The streambed narrows beneath the broken cleft. Silt peels away in the current, exposing a sealed bronze reliquary wedged among the stones while Mara steadies Edrin at the water’s edge.

Its lid bears the same crooked warning mark that once moved beneath Edrin’s skin. As Kelnozz approaches, the bronze vibrates, and a dead man’s voice leaks through the seal.

The Dead Thief's Memory

The Dead Thief's Memory

We carried the silver chest below the shrine before the water took us. It was never treasure. It was a prison, and we opened its road.

The Trapped Voice

The Trapped Voice

No. The chest was already beneath the shrine when I reached the refuge. The thieves divided their loads here, then fled toward the watercourse.

The Dead Thief's Memory

The Dead Thief's Memory

The pale survivor came after us. He saw the chest before the division, not after. We lied about the order because the prison was listening.

The reliquary’s seal remains closed, but black script loosens from its bronze rim and rides the current toward the deeper store. The stream carries the warning mark past Kelnozz’s boots.

Mara Vell

The memory contradicts him, but not cleanly. Kelnozz, the mark is moving toward the hidden store, and whatever waits there may know we are coming.

Kelnozz shrugs off the warning and advances through the cold stream, sword ready in his hand. The current drags at his boots, but he keeps moving toward the hidden store.

A submerged stone rolls beneath his foot. Kelnozz slips, strikes his knee against the bank, and catches himself with one palm before the current can turn him around.

Mara Vell

Mara Vell

Your knee took the stone, but you are still standing. Keep your guard high, and I will bring Edrin behind you.

Kelnozz pushes onward, favoring the bruised knee without slowing. The black script slips past him, vanishing around the bend as the stream widens into a dark chamber.

The Trapped Voice

The Trapped Voice

The hidden store is ahead. The thieves kept the stolen loads beyond that shelf, where the water runs beneath the eastern stone.

Kelnozz reaches the hidden store with his weapon ready. Bronze-bound crates and torn sacks rest on raised stone shelves, while the moving warning mark disappears into the chamber’s deepest pool.

“Will head towards the chamber but watch his steps to make sure he's got footing”

FAILURE (Fair Perception, rolled -2)

The Prison Beneath the Streambed

Kelnozz advances into the hidden store, lowering his gaze to each wet stone and testing the silt with his boot before shifting his weight. Bronze-bound crates loom through the dimness.

The footing appears firm beneath the dark water, but the current has hollowed the silt around a submerged shelf. Kelnozz steps onto it, and the stone tilts sharply under him.

He catches himself against a raised stone ledge as the shelf drops away. A bronze-bound crate slides from its platform, blocking the direct approach to the deepest pool.

Mara Vell

Mara Vell

The floor is undermined here. Do not trust the dark water to show what supports you.

Mara brings Edrin to the store’s edge and keeps him clear of the shifting shelf. The fallen crate settles across the channel, leaving only a narrow dry strip beside the shelves.

The Trapped Voice

The Trapped Voice

That crate was not there before. The pool lies beyond it, beneath the eastern shelf.

Kelnozz’s careful approach has exposed the unstable shelf and sealed the straight route with the displaced crate. The narrow strip beside the raised shelves offers the only visible way deeper.

“Takes the narrow strip”

Kelnozz turns sideways and takes the narrow strip beside the raised shelves, placing each boot on the exposed stone while the fallen crate blocks the channel behind him.

The ledge holds beneath his weight. His bruised knee protests as he lowers himself under a jutting shelf, and rough bronze scrapes a shallow line across his forearm.

Mara Vell

Mara Vell

The strip is sound so far. Keep close to the shelves, and do not put weight on the water’s edge.

Kelnozz advances past the displaced crate, securing the narrow passage and reaching the eastern side of the hidden store. Bronze-bound loads crowd the shelves overhead.

The Trapped Voice

The Trapped Voice

You are beside the eastern shelf now. The deepest pool begins beyond those stacked crates, beneath the stone lip.

Mara guides Edrin onto the secured strip behind him. The current churns below, but the group has crossed the unstable section and stands beside the eastern shelf.

Kelnozz reaches the eastern shelf and settles onto its broadest stones, keeping his boots clear of the dark water below. Bronze-bound loads tower above him, beaded with cold moisture.

The shelf extends beneath the stone lip toward the deepest pool. From here, the displaced crate blocks the channel behind him, while the stacked loads reveal several sealed chests and torn sacks.

The Trapped Voice

The Trapped Voice

This is the eastern side. The thieves stored their heavier loads here, above the pool where the current could not reach them.

Mara brings Edrin fully onto the shelf and checks the stones before releasing her support. He remains upright, sheltered from the strongest current beside the raised bronze crates.

Mara Vell

Mara Vell

We are across safely. The shelf gives us room to examine the loads without stepping into the pool.

Ahead, the eastern shelf curves around the deepest water. The hidden store lies open before Kelnozz, its raised cargo and dark pool waiting for closer investigation.

“search the room”

FAILURE (Fair Perception, rolled -1)

The Prison Beneath the Streambed

Kelnozz searches the eastern shelf methodically, examining bronze clasps, torn sacks, dust patterns, and the narrow spaces beneath each raised load. The cold moisture blurs several older marks.

When he tests a stacked chest near the pool, its lower support shifts. The chest settles hard against the shelf, scattering damp sacks and blocking the clearest view of the remaining cargo.

The disturbance does not reveal the hidden store's contents, but it exposes a slim gap behind the displaced loads. Faint dry air moves through it, carrying the smell of old parchment.

Mara Vell

Mara Vell

The stack is no longer safe to pull apart. Search the gap from this side, before the shelf gives us less room.

From the gap, Kelnozz can see a recessed stone niche beyond the crates. A bronze keyhole glints within it, while the fallen sacks conceal whatever lies below.

The Trapped Voice

The Trapped Voice

That niche was hidden from the water. The thieves kept their smaller records or keys there, away from the heavier loads.

The broad search has failed, leaving the cargo unstable, but the exposed niche offers a precise next approach without entering the deepest pool.

Kelnozz reaches beneath the displaced loads and grips a damp sack by its intact upper seam. The fabric is coarse but serviceable, and he lifts it clear without disturbing the unstable stack.

He shakes the silt from the bag and opens its mouth wide. The loose folds reveal enough room to hold the ledger, tablets, route sketch, and small key securely.

Mara Vell

Mara Vell

That will do. Keep the key where you can reach it, and leave the niche undisturbed until the records are secure.

Mara watches from the shelf while Kelnozz settles the recovered items into the sack. The damp cloth wraps around the key, and the bronze-bound ledger rests flat beneath the tablets.

Kelnozz gathers the sack’s mouth and ties it with a firm loop, leaving the contents protected from the stream’s spray. The exposed niche and its bronze keyhole remain plainly visible beyond the crates.

The Trapped Voice

The Trapped Voice

The smaller stores were kept behind that niche. With your evidence protected, we can examine the lock without losing anything to the water.

The bag now holds the recovered records and key, freeing Kelnozz’s hands for the next investigation. Mara steadies Edrin nearby as the hidden niche waits beyond the unstable cargo.

“use the key I have on the keyhole”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Agility, rolled -1)

The Prison Beneath the Streambed

Kelnozz takes the small key from the tied sack and reaches into the narrow gap. His bruised knee strikes the shelf as he twists, sending a sharp pain through his leg.

He steadies himself against the crates, fits the key into the bronze keyhole, and turns it with deliberate pressure. The lock gives with a deep internal click.

A concealed panel opens within the niche, revealing a shallow compartment lined with dry stone. Inside rest sealed wax packets, a black iron crescent ring, and a narrow ivory tablet etched with dates.

Mara Vell

Mara Vell

The lock opened cleanly. Your knee did not; take a breath before you reach farther.

Mara keeps one hand near Edrin while watching the opened compartment. The black iron ring catches the dim light, its crescent sign matching the mark tied to Serik Vale.

The Trapped Voice

The Trapped Voice

That ring was shown to us before the chest was moved. The packets may name who carried the loads and where they went.

The niche stands open, and its contents are within reach. Kelnozz has secured the key and found new evidence, though his knee remains bruised beneath the strain.
