prisoner remains distracted by his own cruelty.

Timothy

Timothy

If I can move just one more stone, the drainpipe behind this wall is my only path out. Can I reach it before they decide my head is better off detached from my shoulders?

I tell the two men that the weakness in the construction of the cell means that they can use their greater strength to escape, and that I will stay in the cell to distract the guards so that they can make good their escape.

Listen well. You strike me, yet you ignore the true wall between you and freedom. That stone beneath the mortar is loose, and the mortar itself is ancient, crumbling like dried bread. If your strength is as great as your arrogance, one kick from you could breach this foundation into the drainpipe. Why rot here, beating a boy, when you could be gone before the guard returns?

The Large Prisoner freezes, his boot hovering inches from Timothy's ribs. He looks at the wall, then at the Wiry Prisoner, who has stopped his pacing to study the fissure.

Large Prisoner

Large Prisoner

If the boy speaks true, we are fools for wasting our breath on him.

The Large Prisoner turns toward the loose stone, a predatory hunger replacing his malice. He rolls up his sleeves, his massive knuckles turning white as he prepares to test the masonry.

Breach the cell wall

I use my perception to find the point in the cell wall that is weakest, so that the large prisoner can break a way through.

Aim for that hairline fracture near the base, just behind the mortar's soft spot. It is the keystone. If you kick there, the whole section will yield to the pressure of the earth outside.

Timothy

Timothy

If he shatters it, the wall comes down. If he fails, he will surely crush me for the wasted effort. My life hinges on his brute force now.

The Large Prisoner sneers, his gaze tracing the precise weakness Timothy highlighted. He steps back, shifts his weight onto his rear leg, and launches his heavy boot directly into the crumbling masonry. Dust plumes upward as the stone groans under the impact.

Wiry Prisoner

Wiry Prisoner

Look at it tremble! Keep at it, you oaf!

The wall segment shifts, a jagged crack racing up the foundation like a lightning strike. The Large Prisoner draws back his leg again, muscles coiled, ready to deliver a final, wall-shattering blow.

I use my oratory to encourage the large prisoner to demolish the wall so that he and the wiry prisoner can escape.

Strike true, master of the stone! If you shatter the foundation, we walk free into the night air while the guards still hunt the empty halls. Your strength is a tempest, let it break these iron shackles for us all!

He is puffed up with pride. He will strike until his heart gives out if I keep feeding the flame of his vanity.

The Large Prisoner bellows, a roar of pure adrenaline that echoes against the damp stone. He throws his entire weight into the strike, his heel connecting with a sickening crunch of mortar and shifting rock. The wall does not just crack; it buckles outward. A massive section of the foundation gives way, tumbling into the earth beyond with a thunderous clatter. Daylight streams through the jagged aperture, blinding and sweet.

Freedom! You did it, you hulking beast!

The Large Prisoner stands amidst the swirling dust, chest heaving, his gaze locked on the narrow opening to the world outside.
