The bellows wheeze like a dying beast. Angus looms, his massive hand a shackle against Timothy’s shoulder. The heat of the iron forge radiates in shimmering waves, curling the air around them.

Angus
He finally breaks. I see the spirit draining from his eyes like slag from a crucible. A few more minutes of this labor, and he will be as pliable as soft lead.

Timothy
My lungs burn and my grip on the bellows handle is slick with sweat. If I collapse, he wins. If I keep pumping, I am just a cog in his furnace.
Angus sneers, leaning closer as a spark erupts from the coals, casting long, dancing shadows against the soot-stained stone walls. He nudges the leather strap on the floor with his boot, a silent reminder of the punishment waiting for any lapse in effort.
“I use my strength to keep pumping the bellows despite their great weight, the oppressive heat, and my exhaustion. I know that if I fail, Angus will use the strap on my buttocks again.”
FAILURE (Mediocre Health, rolled +3)
The bellows handle feels like it is made of lead. Timothy heaves, his heels digging into the grime, but his muscles betray him. With a wet, rhythmic gasp, his grip slips. The handle jerks upward, his palms sliding uselessly against the sweating wood.

Timothy
No, no, not now!
The sudden release of tension causes Timothy to stumble backward, his small frame unbalancing. He collapses into a heap of coal dust, the bellows wheezing once more as they go limp. Above him, Angus shifts his weight, the leather strap in his hand tightening as he prepares to make good on his promise.

Angus
Pathetic. Even the fire knows when it has outlived its usefulness.
The silence in the forge is sudden and heavy, broken only by the crackle of cooling coals and the sound of the blacksmith’s boots closing the distance. Angus raises the strap, his shadow swallowing the floor where Timothy lies shivering.
“I touch my toes ready to receive my punishment with the strap.”
FAILURE (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

Timothy
I cannot outrun him. If I offer myself now, perhaps he will tire of the game sooner.
Timothy curls forward, spine bowed like a brittle twig, shielding his head with trembling arms. He braces for the sting, his breath hitching in his chest. But the expected lash never falls. Instead, he hears a strange, sharp gasp from above, followed by a heavy, metallic thud that rattles the very tools on the workbench.

Timothy
What was that?
Timothy risks a glance upward. Angus is no longer standing. The blacksmith has pitched forward, his face obscured by the shadow of the anvil, his body slumping heavily against the forge's base. The leather strap lies forgotten near his limp, outstretched fingers. The forge fire flares, illuminating the stillness of the man who moments ago held absolute power over Timothy's fate.

Timothy
He... he just collapsed. Master Angus?
The master does not stir. The only movement in the room is the slow, dying flicker of the coals. Timothy remains huddled, listening for the sound of a ruse, but the silence holds.
“Angus seems to have suffered a collapse from over-exertion, but will recover later.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +3)

Timothy
The air feels different. He is truly unconscious. If I act now, I can leave this place before he wakes and decides to finish his work.
Timothy crawls toward the edge of the forge, his eyes tracing the stillness of the blacksmith. He sees the heavy, calloused hand of the man, fingers splayed near the cooling embers, finally devoid of the iron grip that has ruled his life. The heavy, rhythmic thrum of the bellows has ceased, leaving the room submerged in an unnatural, heavy silence.

Timothy
He is not breathing well. He might be broken, or he might just be spent. Does he deserve my help, or do I take the chance to slip out the side door?
Timothy looks at the heavy oak door, then back at the slumped, aging form of the man who promised him a lifetime of pain. He reaches out a trembling hand toward the leather strap, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Escape the forge
“I creep to the door of the forge in order to get help for Angus.”
FAILURE (Great Stealth, rolled -2)
Timothy rises, his foot catching on a discarded iron rod. It clatters loudly against the stone, the sound echoing like a thunderclap in the silent forge. Timothy freezes, his breath hitching as he glances back at the blacksmith. Angus stirs, a low groan escaping his throat as his eyes flicker open, squinting through the gloom.

Timothy
No. He is waking. I have failed to leave quietly.
The blacksmith moves with sluggish, pained effort, his hand blindly sweeping the floor near the leather strap. He is not fully conscious, but his instinct for control remains sharp. The oak door stands only a few paces away, but the path is now blocked by the shifting weight of the massive man.

Angus
Timothy:0
... do not... leave... your post.

Timothy
He is barely coherent, but he is still the master of this room. I am trapped once again.
“I use my willpower to wait patiently until a visitor to the forge arrives to assist Angus.”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +2)

Timothy stands his ground. He keeps his breathing shallow and his hands clasped behind his back, forcing his heart rate to slow. Outside, the rhythmic strike of hooves against the village cobbles draws closer, followed by the heavy, familiar thud of a delivery cart stopping just beyond the threshold.

Merchant
Ho there, Angus! I’ve brought the coal you requested.

Angus
Timothy:0
... help me... the boy...
The merchant pushes the oak door open, the golden afternoon light spilling into the dark workshop. He spots Angus slumped against the iron forge and Timothy standing still as a statue nearby. The merchant’s brow furrows as he takes in the scene.

Timothy
The merchant is here. I have not run. I have not fought. I have only waited. Will he see the strap and understand, or will he demand I return to my toil?

Merchant
What ails you, blacksmith? And why does the lad look as though he’s seen a specter?
+ Scene Quest Added
Escape the forge while the merchant is distracted
“I use my willpower to resist the urge to contradict the blacksmith, as he tells the merchant that I had attacked him and caused his fall, and that I must be punished. I meekly allow the merchant to believe the blacksmith's version of events. The blacksmith points out a set of chains and suggests that the merchant use them to restrain me.”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

Angus
The boy... he struck me with an iron rod... he is wicked, merchant! Use those shackles on the bench before he attacks again!

Timothy
Keep your head low, Timothy. Your hands are shaking. If you pull away, you prove him right. If you stay, you remain in his reach.
Timothy remains utterly motionless. He stares at the dirt floor, his posture brittle and submissive. The merchant glances from the sputtering forge to the shivering youth, then turns his gaze toward the heavy iron chains sitting atop the workbench. The merchant slowly begins to step toward the rack, his expression hardening with suspicion.

Merchant
I have no desire to interfere in a master's business, but if he is as dangerous as you claim, blacksmith, then the iron is a kindness.
The merchant reaches out, his fingers hovering near the cold, rusted links. Timothy feels the weight of the moment, the air thick with the smell of coal dust and impending captivity.
“I use my willpower to hold myself still and submit to the merchant binding me with the chains. It is easier to submit because of being outnumbered and feeling guilt at the incident, as well as already having been humiliated by the thrashing Angus gave me.”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

Timothy
If the merchant chains me, I am trapped, but I am safe from his lash. If I fight now, I am surely beaten to death. Let the iron go on. Let him think I am broken.
Timothy remains utterly still, his wrists held forward in a trembling display of submission. He does not meet the merchant’s eyes, his gaze locked firmly on the grime beneath his boots.

Merchant
A heavy price for a wayward apprentice, but it keeps the peace.
The merchant pulls the heavy, rusted chain from the bench. With a metallic rattle that echoes against the stone walls, he swings the cold loop toward Timothy’s outstretched wrists. The merchant’s eyes are narrow, measuring the weight of his task, while Angus wheezes a jagged breath of satisfaction from his seat by the forge. The iron is inches from Timothy’s skin.

“As I stand with my wrists firmly bound by the chains, I use my diplomacy and oratory to persuade the merchant and blacksmith that I should be punished by the court in the local town, instead of being punished here immediately.”
SUCCESS (Good Oratory, rolled +3)

Timothy
Stop. If you bind me here, you deny the town magistrate his due. This man is a master smith, but he is no judge. If I have transgressed, let the law hear it in the square, before the witnesses of the village. Why hide a judgment in a dying fire where only shadows can testify?

Merchant
The boy speaks with a sharp tongue for a laborer.

Timothy
It is not sharp, sir, it is honest. If I go to the stocks in the market, the whole village sees my penance. If I am shackled here, who knows what happens to me when the master wakes in a fury? Surely a man of your trade prefers the legality of the common court over the private vengeance of a fevered blacksmith.
The merchant hesitates, the iron chain dangling limp in his grip. The weight of the logic lands harder than any hammer.

Merchant
A public reckoning does draw less... suspicion.
“I use my oratory and diplomacy to persuade the merchant to chain my wrists anyway, to make sure that I don't attempt to escape before I can be taken before the town magistrate.”
FAILURE (Good Oratory, rolled +1)

Timothy
Please, if you truly believe I am a criminal, take me to the magistrate yourself. Bind my hands now, and ensure I do not slip away into the dark before we reach the square. I would rather face the law in chains than be left here to the whims of a man who has lost his mind.

Merchant
This boy is a serpent. He begs for chains only to play the martyr and twist my arm into a trip I never planned.

Merchant
You try to play the master, boy. You tell me where to go and how to handle my cargo? I have no interest in your legal theater, and I have no patience for your insolence.
The merchant sneers, dropping the shackles onto the soot-covered floor with a heavy, mocking clang. He turns his back to Timothy, discarding the boy's plea as if it were nothing but hot cinders.

Merchant
If you are so desperate for a cage, crawl into the coal sack yourself. I am finished with this house of fools.

“I use my reasoning to try to work out what punishment Angus would most enjoy giving me to restore his pride and his sense of authority.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +4)

Timothy
If he wants to save face, he won't just hit me. He wants to prove he is the master of this room. He would want me on my knees, back bared, begging for his mercy in front of an audience. It is the humiliation that fuels his pride more than the sting of the leather itself. If I refuse to provide the spectacle, his control over this moment evaporates.

Timothy
I will not crawl into the filth of a coal sack, merchant. You talk of insolence, yet you ignore the man at your feet who is currently cursing you for your hesitation. If you truly wish to be rid of this place, leave us both to our fates. I would rather face the cold outside than serve a man who finds his only joy in the torment of a boy.
Timothy stands his ground, his small frame trembling, but his eyes locked firmly on the merchant. The silence in the forge grows heavy, broken only by the raspy, shallow breathing of the blacksmith on the floor.
“I use my willpower to meekly bend over and allow the blacksmith to thrash my bare buttocks with the strap while the merchant watches, until Angus is satisfied that I have learned my lesson.”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)
Timothy sighs, the weight of his resolve collapsing under the crushing pressure of the room. He moves with a slow, mechanical precision, shuffling toward the center of the room. His hands tremble as he unties his tunic, his face a mask of hollow submission. He turns away from the watching merchant, his spine hunching as he bends low, presenting himself to the blacksmith.

Timothy
I yield, Master Angus. I am yours to correct.
Angus, his breathing ragged and his movements jerky from the haze of his recovery, fumbles for the discarded leather strap. He drags himself upright against the forge, his face twisted in a sneer of grim victory. As he raises the strap, his knuckles white and trembling, the merchant watches, arms folded, his initial hesitation replaced by a cold, detached indifference. The first blow whistles through the stale air, a sharp crack that signals the end of Timothy’s defiance.

Endure the punishment and depart the forge
“I use my strength to try to keep still and endure the punishment without crying and begging for mercy.”
FAILURE (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)
The strap bites deep, a searing line of fire across Timothy’s back. The shock is absolute. His resolve, honed by hours of defiance, shatters under the physical agony. He lets out a jagged, undignified gasp, his knees buckling as he reflexively arches away from the sting. Tears prick his eyes, blurring the dusty floorboards, and a pathetic, whimpering sob escapes his throat before he can check it.

Timothy
This is not how it was supposed to go. I am failing. I am losing everything.
Angus sneers, his chest heaving with exertion. He does not stop. He draws his arm back again, the leather tail hissing in the air. The merchant shifts his weight, the floor creaking under his boots, as he observes the scene with a stone-cold expression, his hand resting idly on his belt.
“I use my oratory to persuade the merchant that he should end the punishment by taking me in chains to be judged by the magistrate at the town court instead.”
SUCCESS (Good Oratory, rolled +2)

Timothy
Stop! Please, Merchant, you are a man of coin and standing. Does it sit well with your reputation to facilitate a murder? If I am a criminal, I demand the King's justice! Take me to the magistrate in chains. Let the law decide my fate, for blood spilt in anger brings only curses and trouble to honest trade!
The merchant freezes, the iron strap hovering inches from Timothy’s reddened skin. He looks from the boy’s desperate, pleading eyes to the flickering, dying fire of the forge, then down at the discarded shackles on the floor. He scoffs, but his grip on the leather strap slackens.

Merchant
A trial? A mess of paperwork and gold-hungry bailiffs... perhaps he is right. There is no profit in a corpse, and the magistrate does pay a bounty for delivery of runaways.
The merchant lowers his arm. He shifts his gaze toward Angus, whose heavy, labored breathing fills the silence.
“I use my oratory to tell the merchant that he could take me as his slave if the magistrate permits it after the court punishes me, and that I will agree to do anything else he wants if he takes me in chains to the court to be punished.”
SUCCESS (Good Oratory, rolled +1)

Timothy
Merchant, consider the coin. If you drag me before the magistrate as a runaway, you claim the bounty. If the court finds me guilty, petition for my indentured service. I am young, I am willing, and I can work twice as hard as any grown man who is already half-dead. Take me in chains to the judge, and I shall be your servant for years to come. Spare me this savage beating, and secure your own profit.
The merchant stares at Timothy, his eyes narrowing as he calculates the value of a lifetime of labor versus a fleeting moment of petty violence. He tosses the leather strap aside, the heavy hide slapping against the soot-stained floor.

Merchant
A steady hand in my warehouse, working off a magistrate-sanctioned debt... that is a better prospect than leaving a broken boy for the rats.
The merchant reaches for the heavy iron shackles again, but this time, he holds them out toward Timothy like a bargain struck in blood and ink.
