The eastern passage descends beneath the shrine into an undercroft of black stone. Mara Vell and Guard One accompany Kelnozz, while Hugh, the baron's representative, Guard Two, and Keeper Odran remain above with the witnesses and bundle.
Old silver ward-lines pulse beneath the stones, their dim radiance broken by a spreading seam of black water. The seep carries iron, wet dust, and the unmistakable scent of Hugh's missing chest.

The Speaking Lantern Hook
The ward remembers the chest. Its seal weakens from within, and something beyond it remembers a human voice.
Guard One raises the wax-marked hook toward the passage. Beyond the failing seal, darkness answers with a faint human plea, muffled by running water and old stone.

The Speaking Lantern Hook
I recognize the ward, not the speaker. The voice may belong to the former owner, or to something wearing his memory.

The Trapped Voice
Please... the silver chest... do not let it open.

Mara Vell
That plea came from beyond the seal. Kelnozz, the water is rising around the ward-stones.
The silver lines flare once, then dim. Water threads beneath the sealed arch, carrying the plea farther into the darkness while Guard One waits for Kelnozz's response.

Keep the trapped survivor alive
“Break the seal on the door to open it”
SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +3)

Kelnozz plants both silver-scaled hands against the failing seal. The ward-lines shudder under his strength, black water splashing across the threshold as the ancient binding cracks open.
The sealed door gives way with a deep stone groan. Silver light spills through the opened arch, revealing a flooded passage descending toward a half-submerged chest bound in tarnished metal.

Mara Vell
It is open. The water is moving toward us, but the ward no longer holds it back.

Guard One
There! The chest is beyond the first stones. I saw no passage farther than this when I carried the substitute.
The lantern hook warms in Guard One's grip. From beyond the chest, the muffled human plea becomes clearer, trembling beneath the rush of underground water.

The Speaking Lantern Hook
The door is open. The voice is human, and the chest seal is still closed. Do not mistake one for the other.
“Look for anyone”
FAILURE (Fair Perception, rolled -1)

Kelnozz scans the flooded passage beyond the opened arch, searching the silver-lit gaps between pillars, the waterline, and the darkness around the half-submerged chest.

Kelnozz the Shiney
The water breaks every clear outline.
Ripples turn the passage into fractured reflections. Kelnozz catches a pale shape beyond the chest, then loses it as the current surges across the stones; no face, limbs, or certain body emerges.

Mara Vell
Do you see someone, or only the water moving?
The rising flow spreads across the threshold and curls around the chest, drowning the faint shape beneath a shifting veil. The search finds no identifiable person, but reveals that the flooded passage will soon erase the remaining sightline.

The Speaking Lantern Hook
The current hides the speaker. The chest remains between you and the voice.
“Move to the voice and will swim if need be”
FAILURE (Fair Athletics, rolled -1)

Kelnozz steps into the flooded passage, bracing against the current as he wades toward the trapped voice. The water rises swiftly around his thighs, then his waist.
He pushes off and swims, but the current catches his broad frame before he reaches the chest. It drives him sideways into a stone pillar, forcing him to seize an iron ring.

Mara Vell
Kelnozz! The water is too strong. The chest is shifting against the lower stones!
The half-submerged chest grinds loose and swings across the passage, wedging beneath the arch. Its tarnished bands catch the current and turn the direct route into a narrowing, dangerous channel.

The Speaking Lantern Hook
The chest has chosen the passage's narrow throat. Swim toward it now, and the water will carry you beneath the stones.
Kelnozz remains gripping the pillar, soaked and held short of the voice. Beyond the wedged chest, the trapped plea sounds clearer, but the blocked channel offers no safe approach.

The Trapped Voice
Please... not through the water. There is another way beneath the eastern wall.
“Will secure the chest to stay wedged in the archway, and rush over to the eastern wall to get to the back end.”
SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +3)

Kelnozz releases the pillar only long enough to seize the chest’s exposed iron band. He drives it against the archway, then hooks the band around the pillar’s ring and twists until the chest holds fast.
The current hammers the secured chest, but the wedged bands endure. Kelnozz turns into the water and powers along the eastern wall, following the trapped voice’s promised route beneath the stones.

The Speaking Lantern Hook
The chest is held. The eastern wall carries a dry ledge beyond the current.
Kelnozz reaches the eastern wall and finds a narrow shelf just above the waterline. He hauls himself onto it, leaving the chest wedged securely behind him in the archway.

Mara Vell
You found the other way. The water is still rising, but the ledge leads behind the chest.
From the ledge, Kelnozz sees the passage’s rear end beyond the wedged chest: a low eastern opening where silver ward-light reveals dry stone and a shadowed turn.

The Trapped Voice
Yes. Come through the eastern wall. The chest must remain closed, or the water will take us all.
“Will rush towards the voice to help them out”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Agility, rolled +2)

Kelnozz surges along the eastern ledge, one hand skimming the wall as the rising water snaps below. The stone shelf narrows sharply near the shadowed turn.

The Speaking Lantern Hook
Keep your shoulder to the wall. The dry stone continues beyond the turn.
His foot slips on the wet ledge. Kelnozz catches himself against a jagged seam, scraping his forearm, but drives onward before the current can pull him down.
He rounds the turn and reaches a cramped hollow behind the chest. A pale, soaked man is pinned beneath a fallen stone brace, breathing hard but conscious.

The Trapped Voice
You came. My name is Edrin Vale. The brace holds my leg, and the water is rising beneath it.
Kelnozz reaches the trapped man and grips the brace, establishing a solid hold. Behind them, the secured chest groans against the arch while silver ward-light flickers over the flooding hollow.

“Throws her over my shoulder and carries her out”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +0)

Kelnozz wrenches the fallen brace upward. Stone grinds against his shoulder, but the pressure lifts from Edrin Vale's pinned leg, freeing him from the hollow.
With the water rising beneath them, Kelnozz hauls Edrin across his shoulder and locks one arm around the man's legs. The effort bruises his shoulder beneath the scales.

The Trapped Voice
Careful. My leg is numb, but I can hold on. Do not let me pull you into the current.
Kelnozz carries him along the narrow eastern shelf, keeping his back to the wall while water lashes below. The secured chest groans behind them, but remains wedged beneath the arch.

The Speaking Lantern Hook
The dry ledge reaches the opened arch. Carry the living man beyond the waterline.
Kelnozz reaches the safer stone beyond the arch and lowers Edrin onto dry ground. Mara Vell rushes forward, taking the freed man's shoulders as Kelnozz steadies himself against the wall.

Mara Vell
He is out. Kelnozz, your shoulder is swelling, but you got him clear.
